Course Objectives 1. To see how a robust theology of the covenant emerges from God’s full revelation in Scripture. 2. To examine the role of covenant in God’s redemptive purposes, giving attention to both the interrelationship and the development of the various covenants found in Scripture. 3. To enable the student to better grasp issues that have arisen in covenantal thought and the centrality of covenant theology in some areas of contemporary debate. 4. To consider the influence of God’s covenant and of covenant theology on the life of the Church today, placing particular emphasis on how covenant theology is a rich resource for preaching, teaching, and counseling God’s people. AVIAN IMAGERY AND DEITY The first metaphor we meet with in the Bible likens the Creator-Spirit to a bird hovering over the deep-and-darkness (Gen 1:2). This same avian image is also a key feature in the Exodus 12 account of the paschal event, but it has remained hidden behind the mistranslation of the crucial verb päsah. Not "pass over" but "hover over" is the meaning of this word, as the present essay hopes to demonstrate. But before investigating päsah, as well as the noun pesah, a bit more background on the use of avian imagery for deity. "You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself" (Exod 19:4). So the Lord described his guidance of Israel by the Glory-cloud at the exodus. Moses used this figure of the eagle and its young when reviewing these same historical realities in Deut 32:10-11. Signifi- cantly, in this Song of Moses God's shepherding of Israel through the wil- derness by the theophanic cloud is depicted in the distinctive language of Gen 1:2: as a birdlike hovering (rähap) over the unstructured world (töhu).1 Bird imagery suggested itself naturally for this Glory theophany. First, it was a cloud formation, and clouds and birds belong to the same sphere of the sky, across which they fly. Isaiah parallels the two: "Who are these that fly as a cloud and as doves to their windows?" (Isa 60:8). -

In recent years, this has been strongly advocated by Meredith Kline and others influenced by his views. In this article I will ask some historical and theological questions of the claim. I will also consider how far Reformed theology, particularly in the period up to the production of the major confessional documents of the Westminster Assembly (1643-47), was of one mind on the question. 2 I will concentrate on the argument itself, without undue reference to persons.3 1. The school’s roots are found in two institutions which have long provided evangelical leadership for the Christian church in a variety of ministries. The Conwell School of Theology was founded in Philadelphia in 1884 by the Rev. Russell Conwell, a prominent Baptist minister. In 1889, out of a desire to equip “men and women in practical religious work... and to furnish them with a thoroughly biblical training,” the Boston Missionary Training School was founded by another prominent Baptist minister, the Rev. BOOK REVIEW by W. G. Crampton, Th.D. THE ESCONDIDO THEOLOGY A Reformed Response to Two Kingdom Theology by John Frame ohn M. Frame is a well-known Reformed theologian who currently holds the J. D. Trimble Chair of Systematic Theology and Philosophy at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida. J Earlier he served on the faculty of Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he was one of the founding faculty members of Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, California. Dr. Frame is the author of well over a dozen books, including his highly respected The Lordship Series. He has also written numerous articles, essays, and book reviews. He is perhaps best known as a staunch supporter of the presuppositional approach to apologetics taught by Cornelius Van Til. The present reviewer has critiqued some of Dr. Frame’s writings on other occasions,1 but here there is much positive to be said. The Escondido Theology2 was written by Professor Frame to overview some of the errant teachings coming forth from the California seminary at which he once taught. Being a founding faculty member at this seminary, he is well equipped to do so. Following an Introduction by George Grant (7-14), a Foreword by Gary DeMar (15-28), a Review by Andrew Sandlin (29-33), and a Publisher’s Preface by Kenneth Talbot (35-36), we have the Author’s Preface (37-44) followed by eleven chapters. In his preface Professor Frame tells us what this book is about: “This book is a critical analysis of a theological movement that I call ‘The Escondido Theology.’” The members of this school of thought “are representatives of the orthodox Reformed theological tradition. -

A Review Article of Inspiration and Incarnation by Peter Enns
JETS 49/2 (June 2006) 287–312 REVIEW ARTICLE MYTH, HISTORY, AND INSPIRATION: A REVIEW ARTICLE OF INSPIRATION AND INCARNATION BY PETER ENNS g. k. beale* i. introduction Peter Enns has written a stimulating book on the doctrine of Scripture, which likely will become controversial.1 Scholars and students alike should be grateful that Enns has boldly ventured to set before his evangelical peers a view of inspiration and hermeneutics that has not traditionally been held by evangelical scholarship. After his introduction, in chapter 2 he discusses the parallels between ancient Near Eastern myths and accounts in the OT. He says that the OT contains what he defines as “myth” (on which see his definition later below), but, he affirms, this should not have a negative bearing on the OT’s divine inspiration. God accommodates himself to communicate his truth through such mythological biblical accounts. Chapter 3 discusses what Enns calls “di- versity” in the OT. He believes that the kinds of diversity that he attempts to analyze have posed problems in the past for the doctrine of “inerrancy.” He asserts that this “diversity” must be acknowledged, even though it poses tensions with the inspiration of Scripture. This diversity is part of God’s in- spired word. In chapter 4, Enns shifts to the topic of how the OT is interpreted by NT writers. He contends that Second Temple Judaism was not concerned to interpret the OT according to an author’s intention nor to interpret it con- textually nor according to modern standards of “grammatical-historical exe- gesis.” This hermeneutical context of Judaism must be seen as the socially constructed framework of the NT writers’ approach to interpreting the OT, so that they also were not concerned to interpret the OT contextually. -

Busenitz Vice President for Academic Administration Professor of Bible and Old Testament The prominence of the OT covenants throughout the Bible makes various facets of information about them—the etymology of the OT term, the OT and NT usages of relevant terms, covenant phraseologies, pledges, signs, witnesses, consequences, conditionality, and the number of covenants—matters of deepest interest to students of the Bible. The six covenants that provide a foundation for understanding God’s working in human history are the Noahic, the Abrahamic, the Priestly, the Mosaic, the Davidic, and the New covenants. The Noahic Covenant came at the time of the great flood when God promised Noah, his family, and all mankind subsequent to them that He would never destroy the world with a flood again and gave a sign of the rainbow to remind Himself of His promise. God made the Priestly Covenant with Phinehas when Phinehas executed an Israelite man and a Moabite woman who were in process of consummating marriage with one another. He made it clear that this covenant like the other unconditional covenants was to be perpetual too. * * * * * INTRODUCTION Covenants play a prominent role in OT life—socially, politically, and religiously. The covenant idea itself, first mentioned in Genesis 6 during the days of Noah, is intricately woven into the fabric of the biblical account all the way through to Revelation 11 where the “ark of His covenant” reappears in the temple. The word itself occurs in 27 of 39 OT books and in 11 of 27 NT books. -
