LILLEHAMMER OLYMPIC PARK Olympic City: Lillehammer Country: Norway Edition of the Games: 1994 Winter Olympic Games Preliminary remarks As you may have seen, two governance cases are dedicated to Lillehammer. Reasons that support this choice are twofold. First, Lillehammer hosted two editions of the Games. If the latter built upon the former to deliver great Games, it also produced its own legacy and consequently, structures to deal with it. Second, as legacy is about both venues and facilities at one side and education, knowledge transfer and experience sharing at the other side, two different cases were necessary to encompass various ways Lillehammer manages its Olympic legacy(ies). Inherited from the 1994 Games, the Lillehammer Olympic Park is a structure run by the municipality of Lillehammer that takes care of the majority of Olympic venues and events. The Lillehammer Olympic Legacy Sports Centre is an emanation of the Norwegian Sports Federation and Olympic and Paralympic Committee and is a direct legacy of the YOG. Obviously, many bridges and crossovers exist between these structures and collaboration and common understanding are key. The big picture also encloses the Norwegian Top Sports Centre of the Innland region dedicated to elite athletes (Olympiatoppen Innlandet), the University, the Olympic Legacy Studies Centre as well as the remaining Olympic venues run by other municipalities or private companies. With all these partners involved in managing Lillehammer’s Olympic legacy, clusters (venues, events, training, research, etc.) facilitate organisation and legacy management. While this kind ofnews story would often be ignored as just another example ofthe Chinese government destroying cultural history in the name ofprogress, the story of Qianmen had a new twist. Not only was Qianmen a protected heritage area under a 2002 Beijing Municipal Government Conservation Plan, but the destruction was said to have happened because ofthe upcoming 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Was the development ofQianmen in step with Olympic ideals and sustainable development? This thesis explores the sustainable development agenda ofthe International Olympic Committee, Agenda 21, in order to analyze the agenda, its impact in driving development policies in host cities Sydney, Australia and Beijing, China, and to what v extent planners incorporated historic preservation into Olympic development policies in both cities. -

THESIS PROJECT SYDNEY OLYMPIC PARK OLYMPIC LEGACY OR BURDEN BY BEN JAMES 2007 AN UNDERGRADUATE THESIS SUBMITTED AS A PARTIAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE BACHELOR OF PLANNING DEGREE, UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES 2007 ABSTRACT ‘The best Olympic Games ever’ are the words that Olympic organising committees around the world want to hear after they have hosted the Olympic Games. This title can only be held by one host city, and the current holder is Sydney. However, like many host cities in the past, infrastructure built for the Games has not had much of a post-games life. Due to this lack of post-games use, the main Olympic site at Homebush is perceived as a burden on Sydney rather than the unambiguous positive legacy envisaged. Sydney Olympic Park has even been described as a ‘white elephant’. This thesis will look at how the site as a whole has functioned since the Games, with particular reference to underutilisation of the two main stadiums. The potential of the 2002 master plan to inject new uses and vitality into the site is considered. The thesis provides a series of best practice guidelines that could be used by future hosts of similar mega-events to ensure that Games-related infrastructure does not become a burden on the host city. OLYMPIC LEGACY a success story BUILT ON OLYMPIC LEGACY While the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games may have occurred over a decade ago and be a fond memory, the legacy of these great events is flourishing as Sydney Olympic Park continues to develop and deliver benefits to the community. This is the greatest Olympic success story of all time, as no other Olympic venue has thrived as much as Sydney Olympic Park. Just 14 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district and 9km east of Parramatta, the location of Sydney Olympic Park is considered the population heart of greater Sydney. Sydney Olympic Park is a large and unique area covering 640 hectares, twice the size of the Sydney central business district. Of this land area, 430 hectares are green space and parklands with areas inhabited by threatened species, protected marine vegetation and endangered ecological communities. Today, Sydney Olympic Park is home to residents, a workforce, students and visitors, who come to enjoy sporting facilities, entertainment, exhibitions and events as well as open green space, playgrounds and cycleways. A state government agency, Sydney Olympic Park Authority was formed in July 2001 to manage Sydney Olympic Park, ensuring the best use of this significant place for the people of Sydney and New South Wales. The Park’s vibrant centre, iconic buildings, major event facilities, grand public spaces and precious natural environment are all balanced, coexisting together. Today, the Park attracts more than double the amount of visitors who came for the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games — now over 10 million people come each year to enjoy all the Park has to offer. -

While the summer season has ended, we are busy finishing several construction projects and transitioning to winter operations. Through this board packet and meeting, we will report on operational and financial highlights, discuss progress on several ambitious construction projects, and review efforts of our committees in areas of: short & long term net operating loss (NOL) reductions, partnership & fundraising progress, strategic plan suggested refinements, and steps being done to create a “Sport2030” set of goals & action plans. CURRENT UOLF CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES In the large scheme of things, our Foundation is continuing to address the biggest challenge, that is to have a dynamic and impactful “Living Legacy Impact” while balancing both short term & long term financial stability. This study presents a new approach based on spatial analysis, GIS, and data coming from Location-Based Social Networks to model the spatiotemporal dimension of impacts associated with the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Geolocalized data from Twitter are used to analyze the activity pattern of users from two different viewpoints. The first monitors the activity of Twitter users during the event—The arrival of visitors, where they came from, and the use which residents and tourists made of different areas of the city. The second assesses the spatiotemporal use of the city by Twitter users before the event, compared to the use during and after the event. The results not only reveal which spaces were the most used while the Games were being held but also changes in the urban dynamics after the Games. -

WASHINGTON 2024 OLYMPIC BID MASTERPLAN WASHINGTON DC The Washington 2024 Bid distinguished itself from past and present bids as the most compact and walkable games in recent Olympic history. With the 75% of competition venues located within the District, as well as the Athletes’ Village and International Broadcast Center, the bid would foster the City’s long-range development plans, and create opportunities for reinvestment in areas still untouched by the widespread economic success enjoyed throughout much of the city. COMPACT GAMES In contrast to the region’s 2012 bid, which included venues in Virginia, Baltimore, and Annapolis, the 2024 Plan is intended to showcase the District, and its growth and continued development since the last bid was put forth in 2001. The District is relatively small compared to Rio, London, and Los Angeles, but its concentration of existing venues, and its unique grid of L’Enfant streets allow for a much more compact and urban games than have been recently planned. Our Foundation, Park, Oval, and Soldier Hollow venue teams have been going strong all winter (and even harder than usual because of the lack of natural snow!). -

Igor Kováč Národné športové centrum 6. júna 2012 Urbanism and geography of the Olympic Winter Games Introduction This contribution focuses on urban and spatial aspects in organisation of the Olympic Winter Games. It explains the role of urbanism within this process, implying the reasons which allow its distinguishing as an “Olympic” phenomenon. In this regard, an Olympic geography will be defined and its role will be further explained, resulting into identification of Olympic territory as a common platform of the both. Consequently, the concept of Olympic urbanism model will be introduced as a result of application of geographical approaches in studying the Olympic urbanism, in order to provide a historical overview and final synthesis of the factors determining spatial organisation of the Olympic Winter Games in host territories. Olympic urbanism Without any intention to exclude its environmental specifics, the Winter Games as a sort of mega-event can be clearly understood “...as an important urban phenomenon of our time...an one-time urban event with increasing prevalence as an urban strategy...” (Hiller, 2000: 185). Of course, the mountainous specifications of the Winter Games cannot be neglected as they essentially modify this strategy. In any way, however, it is the urbanism, a set of scientific and artistic methods and procedures used in the formation of human settlement, which represent those strategies. The main concern of urbanism, as one of its definitions says, is the formation and composition of urban organism and wider territorial units, following the quality of the human living environment, affected by natural, material, cultural and social aspects, highlighting the concrete population needs as its direct starting point.
