Laguna de Tamiahua is ecologically and economically important as a nursery area that favours the recruitment of species that sustain traditional fisheries. It has been studied previously, though not throughout its whole area, and considering the variety of habitats that sustain these fisheries, as well as an increase in population growth that impacts the system. The objectives of this study were to present an updated list of fish species, data on special status, new records, commercial importance, dominance, density, ecotic position, and the spatial and temporal distribution of species in the lagoon, together with a comparison of Tamiahua with 14 other Gulf of Mexico lagoons. Materials and methods. Fish were collected in August and December 1996 with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl from different habitats throughout the lagoon. The species were identified, classified in relation to special status, new records, commercial importance, density, dominance, ecotic position, and spatial distribution patterns. -

'!he study area included the coastal waters between Cape Fear am Cape Cod with bottom depths greater or equal than 6 meters. Weakfish fed primarily on schoolirg fish, except for juveniles (under 21 an FL) v.hich depended almost exclusively on mysid shrimp, namely Necmysis americana. Anchovies, especially bay anchovies, were the single most important fish prey of -weakfish. Although menhaden and other cl upeids were reported as a staple food of weakfish in nearshore and estuarine waters (ie. waters with depths less than 6 meters), these species were of little importance to weakfish in this stooy area. The results also sho-wed weakfisn to occassionally feed on decapod shrimp, crabs, squid, and rarely polychaete wonns. Dietary differences were evident according to the geographic area, season, and year. This variability seems related to fluctuations in distribution and abundance of both predator and prey. CALIFORNIA MARINE FISH LANDINGS FOR 1972 LEO PINKAS Marine Resources Region 1.1. INTRODUCTION The protection, propagation, and wise utilization of California's living marine resources (established as common property by statute, Section 1600, Fish and Game Code) is dependent upon the welding of biological, environment- al, economic, and sociological factors. Fundamental to each of these factors, as well as the entire management pro- cess, are harvest records. The California Department of Fish and Game began gathering commercial fisheries land- ing data in 1916. Commercial fish catches were first published in 1929 for the years 1926 and 1927. This report, the 32nd in the landing series, is for the calendar year 1972. It summarizes commercial fishing activities in marine as well as fresh waters and includes the catches of the sportfishing partyboat fleet. Preliminary landing data are published annually in the circular series which also enumerates certain fishery products produced from the catch. -

Castellini1 Comparisons of the external morphology and analysis of osteological features of the postcranial and appendicular skeletons of three southwestern Atlantic flatfish species of the genus Paralichthys (P. isosceles, P. orbignyanus and P. patagonicus) were carried out. Bones are described, and detailed morphological, morphometric and meristic characteristics of these flounders are given in order to provide information about the external and internal morphology of three species of Paralichthys occurring in the south-west Atlantic waters that add new information and will help regarding within the framework of a phylogenetic study of the group. Interspecific differences were found in the number of vertebrae and intermuscular bones, as well as in the morphology and morphometry of vertebrae, caudal skeletons, pectoral and pelvic girdle bones. Relationships between bones are discussed and bone characteristics compared with those found in other species of Paralichthys and in other pleuronectiform species. The position of Paralichthys isosceles within Paralichthys is discussed, along with other congeners such as P. triocellatus and P. oblongus. NMFS is also charged with the development and implementation of policies for managing national fishing grounds, development and enforcement of domestic fisheries regulations, surveillance of foreign fishing off United States coastal waters, and the development and enforcement of international fishery agreements and policies. NMFS also assists the fishing industry through- marketing service and economic analysis programs, and mortgage insurance and vessel construction subsidies. LEA Marine Resources Region 1972 ABSTRACT This is a comprehensive identification guide encompassing all shallow marine fishes within California waters. Geographic range limits, maximum size, depth range, a brief color description, and some meristic counts including, if available: fin ray counts, lateral line pores, lateral line scales, gill rakers, and vertebrae are given. Body proportions and shapes are used in the keys and a state- ment concerning the rarity or commonness in California is given for each species. In all, 554 species are described. Three of these have not been re- corded or confirmed as occurring in California waters but are included since they are apt to appear. The remainder have been recorded as occurring in an area between the Mexican and Oregon borders and offshore to at least 50 miles. Five of California species as yet have not been named or described, and ichthyologists studying these new forms have given information on identification to enable inclusion here. A dichotomous key to 144 families includes an outline figure of a repre- sentative for all but two families. Keys are presented for all larger families, and diagnostic features are pointed out on most of the figures. Illustrations are presented for all but eight species. Of the 554 species, 439 are found primarily in depths less than 400 ft., 48 are meso- or bathypelagic species, and 67 are deepwater bottom dwelling forms rarely taken in less than 400 ft. -

ISSN 0749-0208. ••e • • Trophic relationships were examined in the surf zone at a beach site in South Carolina during ~. the summer of 1980. Analysis of stomach contents was conducted on the seven most abundant f!IFJll?"" --= fish species and two most abundant crab species. The fishes, Anchoa mitchilli, Anchoa hepsetus, and Menidia menidia, were primarily planktivorous, whereas Menticirrhue littoralis, Trachin .. .--- otus carolinus, and Arius felis preyed on benthic fauna. Mugil curema consumed primarily sand, containing diatoms and detritus. The crabs, Arenaeus cribrarius and Callinectes eapidus, preyed on benthic organisms. Benthic prey, particularly the mole crab, Emerita talpoida, contributed most of the biomass to the higher trophic levels, although other invertebrates and plankton were also important prey items. Comparisons with other studies revealed that this food web was a fairly typical of high energy beaches in the southeastern United States. Sand Flounder (Family Paralichthyidae) Diversity in North Carolina By the NCFishes.com Team Along North Carolina’s shore there are four families of flatfish comprising 36 species having eyes on the left side of their body facing upward when lying in or atop the substrate (NCFishes.com; Table 1; Figure 1). The families and species can be confusing to tell apart. The key characteristics provided for in Table 1 should enable one to differentiate between the four families and this document will aid you in the identification of the species in the Family Paralichthyidae in North Carolina.
