ABSTRACT What can be done with 500 tonnes of organic waste penerated annually at The Forks Market? Waste management is an integral part of any development. Organic waste is a product at The Forks that is currently discarded. This material can and should be rewd on-site. New technologies and methods must be incorporated into future planning and development at The Forks and the principles of industrial ecology Fully incorporated. This study has two objectives. The first is to identify alternative composting technologies that could be used for oqanic waste management at The Forks as an integrd part of a Market garden project. as put forward in The Forks North Portage P~artnership's Business Plan (October 1996). The second is to present an organic waste management plan and implementation strategy suitable for incorporation into current waste management systems at The Forks. Results of this study identiQ that seventy percent of the waste Stream is compostable. In 199Y96. disposa1 of this materials in city owned land fil1 sites cost the Partnership in excess of $50.000 in collection and disposa1 fees. Study results also indicate that an in-vesse1 composting system best fit needs at The Forks. Finally. the results suggest that comprehensive source separation programs are key to the success of on-site composting . It is recommended that the Partnership take the following actions: 1. adopt a source separation program and appoint a coordinator to monitor and maintain it; .. 11 introduce an in-vesse1 composting system and purchase the fùlly enclosed flow-through equipment required: iii incorporate the concepts of industrial ecology and ecological design into the Planning and Deveh~menfGuidelines: iv set aside sufficient hdsfor capital costs and further research to build upon the available base of knowledge and track operational costs: v capitalize on current economic. environmental and educational incentives. Wallace April. 1998 Page 1 Chapter One INTRODUCTION 1.0 Background and Context The Forks is a 56 acre site in the heart of downtown Winnipeg. located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. The site is bounded by the Assiniboine River and Red Rivers on the south. the Red River on the east. and the CN High Line (main line) and some City owned properties on the West and north. The Forks Renewal Corporation was established in 1987 by the Municipal. Provincial and Federal governments to omand redevelop the land at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers and the adjacent East Yards on their behalf. Through public consultation the Board of The Forks Renewal Corporation concluded that the site should be redeveloped as a special and distinct public gathering place that adds to the quality of life in the region. A surprising, intriguing expression that immediately draws our attention. The spontaneous reaction is that «industrial ecology» is a contradiction in terms, something of an oxymoron, like «obscure clarity» or «burning ice». Why this reflex? Probably because we are used to considering the industrial system as isolated from the Biosphere, with factories and cities on one side and nature on the other, the problem consisting in trying to minimize the impact of the industrial system on what is «outside» of it: its surroundings, the «environment». As early as the 1950’s, this end-of-pipe angle was the one adopted by ecologists, whose first serious studies focused on the consequences of the various forms of pollution on nature. In this perspective on the industrial system, human industrial activity as such remained outside of the field of research. Industrial ecology explores the opposite assumption: the industrial system can be seen as a certain kind of ecosystem. After all, the industrial system, just as natural ecosystems, can be described as a particular distribution of materials, energy, and information flows. Furthermore, the entire industrial system relies on resources and services provided by the Biosphere, from which it cannot be dissociated. (It should be specified that .«industrial», in the context of industrial ecology, refers to all human activities occurring within the modern technological society.

In this study, an intensive review of industrial ecology principles, its application areas and the extent to which industrial ecology has been applied was documented. It was observed that the effective application of industrial ecology is critical for sustainability, since the industry is the main polluter of the environment. It was further inferred that, there is inadequate applicability of the industrial ecology principles by developed countries. Thus I hypothesized that, there is a great opportunity for new investment in this field considering the absence of modern means for the liquid and solid waste management. For example, improper incineration of wastes such as hospital wastes, and the electrical and electronic equipment was perceived to bring health problems in the near future. Since the 1950s we have seen a series of ideas and conceptual frameworks that have emerged from studies that illustrate the disconnect between our exploitative culture and the Earth's limited resources. The anthrosphere constitutes a fifth sphere of the environment, along with the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Any intelligent effort to maintain and enhance environmental quality must consider the anthrosphere along with these other four spheres. This chapter is devoted primarily to the anthrosphere. In so doing, it emphasizes the emerging science of industrial ecology, defined and explained below. Industrial ecology is an approach based upon systems engineering and ecolo- gical principles that integrates the production and consumption aspects of the design, production, use, and termination (decommissioning) of products and ser- vices in a manner that minimizes environmental impact while optimizing utilization of resources, energy, and capital. The practice of industrial ecology represents an environmentally acceptable, sustainable means of providing goods and services. It is closely tied with environmental chemistry, and the two sciences work synergistically with each other. Industrial ecology works within a system of industrial ecosystems, which mimic natural ecosystems. Natural ecosystems, usually driven by solar energy and photosynthesis, consist of an assembly of mutually interacting organisms and their environment, in which materials are interchanged in a largely cyclical manner. An ideal system of industrial ecology follows the flow of energy and materials through several levels, uses wastes from one part of the system as raw material for another part, and maximizes the efficiency of energy utilization.

    1. Industrial ecology: goals and definitions Reid Lifset and Thomas E. Graedel Setting out the goals and boundaries of an emerging field is a hapless task. Set them too conservatively and the potential of the field is thwarted. Set them too expansively and the field loses its distinctive identity. Spend too much time on this task and scarce resources may be diverted from making concrete progress in the field. But in a field with a name as provocative and oxymoronic as industrial ecology, the description of the goals and definitions is crucial. Hence this introductory chapter describes the field of industrial ecology, identifying its key topics, characteristic approaches and tools. The objective is to provide a map of the endeavors that comprise industrial ecology and how those endeavors relate to each other. In doing so, we seek to provide a common basis of discussion, allowing us then to delve into more conceptual discussions of the nature of the field. No field has unanimity on goals and boundaries. A field as new and as ambitious as industrial ecology surely has a long way to go to achieve even a measure of consensus on these matters, but, as we hope this chapter shows, there is much that is coalescing in research, analysis and practice. DEFINING INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY The very name industrial ecology conveys some of the content of the field. Industrial ecology is industrial in that it focuses on product design and manufacturing processes. It views firms as agents for environmental improvement because they possess the technolog- ical expertise that is critical to the successful execution of environmentally informed design of products and processes.
