In this study we use a Nd isotope combination of bulk sediment geochemistry, Nd and Sr isotope geochemistry, and single grain zircon U-Pb Erosion dating to understand the source of sediment in the modern drainage. We also performed zircon U-Pb dating on Provenance Eocene sedimentary rocks sampled by International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 349 in order to Pearl River constrain the source of sediment to the rift before the Oligocene. -

Email: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract This article deals with the use of social capital in organizing the Frog Festival in a Zhuang ethnic village in China amidst the expansion of cultural tourism. The data used were drawn from qualitative research in Baying Village, Donglan District, Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China. Key informant interviews as well as participant and non-participant observations were the main data collection techniques employed in the field research. The study found that there are three forms of social capital-namely, networks, norms, and trust-employed in the organization of the Frog Festival, which has become a part of China’s cultural tourism development. Social capital in the form of networks includes bonding networks among relatives, bridging networks between Baying residents and Zhuang outside the village, and linking networks between Baying villagers and the state as well as agencies from outside. Of the three forms of network, bonding is the most important because it connects not only those who have genealogical relationships, but also Zhuang dwellers from nearby villages to actively take part in organizing the festival. The research also indicates key roles of the other two categories of social capital-norms and trust-used in the organization of the Frog Festival which have allowed for its success in Baying and generated strong social networks. -

Additionally, Hubei Province is well-known for its diverse landforms, including mountains, hills, mounds and plains. This area is called “The Province of Thousand Lakes” due to the abundance of water resources. Geographical names are exclusive names given to physical or anthropogenic geographic entities at specific spatial locations and are important signs by which humans understand natural and human activities. In this study, geographic information systems (GIS) technology is adopted to establish a geodatabase of geographical names with particular characteristics in Hubei Province and extract certain geomorphologic and environmental factors. -

The goal to achieve ‘carbon neutrality’ is quite possibly the single most important issue facing architects and engineers today, given the empirical evidence that construction projects far outstrip both industry and transportation as the largest contributors to carbon emissions in the world. This paper will attempt to both define what is meant by ‘carbon neutral’ in the context of building design as well as using the case study to demonstrate how such an approach might be achieved it examines the challenges of achieving a net zero energy building, both from an energy consumption perspective as well as the embodied energy of the construction. -

On the other hand, water is used inefficiently and wastefully: water use efficiency in the agriculture sector is only 40% and within industry, only 40% of the industrial wastewater is recycled. However, based on statistical data, China’s total water resources is ranked sixth in the world, based on its water resources and yet, Yellow River and Hai River dries up in its estuary every year. In some regions, the water situation is exacerbated by the fact that rivers’ water is heavily polluted with a large amount of untreated wastewater, discharged into the rivers and deteriorating the water quality. Several regions’ groundwater is overexploited due to human activities demand, which is not met by local. Some provinces have over withdrawn groundwater, which has caused ground subsidence and increased soil salinity. So what is the situation in China? Is there a water crisis, and if so, what are the causes? This report is a review of several global water scarcity assessment methods and summarizes the findings of the results of China’s water resources to get a better understanding about the water situation. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Water quality attribution and simulation of non-point source pollution load fux in the Hulan River basin Yan Liu1,2, Hongyan Li1,2*, Geng Cui3 & Yuqing Cao1,2 Surface water is the main source of irrigation and drinking water for rural communities by the Hulan River basin, an important grain-producing region in northeastern China. Understanding the spatial and temporal distribution of water quality and its driving forces is critical for sustainable development and the protection of water resources in the basin. Following sample collection and testing, the spatial distribution and driving forces of water quality were investigated using cluster analysis, hydrochemical feature partitioning, and Gibbs diagrams. The results demonstrated that the surface waters of the Hulan River Basin tend to be medium–weakly alkaline with a low degree of mineralization and water-rock interaction. Changes in topography and land use, confuence, application of pesticides and fertilizers, and the development of tourism were found to be important driving forces afecting the water quality of the basin. Non-point source pollution load fuxes of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) were simulated using the Soil Water and Assessment Tool. The simulation demonstrated that the non-point source pollution loading is low upstream and increases downstream. The distributions of N and P loading varied throughout the basin. The fndings of this study provide information regarding the spatial distribution of water quality in the region and present a scientifc basis for future pollution control. Rivers are an important component of the global water cycle, connecting the two major ecosystems of land and sea and providing a critical link in the biogeochemical cycle. -

What role did climate play in enabling powerful states and civilizations to appear in some areas while other locations remained better suited for a nomadic lifestyle? Let's begin to answer these questions with a story about floods in China. China's two great rivers — the Yangtze and the Yellow — have flooded regularly for as long as we can measure in the historical and geological record. The Yangtze river rose an astonishing 53 feet above its normal level in just one day. It unleashed some of the most destructive floodwaters ever seen. The floods were caused by a "perfect storm" of conditions. Monsoon rains, heavy snowmelt, and unexpected rains pounded huge areas of southern China. All this water poured into the Yangtze. The river rose and burst its banks for hundreds of miles. -
