    “Sent Out By Our Great Father” Zebulon Montgomery Pike’s Journal and Route Across Kansas, 1806 edited by Leo E. Oliva ebulon Montgomery Pike, a lieutenant in the First U.S. Infantry, led an exploring expe- dition in search of the source of the Mississippi River in 1805–1806. Soon after his return to St. Louis in July 1806, General James Wilkinson sent Lieutenant Pike, promoted to cap- tain a few weeks later, to explore the southwestern portion of the Louisiana Purchase, de- parting from the military post of Belle Fontaine near St. Louis on July 15, 1806. His expedition began as Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were nearing completion of their two-year expedition up the Missouri River and across the mountains to the Pacific Ocean and back. Pike crossed present Mis- Zsouri, most of the way by boat on the Missouri and Osage Rivers, where he delivered fifty-one mem- bers of the Osage tribe to the village of the Grand Osage in late August. On September 3 Pike entered present Kansas at the end of the day. His command, including Lieutenant James B. Wilkinson (son of General Wilkinson), Dr. John H. Robinson (civilian surgeon accompanying the ex- pedition), interpreter Antoine François “Baronet” Vásquez (called Baroney in the journal), and eighteen en- listed men, was accompanied by several Osages and two Pawnees as guides. Because of bad feelings between the Osage and Kansa Indians, some of Pike’s Osage guides turned back, and those who continued led his party a Leo E. Oliva, a native Kansan and a former university professor, became interested in frontier military history during the centennial celebration of the founding of Fort Larned in 1959 and has been researching and writing about the frontier army ever since.

For estimates of ocean– 8 atmosphere oscillations of potential importance to the basin, we used the following indices 9 (Table S1): mean November-March North Pacific Index (NPI) for 1912-2011 as a measure of the 10 strength of the Aleutian Low (Trenberth and Hurrell, 1994); the mean October-March PNA to 11 estimate meridional versus zonal flow (Wallace and Gutzler, 1981; Leathers et al., 1991); the 12 mean June through November Southern Ocean Index (SOI) as a measure of the atmospheric 13 component of ENSO (Ropelewski and Jones, 1987; Redmond and Koch, 1991); the mean 14 October through March and April through July NAO to estimate Atlantic pressure patterns 15 (Hurrell 1995; Jones et al., 1997); and the mean water-year AMO as a measure of Atlantic SSTs 16 (Enfield et al., 2001; McCabe et al. 2004). 17 Time series of the climate indices for 1912-2011 were compared with time series of 18 naturalized water-year streamflow for 86 river records, including 18 naturalized records from the 19 main stem of the Missouri River from the U.S.

I look forward to John Patrick Michael Murphy’s columns,” - We have begun our Preservation/ Interpretation lists for each state, - We have completed our Draft Auto and Hike/Bike Tours, and are now field surveying segments. Our effort coincides with an attempt to lower Federal costs for our legislation, - We are establishing guidelines for Association publishing. The actions at Vernon County, Missouri placed unauthorized fill in over 3 1 acres of wetlands at four different locations on the property. The wetlands are immediately adjacent to the Little Osage River which is a perennial stream.

  • The 1951 Kansas - Missouri Floods
    The 1951 Kansas - Missouri Floods ... Have We Forgotten? Introduction - This report was originally written as NWS Technical Attachment 81-11 in 1981, the thirtieth anniversary of this devastating flood. The co-authors of the original report were Robert Cox, Ernest Kary, Lee Larson, Billy Olsen, and Craig Warren, all hydrologists at the Missouri Basin River Forecast Center at that time. Although most of the original report remains accurate today, Robert Cox has updated portions of the report in light of occurrences over the past twenty years. Comparisons of the 1951 flood to the events of 1993 as well as many other parenthetic remarks are examples of these revisions. The Storms of 1951 - Fifty years ago, the stage was being set for one of the greatest natural disasters ever to hit the Midwest. May, June and July of 1951 saw record rainfalls over most of Kansas and Missouri, resulting in record flooding on the Kansas, Osage, Neosho, Verdigris and Missouri Rivers. Twenty-eight lives were lost and damage totaled nearly 1 billion dollars. (Please note that monetary damages mentioned in this report are in 1951 dollars, unless otherwise stated. 1951 dollars can be equated to 2001 dollars using a factor of 6.83. The total damage would be $6.4 billion today.) More than 150 communities were devastated by the floods including two state capitals, Topeka and Jefferson City, as well as both Kansas Cities. Most of Kansas and Missouri as well as large portions of Nebraska and Oklahoma had monthly precipitation totaling 200 percent of normal in May, 300 percent in June, and 400 percent in July of 1951.

Executive Summary The East Osage River Basin is found in central Missouri in the Missouri counties of Osage, Maries, Cole, Pulaski, Miller, Camden, Morgan, Benton, and Hickory and encompasses 2,474.52 mi2. This basin has been divided into two 8-digit hydrologic units (HUCs) and fourteen 11-digit HUCs. Lake of the Ozarks was formed in 1931 in the western half of the East Osage River Basin. Geomorphology This basin lies within a dissected plateau known as the Salem Plateau and is represented by four of Missouri’s natural divisions.

    2021 National Hydrologic Assessment Released on March 18, 2021 Figure 1: National Spring Flood Risk defined by risk of exceeding Minor, Moderate, and Major Flood Levels. 1 of 19 Executive Summary The 2021 National Hydrologic Assessment offers an analysis of flood risk, water supply, and ice break-up and jam flooding for spring 2021 based on late summer, fall, and winter precipitation, frost depth, soil saturation levels, snowpack, current streamflow, and projected spring weather. NOAA's network of 122 Weather Forecast Offices, 13 River Forecast Centers, National Water Center, and other national centers nationwide assess this risk, summarized here at the national scale. This spring season, approximately 82 million people are at risk for flooding in their communities, with nearly 9 million at risk for moderate flooding. Overall, a reduced risk of spring flooding exists this year primarily due to a mainly dry fall and winter, along with limited snow still remaining on the ground. Major flooding is not expected this spring season. Minor to moderate flooding is ongoing across portions of the Lower Missouri River Basin with the flood risk predicted to continue through spring. The exception to the reduced risk is over the Coastal Plain of the Carolinas and Lower Ohio River Basin where flooding is predicted this spring, driven by above normal precipitation over the winter months, which has led to ongoing flooding, elevated streamflows, and highly saturated soil conditions. This wet pattern is expected to continue across the Coastal Plain of the Carolinas and Lower Ohio River Basin through spring, making these regions vulnerable to spring flooding.

    “A Very Dear Spot”: The Development of Fort Scott, Kansas, 1890-1920 Daron Blake HIST 533: Lost Kansas Communities Dr. MJ Morgan Chapman Center for Rural Studies Fall 2011 This paper examines the development of Fort Scott, Kansas from 1890 to 1920 and compares this small city with other towns in southeastern Kansas at the time. The diversification of industry brought by the railroad, combined with a stabilized population level, transformed Fort Scott into a small industrial city unique in southeastern Kansas for its strong sense of community of a smaller town and the industrial diversity of a larger city. Introduction In 1916, insurance agent and amateur poet J.S. Penney wrote of his beloved home town of Fort Scott: “We love her because her streets are clean; her beautiful lawns are clothed in green, Because her street-cars are so slow, and never in haste, when we want to go.”1 Fort Scott, county seat of Bourbon County in southeastern Kansas, lay between the timbered banks of the Marmaton River and Mill Creek. Fort Scott began as a military outpost. It was established in 1842 as part of a governmental attempt to protect settlers and Indians from one another by creating a frontier of forts and roads that was policed by the militia. The fort itself did not see military action until the Civil War, but the area surrounding the post began to draw more and more settlers, who were attracted to the abundant natural resources and pleasant climate of southeastern Kansas. In April of 1858, David E. Cobb was travelling along the Marmaton and looking for a spot to claim for his own.
