OUR OPINION It’s time to consider consolidation

he elephant in the room became apparent about 5 minutes from the end of a two-hour T economic summit at Florida Gateway College on Monday. Hotelier Nick Patel, noting the challenges to growth that lie ahead, questioned whether we need the continued expense of both a city and county fire department as well as other duplicate agencies. Even before Patel spoke, it was obvious that in order to accomplish the goals laid out at the meet- ing (and at previous meetings like it over the last 20 years), there was one good answer staring us all in the face: Consolidation. Combine city and county government into one and reap the benefits of reduced duplication of effort in the form of greater efficiency and a stream- lined approach to growth without constant bureau- cratic turf wars. The theme of the evening on Monday was utilities. Without water and sewer, attracting new business to outlying parts of the county is difficult. Problem is, the City of Lake City holds all the cards and doesn’t always play them wisely — if at Calvary Baptist and Mr. Zan all. By TONY BRITT [email protected] raduating from Florida Gateway GCollege on May 4 turned out to be Star Wars- style adventure for more than 300 students Friday, complete with quotes from Yoda and challenges about the trilogies in people’s life. Florida Gateway College held a pair of spring com- mencement exercises Friday with 196 graduates walking across the stage in the morning commence- ment ceremony and 115 in the afternoon service. The Howard Conference Center was filled for both ceremonies. “Florida Gateway College was an amazing college and I was blessed to be able to go here,” said Tayannah Engle following the ceremony. “It was just a great place to learn.” Engle, who was home- schooled, was part of the school’s dual-enrollment program and was thankful her mother was able to attend her graduation. “I’m super proud of Tayannah,” Monya Engle, Tayannah’s mother said. “She overcame bullying several years ago and to see her graduate is just awesome.” Debra Parker graduated with her cousin and said the two shared a special bond by attending college and graduating together. “It was fun attending col- lege with them,” she said. “You had somebody else to help you keep your grades up and it was cool having a family member out here with me.” Buie Summerlin was with a group of friends taking photos immediately following the ceremony. “I’m so excited to start the next journey in my life,” she said, noting she received her Associates of Arts Degree. “I plan to go to the University of Florida pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing.” Her friend Emily Harrington said she enjoyed the commence- ment exercise. “I thought it was so original with the Star Wars theme and I’m just ready to go onto the next part of my life,” she said. “This means a lot. FGC is like a commu- nity and a big family and I know so many people out here that it just felt really nice to walk on the stage in front of everybody.” During the graduation ceremony, students received bachelors and well as associates diplomas. Some students were still in high school, while other students were grandparents. Lawrence Barrett, FGC president, was happy the Class of Spring 2018 had such a diverse makeup. “As usual, this is the best time of the year next to Christmas for me,” he said as he walked and talked to graduates in Pine Square after the ceremony. “It’s exciting to see those won- derful faces and the diverse group of students we had.” Barrett said 41 17-year-old students graduated and the PHOTOS BY TONY BRITT/Lake City Reporter oldest graduate was 64. “For some, it’s the first time anyone in their family has graduated college,” Barrett said. “It’s just won- TOP: FGC associate diploma candidates are all smiles derful to see all these stu- as they enter Howard Conference Center Friday after- dents’ faces, opportunities noon.
