The Director General, National Environmental www.sadili.com • [email protected] Management Authority, Dr. A. Mwinzi The league aims at bringing together the global community in supporting the needs of 1200 children and youth in Nairobi-Kenya, East Africa. This event says “NO” to anger and ethnic violence and war that has wrecked the lives of many in our region, and more recently, during the post-election period in Kibera in our constituency of Lang’ata. We aimed to build bridges across communities: understanding that we are one world, irrespective of color, race, ethnicity, income level and religion by: a) Goals for Peace: Availed opportunity for local children to interact through a comprehensive soccer league. This provided an opportunity for children to talk about their experiences and begin the healing process through play and teamwork. A total of 108 teams registered for the soccer league, and more than 2200 children and their teachers attended the league, staying on even after they had lost, to share in the excitement and fun. b) We ensured that every child had a meal and training every weekend from May to July 2008, while the league was still running. c) We initiated peer discussions, encouraging young people to say “NO” to activities amongst the youth that lead to contracting HIV infection through Reproductive Health and Life Skills Workshops. Africa has the highest rate of infection in the world, and the most affected are the youth. d) Trees for Peace - Children were involved in a 4000 tree- planting campaign together with the local community and the politicians during the rains in May and June. This activity formed part of the Million Tree Campaign of UNEP. The number of trees planted far exceeded the target, with 7415 trees being the count by late July 2008. The campaign shall continue up to the end of 2008, and more organizations & schools will be expected to take part. e) In order to ensure more participation from girls, the IOC has also donated equipment to begin a girls Netball for Peace league that will run in September and October this year, together with the Trees for Peace.
