C THE CAMPAIGN FOR REAL ALE The CAMRA Regional Inventory for London Pub Interiors of Special Historic Interest Using the Regional Inventory The information The Regional Inventory listings are found on pages 13–47, where the entries are arranged alphabetically by postal districts and, within these, by pub names. The exceptions are outer London districts which are listed towards the end. Key Listed status Statutory listing: whether a pub building is statutorily listed or not is spelled out, together with the grade at which it is listed LPA Local planning authority: giving the name of the London borough responsible for local planning and listed building matters ✩ National Inventory: pubs which are also on CAMRA’s National Inventory of Pub interiors of Outstanding Historic Interest Public transport London is well served by public transport and few of the pubs listed are far from a bus stop, Underground or rail station. The choice is often considerable and users will have no di≤culty in easily reaching almost every pub with the aid of a street map and a transport guide. A few cautionary words The sole concern of this Regional Inventory is with the internal historic fabric of pubs – not with qualities like their atmosphere, friendliness or availability of real ale that are featured in other CAMRA pub guides. Many Regional Inventory pubs are rich in these qualities too, of course, and most of them, but by no means all, serve real ale. But inclusion in this booklet is for a pub’s physical attributes only, and is not to be construed as a recommendation in any other sense. -

Urban Geology in London No. 20 London’s Pub Geology: A Spotter’s Guide By Ruth Siddall The Three Crowns, Stoke Newington High Street, N16 The last quarter of the 19th Century and the first few years of the Twentieth were the golden age of London Pub architecture with the building of fantastic and fantastical temples to anti-temperance. City pubs of this period, unlike those of earlier times, were not part of coaching inns, taverns (which also served food) or hotels. They functioned purely as drinking establishments (with maybe a few distractions in the form of games, such as billiards). The intention of pubs was to appear as eye-catching, attractive and welcoming establishments with the sole aim of luring paying customers in, and keeping them in as long as possible. They would have been (and often still are) well lit at night, with rows of lamps along their frontages and would have stood out like beacons on the dark, night-time streets of Victorian and Edwardian London. The exterior decoration of pubs was often lavish as was the interiors, although few London pubs retain examples of their original interiors (see Brandwood & Jephcoate, 2004 for survivors). However lavish does not necessarily equate with luxurious and expensive. Although not necessarily done ‘on the cheap’, interiors were often furnished with wooden panels, mass-produced (but often beautiful) pressed and cut glass and mirrors, and brass light fittings. Compare this with the ‘marble halls’ of hotels and fine dining restaurants aimed at the wealthy, such as Charles Fitzroy Doll’s Russell Hotel (1898) and the Criterion Restaurant, by Frank Verity (1899) the latter in swanky Vermont Marble all the way from the USA. -

The Urban Inn: Gathering Space, Hierarchy and Material Culture in the Eighteenth-Century British Town Daniel Maudlin, Urban History, 2019 Inns were at the centre of everyday life in the eighteenth-century British town; if not the most important they were certainly the most useful – and used - institutions in town. Most urban institutions whether the courthouse, church, exchange, assembly room or market place, while central to civic life, had very specific functions and so were only used in specific ways on specific occasions. As buildings they spent much of their time empty. By contrast, inns were full of people most days because they provided a neutral, flexible gathering space that was available seven days a week. Inns provided warm, dry and welcoming communal rooms with no defined purpose (besides the sale and consumption alcohol) other than as spaces within which people could meet and spend time together for pleasure or business. -

STRS 1 , 2 and 3 are the three issues of the Scientific and Technical Review supplement. Figures or tables are denoted by ‘Fig’ or ‘Tab’ following the relevant page number; there may also be textual reference at that point. The filing order is word-by- word. All issues are available electronically from the English Heritage website (http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.11241); however, issues 1–40 have been scanned from the hard-copy originals and page numbers may not correspond to those in the index. Indexing is not exhaustive, i.e. passing mentions are not normally indexed. Subject entries have been made only for topics that form the main subject of an article or of a substantial section. Aspects of English Heritage policy are to be sought under specific entries, e.g. ‘buildings at risk’. The Corporate Plan supplements in issues 9, 12 and 15 have not been indexed in detail.
