It will be held September 15-17 at the Hilton Hotel, in Downtown Chicago. The 2021 NAIPC theme is titled “Sustainability – Winning the Race to Propulsion 3.0.” New this year, we have adjusted the name of the conference from powertrain to propulsion to reflect the ongoing evolution in the industry toward electrification. The year’s program will reflect the trending developments in alternative and electrified propulsion systems, including engine, hybrid transmission, battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell technology. We are currently entering the third phase of a three phase Propulsion systems evolution. The first phase, Propulsion 1.0, is characterized by the rise and dominance of the Internal Combustion Engine. It has provided superior customer convenience, functionality, and value, compared to other alternatives. 2 The second phase, Propulsion 2.0, has very much been characterized by a strong regulatory influence on the continued evolution of propulsion system technologies, including the emergence of electrification to meet ever increasingly stringent global fuel economy and criteria emissions standards. Finally, we believe the third phase, Propulsion 3.0, will be defined by the delivery of propulsion system technologies and supporting business models that serve as enablers to meet consumers’ and society’s expectations for a more sustainable carbon neutral environment. This Conference will examine Propulsion Strategies through three lenses: Consumer, Business, and the Energy / Technology Sustainable Pathways. On Thursday morning, in the Consumer session, both market demands and regulatory regimes and the solutions to meet them will be highlighted. In the Business session that follows, latest strategies that deliver sustainable solutions profitably will be discussed. To complete the first day, several sustainable energy / technology pathways to satisfy consumers, while exploring the challenges and opportunities for business, will be explored. Friday morning will feature a session on the Challenges of Complex Systems Development covering hardware, software, and testing aspects. The conference will conclude with panels that bring all prior sessions together including the Supplier Panel, which is new a feature to the program, as well as the traditional OEM Panel. I look forward to seeing you in Chicago to discuss key challenges and opportunities in our business and strategies to succeed.
