We were very pleased with the number of visitors this year – both Friday evening and Saturday seemed busier than usual. Also, the quality of items was good too – I heard a number of people comment on this. But most of all we need to thank the volunteers, some of whom had virtually moved into the Scout Hut ten days prior to the event to sort items. This is a massive project, but one that makes quite a substantal amount of money that will be split between the partcipatng groups. Even though the sale generates a couple of vanloads of rubbish that goes to the tp, a lot is recycled to a list of charites that all beneft. One van of recycled items is collected afer the event by a professional company who then send us a cheque in exchange. Julia Bebington, BCA Organiser

This September, the BCA was again host to visitors from China interested to learn about the role played by our community in maintaining the quality of the village environment and our social and cultural life. The 30 guests were from the Overseas China Towns Group (OCTG), a development company that builds new town communites all over China. The visit began at the OSO with a welcome from BCA Chairman Steven Mindel and a briefng from Town Centre Manager Emma Robinson. The group then walked through Barnes Green, along the High Street and Church Road, and fnished with a look at the Wetland Centre. The group was impressed by the variety and quality of the work of the BCA and the breadth of facilites and amenites in Barnes. Brewery concerns The planning applicaton for redevelopment of Mortlake Brewery, expected in September, has been further delayed untl the end of the year. In the meantme, there is a public hearing into the council’s update of the Borough Local Plan, which shows the redevelopment to include ‘provision of a new 6-form entry secondary school’ and ‘re-provision of the playing felds’. This has resulted in the developer’s plan showing the school built on the playing felds plus a mega housing development in place of the brewery itself. Access of the congested Lower Richmond Road is going to be a problem and Network Rail has just announced that the Sheen Lane level crossing is already at ‘high risk’.
