We ask that you make a willing, noble, and enthusiastic response to God’s call. Christ is calling you indeed! The Spirit is urging you. You who are in the younger generation: you, too, are being called! Welcome this call with an eager heart and a generous spirit. It is the Lord, through this council, who is once more inviting all Christians of every level of the Church to work diligently in the harvest. His latest book, Faith, Mission and Challenge in Catholic Education has been published by Routledge in the World Library of Educationalists Series (2016) Part 1: Historical Background INTRODUCTION : Gravissimum Educationis, ‘a rather weak document’ (Ratzinger, 1966) Gravissimum Educationis (1965) failed to excite much interest and discussion at the time of its publication and subsequent comment upon it has been generally critical. Thus we find Professor Alan McClelland (1991) describing it as ‘somewhat uninspiring and, in places almost platitudinous’ (p.172). In a later scholarly paper entitled, ‘Toward a Theology of Catholic Education’ (1999), Dr.Brian Kelty lamented the fact that Gravissimum Educationis largely repeated the teaching of Pius XI that Christian education should be seen as ‘preparation for eternal life in the world to come’ (p.11), (an entirely proper and classic Catholic understanding), but failed to develop thinking about, ‘preparing people capable of working for the transformation of this world’ (p.13). Perhaps the most influential judgment on the document had already been made by Professor Joseph Ratzinger in his book, Theological Highlights of Vatican II (1966) in which he described the Decree on Christian Education as ‘ unfortunately, a rather weak document’ (p.254).

    EDUCA - International Catholic Journal of Education, 6, 2021, 94-110 FORMATION OF THE HEART: MEMORY, LITURGY AND THE IDENTITY OF CATHOLIC STUDENT TEACHERS Fr Stephen Reilly* Mary Lappin** Abstract Twenty years on from the merger of Scotland’s Catholic teacher training college with the University of Glasgow, this paper examines the formation of Catholic teachers in Scotland in light of the Holy See’s vision. It concludes that the academic formation and opportunities for dialogue allow such a vision to be fulfilled to a large degree. What remains is to present students with a compelling vision of Catholic educational philosophy and an experiential “formation of the heart”. After examining the rich idea of the heart in biblical thought, it analyses empirical research among Catholic students and beginning teachers in Australia and Scotland and the potential of liturgical formation. Drawing on the biblical and liturgical concept of memorial, it explores liturgy’s ability to form the memory of an individual and a community, putting this concept in dialogue with the theory of the ‘reminiscence bump’, a period of strong identity formation in young adults. It concludes by suggesting ways in which liturgy – in parish, at university, and on pilgrimage – can help to form the memory, the identity, and the heart of Catholic education students. Rubio Abstract This thesis will show that the Second Vatican Council set in motion new directions that enabled subsequent ecclesiology to regard the family as a Domestic Church. The Introduction provides normative definitions of key terms and an overview of the thesis. Chapter One briefly examines the history and theology of the Domestic Church before the Second Vatican Council from evidence in the New Testament, by patristic writings about marriage, and in magisterial teachings through the ages up to Vatican II. Chapter Two has three sections covering the development of the theology of the Domestic Church during and since the Second Vatican Council: two significant developments during Vatican II that had profound implications for family life as the Domestic Church, the ecclesiological insights that emerged out of the Council, and subsequent papal ecclesiological development. Chapter Three addresses the new ecclesiological directions for the Domestic Church in three sections: the status of the expression “Domestic Church,” the sacramentality of the Domestic Church, and the implications for parish and family ministry. Introduction: the centrality of education Although the Catholic Church attends to the well-being of young people1 in a broad variety of different ways - their physical health, their spiritual needs, and their economic opportunities, for example - the most pervasive and the most fundamental way in which it serves youth is through education. Education, as will be explained in more detail below, is understood in the Christian context to refer broadly to the formation of young people to lead lives of maturity and loving service to God and to neighbor in fulfillment of their vocational destinies. It is therefore not limited to formal schooling and instruction alone. Nevertheless, a glance at some of the basic statistics regarding the Catholic Church’s activity in providing formal educational opportunities around the world will help to give a sense of the centrality and depth of its commitment. The Church provides education through more than 95,000 elementary schools and 42,000 secondary schools,2 and well over 1,500 Catholic universities worldwide.3 Approximately 32 million elementary students and 18 million secondary students are enrolled in Catholic schools around the world today.4 Although there are no reliable data regarding the numbers of Catholic students as opposed to students of other religions [or none) in these schools, it is certain that a large number, and in some countries even a majority, of these students are not Catholic, showing tangibly that the Church's service to youth though education is not limited merely to serving the members of its own faith community.

  • The Second Vatican Council
    The Second Vatican Council The twenty-first ecumenical council of the Catholic Church was first announced by Pope John XXIII on January 25, 1959. He opened the council on October 11, 1962, and closed the first session on December 8 of the same year. After Pope John's death in 1963, his successor, Pope Paul VI, reconvened the council, which had three more sessions in the fall of each succeeding year. The closing session ended on December 8, 1965. A combined total of 2,865 bishops and prelates attended the council, which issued sixteen formal documents as follows: CONSTITUTIONS: 1. Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium) explained the Church's nature as a sign and instrument of communion with God and of unity among men. It also clarified the Church's mission as the universal sacrament of salvation. 2. Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum) distinguished Sacred Scripture from Sacred Tradition, declared that the Bible must be interpreted under the Church's guidance, and explained how development of doctrine is the Church's ever-deeper understanding of what God has once and for all revealed to the human race. 3. Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium) sought to adapt more closely to the needs of our age those institutions which are subject to change, to foster Christian reunion, and to strengthen the Church's evangelization. 4. Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes) identifies atheism as one of the most serious problems of our times, gives the most extensive treatment of marriage and the family in conciliar history, and declares the Church's strong position on war and peace in the nuclear age.

    THE SACRED CONGREGATION FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL INTRODUCTION 1. The Catholic school is receiving more and more attention in the Church since the Second Vatican Council, with particular emphasis on the Church as she appears in the Constitutions Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes. In the Council's Declaration Gravissimum Educationis it is discussed in the wider sphere of Christian education. The present document develops the idea of this Declaration, limiting itself to a deeper reflection on the Catholic school. 2. The Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education is aware of the serious problems which are an integral part of Christian education in a pluralistic society. It regards as a prime duty, therefore, the focusing of any attention on the nature and distinctive characteristics of school which would present itself as Catholic. Yet the diverse situations and legal systems in which the Catholic school has to function in Christian and non-Christian countries demand that local problems be faced and solved by each Church within its own social-cultural context. 3. While acknowledging this duty of the local Churches, the Sacred Congregation believes that now is the opportune moment to offer its own contribution by re-emphasising clearly the educational value of the Catholic school. It is in this value that the Catholic school's fundamental reason for existing and the basis of its genuine apostolate is to be found. This document does not pretend to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject; it merely proposes to state the premises that will lead to further fruitful study and implementation.

Implicaciones para la educación católica Leonardo Franchi School of Education, University of Glasgow, Scotland Abstract In Laudato Si’ Pope Francis has offered a ‘position paper’ on care for the common good. Chapter Six, ‘Ecological Education and Spirituality’, is especially relevant for those overseeing the operation of Catholic schools. A deeper understanding of Laudato Si’ can be gained from comparison with two magisterial documents written by Pope Emeritus: the message for the World Day of Prayer for Peace in 2007 and the encyclical Caritas in Veritate (Pope Benedict XVI, 2009a, 2009b). Study of the issues raised in these texts offers a broad frame of reference. Using the method of document analysis, our understanding of Laudato Si’ can be viewed in the context of contemporary magisterial teaching on education. This term now marks a fresh direction in the underlying principles of Catholic education.
