For instance, the red-crowned cranes in the IUCN (World Conservation Union) red list, the Chinese merganser and the Siberian tiger all find their habit in this plain. Sod layer soils are thick, generally 30 to 40 cm. In the area lies the most fertile black earth in China, and it’s one of the three black earth terrains in the world. On the other hand, water is used inefficiently and wastefully: water use efficiency in the agriculture sector is only 40% and within industry, only 40% of the industrial wastewater is recycled. However, based on statistical data, China’s total water resources is ranked sixth in the world, based on its water resources and yet, Yellow River and Hai River dries up in its estuary every year. In some regions, the water situation is exacerbated by the fact that rivers’ water is heavily polluted with a large amount of untreated wastewater, discharged into the rivers and deteriorating the water quality. Several regions’ groundwater is overexploited due to human activities demand, which is not met by local. Some provinces have over withdrawn groundwater, which has caused ground subsidence and increased soil salinity. So what is the situation in China? Is there a water crisis, and if so, what are the causes? This report is a review of several global water scarcity assessment methods and summarizes the findings of the results of China’s water resources to get a better understanding about the water situation. -

Here’s a bit of insight into the mind of a budding map-head. While my grade-school geography teacher attempted to stuff our heads with tables on the average rainfall in the Amazon and graphs on the relevance of the Donbas [1] for the Soviet economy, I kept staring at the page showing East Asia, wondering: Does Russia share a border with North Korea, or does China touch the sea? The map stubbornly refused to yield enough detail for an answer. The line that defined China’s borders with North Korea and Russia was inked too thickly to determine whether there was a Chinese-Russian-North Korean tripoint on land (but very close to shore), or a Chinese (but very narrow) beachfront on the Sea of Japan [2]. Both options seemed bizarre, yet either would have obvious geopolitical implications: in the former case, Russia would have unimpeded traffic with North Korea; in the latter, China would have direct access to a strategic body of water. Did the mapmakers deliberately gloss over the issue, not wanting to be bothered with such trivia [3]? It’s more likely that they too didn’t quite know where to draw the line: the last border disputes in the area, a region with some of the world’s tightest, most heavily policed borders, were settled less than a decade ago. Even then, the border is too intricate to display adequately on a small- scale map [4]; you can see it with a zoomable online map, but you have to get in pretty close to see what the dickens is going on. -

The PAH levels were generally low over the year; however, the PAH concentrations increased according to one of two seasonal trends, which were either an increase in PAHs during the cold period, influenced by heating, or a PAH enrichment during the wet period due to higher run-off inputs. The major PAH source was the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, but a minor input of petrogenic PAHs in some seasons was observed. Higher PAH concentrations were observed in fresh and brackish water compared to the saline waters in the Tumen River estuary, while the PAH concentrations in both types of water were similar in the Partizanskaya River estuary, suggesting different pathways of PAH input into the estuaries. -

Memories from Abroad: Han 漢 Chinese and Nomadic Heritage in Korean and Japanese Archaeological Contexts Barbara SEYOCK Introduction The centuries between 100 BCE to 300 CE brought about major changes in material culture, social structures, and cross-cultural trade relations for the Korean peninsula and the Japanese archipelago. One major catalyst for these developments was the establishment of four Chinese commanderies in the north of the Korean peninsula in the year 108 BCE, as we can learn from Chinese documentary history. Three of them were vacated soon after their establishment due to constant local resistance; another one, Daifang 帶方, was installed early in the third century, but left no verifiable archaeo- logical traces. The Lelang 樂浪 commandery, however, has left a treasure house of remains for archaeologists to reveal.1 It remained in existence until the early fourth century CE and transmitted Han 漢 material culture and lifestyle to the peninsula and beyond. Iron objects, and also bronze items, both showing a close relationship to the neighbouring Liaoning 遼寧 culture, had been present in the northwest of the Korean peninsula from the fourth to third centuries BCE onwards, as can be seen for example at the Yongyŏndong 龍淵洞 site near the river Yalu (Yalu jiang 鴨綠江, kor. Amrokgang 압록강) in North-P’yŏngan Province.2 However, the impulse for the rapid spread of the techniques required for bronze and iron manufacture throughout the whole of the peninsula and further south crossing the Korea Strait to the Japanese archipelago is closely connected to the manifestation of Han-Chinese culture on the peninsula itself. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Archaeolinguistics, a field which combines language reconstruction and archaeology as a source of infor- mation on human prehistory, has much to offer to deepen our understanding of the Neolithic and Bronze Age in Northeast Asia. So far, integrated comparative analyses of words and tools for textile production are completely lacking for the Northeast Asian Neolithic and Bronze Age. To remedy this situation, here we integrate linguistic and archaeological evidence of textile production, with the aim of shedding light on ancient population movements in Northeast China, the Russian Far East, Korea and Japan. We show that the transition to more sophisticated textile technology in these regions can be associated not only with the adoption of millet agriculture but also with the spread of the languages of the so-called ‘Transeurasian’ family. In this way, our research provides indirect support for the Language/Farming Dispersal Hypothesis, which posits that language expansion from the Neolithic onwards was often associated with agricultural colonization. -

Project Description Project Site Sewage Treatment Plant in Jilin City 1.1 Background Since the 1978 adoption of the Economic Reform Policy, the Chinese economy has been making steady growth, and the country’s development in economic aspects has been phenomenal. In parallel, however, the advancement of industrialization has brought about an impending challenge: solving environmental problems including deteriorating quality of river water caused by increased household and industrial wastewater, and air pollution caused by increased use of coal. At the time of appraisal of the project in question (1998), the basin of Songhua River (total length: ca. 2,308 km) that runs through Jilin and Heilongjiang Provinces and Liao River (total length: ca. 1,390 km) that runs from Hebei Province/Inner Mongolia, through Jilin Province to Liaoning Province is home to a large number of state-owned petrochemical and other companies and has achieved solid economic growth. The economic prosperity, however, brought with it aggravation of water environment deterioration, because the increases in household sewage and industrial wastewater generation far exceeded the available capacity of sewage and wastewater treatment facilities. Against this background, the Province of Jilin was faced with the urgent need to implement control-at-source measures and improve the sewer system. 1.2 Project Outline The objective of this project is to improve water quality by implementing environmental 4-1 pollution control projects in Songhua/Liao River Basin, a region faced with serious problems of water and air pollution as a result of rapid economic growth, thereby contributing to improved standard of living and health of the local residents. -
