From the moment the eggs are laid, they face predators, A wily rac- coon watching u turtle lay its eggs may then dig and eat the eggs from the nest. Ghost crabs and fire ants can invade nests. Birds may snatch hatchlings headed to sea. And then there is man. Lighting along the beach can dis- orient hatchlings and send them away from the sea to die from dehydration or other disasters. Beach furniture left out all night can present obstacles for both the nesting and hatching turtles. And pollution, loss of nesting habitat through development and erosion, boat collisions and o drowning in shrimp nets and other fishing gear have caused a drastic decline in sea turtle populations. The SCCF participates in monitoring the sea turtle nest- ing and hatching numbers from May through October as part of a Florida Department of Environmental Protection program to track the threatened and endangered species. Volunteer walkers monitor zones on Sanibel's east end and report nestings and hatchings to SCCF permittees listed with the DEP. Individual permittees monitor Sanibel's west end in the white and blue SCCF Jeep and also monitor Captiva in the red "mule" beach vehicle.
