TTM 972 18.1. 2045- UKR: Ukrainske Radio. TTM 1404 3.1. 1400- POL: Twoje Radio Chojnice, Chojnice. Tämäkin uusi tuttavavuus minulle. Nousi mukavasti tasaidille. Ja Karol Domozych vahvisti e-raportin muutamassa minuutissa. JHY/V 1449 14.1. 0200- I: RAI Radio 1. TTM 1494 7.1. 0610- MDA: Radio Moldova. ID ja kansanmusiikkia aamun virkistykseksi. TTM Brittein saaret 990 24.12.08 0654- G: BBC R Aberdeen. Tämänhän pitäisi WRH:n mukaan olla vain FM:llä, mutta tässä sitä vaan tuli "News for the Northeast and the northern isles", jossa kaikki uutisaiheet olivat Aberdeenista. TTH 1485 4.1. 0900- G: Gold, Newbury. Päihitti Humbersiden sopivasti tasalta. JHY/V 1521 4.1. 0800- G: Forest of Dean R, Coleford. Muutoin taajuutta hallitsi Gold. Täydennys 14.1: Tony Bergonzi lähetti yhteis e-verifioinnin minulle ja vjr:lle kertoen "It was a great surprise so we made these contacts into programme feature." Oikea QSL:kin on tulossa: "We have sent you each a QSL card and Business Card. Keeping listing through the static and be the envy of your friends.". JHY/V 1530 30.12.08 0700- G: Celtic Music Radio, Glasgow. Vastaus saapui nopeasti: "Jim, thank you for your email message and attached audio clip. I can confirm that the audio is our news-reader Robert John Wright with him ending a bulletin with the weather forecast for the Glasgow area. Celtic Music Radio broadcasts on 1530 kHz AM/MW from a transmitter site on the banks of the River Clyde close to the centre of Glasgow. Emrp is as stated by Ofcom as 55 Watts. TTH 684 23.12.08 0625- E: RNE1 Andalucia. Viisi minuuttia alueohjelmaa. TTH 738 24.12.08 0625- E: RNE1 Catalunya. Alueuutisten alkuosa kuului hyvin, mutta sitten tuli päälle WRN Moskova, joka lähetti YLEn selkouutisia. "studiossa ... on ... Eliiiisa .. Toivola". TTH 1359 7.1. 2200- E: RNE. MR 1593 7.1. 1600- EGY: ERTU Matruh R. Paikallista. MR 5066.36 23.12.08 0358- COD: R Tele Candip, Bunia. Kuuluu hyvin aloittaessaan. Noin 0430 alkaa ranskankielinen ohjelma. TTH 6115 9.1. 1820-1849 COG: R Congo, Brazzaville. Ilmeisesti testaili, koska modulaatiotaso vaihteli nollasta "hyvään". Ei ole seuraavina päivinä kuulunut. Ollut inaktiivinen lyhyillä melko kauan. JSA Aasia 558 11.1. 1505- CHN: CNR Xinjang , Hutubi. Uiguuria, XJ:stä kuului nippu asemia, 963,1107,1233 jne. Iranilainen ottaa taajuuden haltuunsa jahka ilta etenee. Hutubi on lähellä Ürümqia varsin avarissa maisemissa. SSS 801 11.1. 1300- TWN: Voice of Kuanghua, Kuanyin. Pamauttaa tasalta sellaiset idit, että menee iho kananlihalle. Raporttiin voikin sitten kirjoitella sitkeästi sanaa Taiwan. Aseman soitannollinen anti on oikein mukavaa varsinkin kun sitä vertaa etelälangalla luureihin tulvivaan BR:n mono- toniseen nuorisojytkeeseen. SSS 882 11.1. 1505- IND: AIR Imphal. Tällainenkin ihme, yleensä taajuudella valtaa pitää TWR Sri Lankasta. SSS 945 11.1. 1446- IND: AIR Sambalpur. Vallan kaunis signaali. SSS 1179 11.1. 1330- IND: AIR Rewa. Siveä kansalainen ei moista kehtaisi vihjaista. Kiinalainen XJ pamautti jämäkät idit 13.38 ja upotti intialaisen. SSS 1242 23.12.08 1300- VTN: Vo Vietnam, Thoi Long. Ranskankielinen ohjelma La Voix du Vietnam. Kuului selväsi paremmin kuin englanninkielinen ohjelma pari tuntia myöhemmin. TTH 1287 9.1. 0100- ISR: Galei Zahal. TK 1494 12.1. 1240-1320 PHL: DWSS Quezon City. Ny vasta hokasin, että tässähän on olut filsu yläspilitillä aiemminkin. Nyt hyvät idit, tälläkin tuplakirjaimin, kuten muilla vastaavilla "D-W- double-S 14-94". Xinjiang kiinaksi ja MDA tasalla, tämä [1494.017]. TK 1539 12.1. 2215- UAE: VOA, Radio Aap Ki. Musiikkia ja 22:19 ohjelma- ja asemakuulutukset. Tuli kohtalaisesti muiden asemien häiritessä. TTM 1548 12.1. 1246- PHL: DZSD Super R, Dagupan. Vihdoin idillä tämäkin. Keli oli kohdallaan, eikä eurot kiusanneet vielä. Taajuuden määritys hankalaa, se lienee about Forth:n kanssa samassa n. -1 Hz. Aseman raporttien (suoria liikenne yms raportteja) tunnari erottuu helposti. Vain pääaseman kutsuja. TK 1575 12.1. 2200- UAE: Radio Farda. TTM 1593 8.1. 1400- IND: AIR Bhopal. // 4810 kHz. MR 3406 12.1. 1757- SYR: ORTAS. LSB. //918 jonka audio on muutaman sekunnin jäljessä. Lähetinpaikka toistaiseksi tuntematon. JSA 5815 9.1. 1800- Unid: Al Aqsa TV audio. Arabiaa. TK 2485 14.1. 2110- AUS: VL8K, NTSS Katherine. RKA Pohjois-Amerikka 560 18.1. 0700- USA: WGAN Portland ME. MJ 560 2.12.08 0640- USA: KMON Great Falls MT. Peitti mielenkiintoisen CtoC aseman alleen. TJV 570 13.1. 2205- GRL: KNR Nuuk. ARK 570 8.1. 0700- USA: WMCA New York, NY. "W-M-C-A, New York's Christian talk" - pääsin vihdoin eroon 6. päivän nauhojen hinkkaamisesta, ja 8. pvä alkaa loistavasti.

  • Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage
Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.

The year before I had listened with excitement to the launch of our local commercial station, Liverpool's Radio City, and wanted to find out what other stations I might be able to pick up. In those days the Guide covered TV as well as radio, which could only manage to fill two pages – but then there were only 19 “ILR” stations.
