THE BICYCLE RING IN AARHUS, DENMARK: a case study of maintaining people friendly environments while managing cycling growth Urban Planning & Management | Master Thesis | Aalborg University | June 2017 Estella Johanna Hollander & Matilda Kristina Porsö Title: The Bicycle Ring in Aarhus, Denmark: a case study of maintaining people friendly environments while managing cycling growth Study: M.Sc. in UrBan Planning and Management, School of Architecture, Design and Planning, AalBorg University Project period: FeBruary to June 2017 Authors: Estella Johanna Hollander and Matilda Kristina Porsö Supervisor: Gunvor RiBer Larsen Pages: 111 pages Appendices: 29 pages (A-E) i Abstract This research project seeks to analyze the relationship Between cycling and people friendly environments, specifically focusing on the growth in cycling numbers and the associated challenges. To exemplify this relationship, this research project uses a case study of the Bicycle Ring (Cykelringen) in Aarhus, Denmark. Four corners around the Bicycle Ring, with different characteristics in the Built environment, are explored further. In cities with a growing population, such as Aarhus, moBility is an important focus because the amount of travel will increase, putting a higher pressure on the existing infrastructure. In Aarhus, cycling is used as a tool to facilitate the future demand of travel and to overcome the negative externalities associated with car travel. The outcome of improved mobility and accessibility is seen as complementary to a good city life in puBlic spaces. Therefore, it is argued that cycling is a tool to facilitate people friendly environments. Recently, the City of Aarhus has implemented cycle streets around the Bicycle Ring as a solution to improve the conditions around the ring.

Aarhus is located in Central Denmark on the eastern side of the Jutland peninsula. Jutland is the only part of Denmark that is connected to the mainland of Europe as 41% of the country consists of 443 named islands. The capital Copenhagen is on the island Zealand (Sjælland in Danish), which is 157 km south-east of Aarhus measured in a straight line and 303 km when driving across the island2 Funen (Fyn in Danish). Aarhus has 242,914 inhabitants2 in the urban area (of 91 km ) and 306,650 in the municipal area (of 467 km ). Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark not only measured in size, but also in the extent of trade, education, industry and cultural activities. The main employers of Aarhus are the Aarhus Municipality and the Aarhus University Hospital. th Aarhus originated in the 8 century from a Viking settlement, which was built around Aarhus River and still marks the centre of town and laid the foundation for the major industrial port that Aarhus has today. Many old buildings in the city have been preserved, for example, the Aarhus Custom House (Toldkammeret), the Aarhus Theatre (Aarhus Teater), Marselisborg Palace (Marselisborg Slot) and the Aarhus Cathedral, which represent historic landmarks across the city. Aarhus is a pulsating city offering a broad range of educational institutions and a vibrant and active student life.

Art Weekend NLINE ORTFOLIO EVIEW Aarhus O P R 2020 presented by Aarhus Billedkunstcenter / Aarhus Center for Visual Art Luna Lund Jensen Instagram: @lunalundjensen Luna Lund Jensen (b. 1992) lives and works in Aarhus, Denmark and graduated from Jutland Art Academy in 2020. She works with creating fabulations and rethinking already existing narrative structures. Her works explore these narratives in previous works through themes such as human/animal relationships in 2d drawn animated video, application of human or- gans to lab mice in small scale sculpture, turning female demons from Japanese Noh theatre into vengeful protagonists in a filmed opera play, exploring the materiality and mythology of water by pouring water out of simulated antique vases in video, and the act of storytelling itself, through exploring oral storytelling practices in Nordic folk tales as well as text works. Throughout these works, Jensen suggests the use of storytelling as a tool for thinking. Jeg er en kniv i din strube, jeg er sværdet ved din side, jeg er tænderne omkring dig 08.05.–13.05.2020 at Kunsthal Aarhus Multi-screen video and sound installation Link to video: https://vimeo.com/419826169 (password: foxy) In the video work I am a knife in your throat, I am the sword by your side, I am the teeth around you (2020) Luna Lund Jensen’s drawn animations appear in small passages of detached action on an empty, white background. The animations are drawn over found video material and show foxes in- teracting with humans. They are accompanied by a medieval-sounding piece of music with song.

Basically, the purpose of the intrface project is to develop and cultivate partnerships between secondary schools and local museums with a view to producing educational coursework for students enrolled at these schools. In Denmark, almost every secondary school has a mu- seum right around the corner. Often teachers are not very familiar with them and do not make use of them as a learning resource in their lessons. When museums are included in lesson plans, the ones chosen are usu- ally large, famous museums in the capital city or abroad. Like their teachers, students often know very little about the learn- ing potential of local museums, or of museums, period. Their Kick-off conference at the Museum of Aarhus, Sept. 8. 2008 cultural heritage as presented in the local museums often remains an unexplored source of knowledge and good experiences. The overall ambition of the intrface project is to do something about that. What is intrface? The intrface project evolved out of several smaller, shorter projects, the purpose of which was to develop collaboration between a number of museums and secondary schools as well as with the University of Aarhus. Actual planning of the intrface project started in 2007 but the details of how it would be run and the funding needed to put the plans in action were not in place until early 2008. It was launched on September 8, 2008 at the Mu- seum of Aarhus and is to end July 31, 2011.
