Dear Parents

PARENTS’ NEWSLETTER – ISSUE 4 NOVEMBER 2009

INTRODUCTION As most of you will be aware, one of our school buses, the B8 that serves Sparcells and Peatmoor, was involved in an accident with a tractor on Monday 16 November 2009. Fortunately the injuries were not as serious as they could have been. Three Year 8 girls were taken to hospital, two were discharged that evening returning to school the next day. The third Year 8 girl had a dislocated shoulder and needed surgery to remove glass from her hand. Difficult situations such as this can bring out the best in a community. I would like to thank all staff, the emergency services, parents and students for their support, kindness and consideration during a very difficult 48 hours for the B8 students, their families and the Bradon Forest community. (The letter to parents/press release that we produced has been put on the school website www.bradonforest.wilts.sch.uk under the newsletter section as Parents’ Newsletter Issue 3A.)

BRADON FOREST STUDENT, PARENT AND STAFF SURVEYS As a school we regularly run a number of surveys and questionnaires each year on a variety of specific issues. However, it is five years since we ran a whole school survey for parents, students and staff. Earlier this week, questionnaires were distributed to all students, parents and staff. Your son/daughter would have brought home an envelope containing the parental questionnaire with a white return envelope. The student questionnaires contain a brown return envelope. When you have completed your parental questionnaire, please put the form in the white envelope, seal it, and your child should hand these in to his/her tutor. Students have a similar system for the collection of their brown envelopes. All the sealed envelopes (parents, students and staff) will be sent, unopened, to the survey company who will process all the returns and produce a detailed school report. This will be valuable to enhance the future development of our school. To ensure the results are significant we are hoping for as large a return rate as possible. The original return date for your envelope was Monday 23 November 2009. Due to the newsletter being a little late because of events earlier this week, we have extended this to Wednesday 25 November 2009. I would like to thank all parents, students and staff for their cooperation in completing this whole school survey.

UPDATE: STUDENT PERFORMANCE REVIEW DAY (PRD) – THURSDAY 26 NOVEMBER 2009 Our first Performance Review Day of this academic year takes place on Thursday 26 November 2009 when our timetable and lessons are suspended so that the day can be devoted to academic mentoring and target- setting with students and parents. It is expected that all students will remain home on this day and will work on material that their teachers will have set in advance. Students will, however, come to school with their parents to attend pre-arranged Performance Review meetings with their tutor or an associated Learning Manager. Individualised letters from Mr Bond and Mrs Chappell (Assistant Headteachers) have been sent home to all parents regarding arrangements for the November PRD, including details on making appointments. If there are any queries please contact either Mr Bond or Mrs Chappell NB: Reminder/information for new parents: PRD appointments do not replace our parent/subject teacher evenings, which are all scheduled on the parents’ calendar.

PE NEWS Netball Trip To Spain

Over the half term break, Mrs Evans, with the support of Mrs Davies and Mrs Brett- Harris, took a large group of students to a Netball Competition in Barcelona, Spain. There were two squads, the Under 14s and the Under 16s. The Under 14s were fourth overall in their group and were winners of the shooting competition. Charlotte Densham (9Q) was voted overall best player in the Under 14s. There were two Under 16 Bradon Forest teams. The A team, captained by Alexandra Lee (11S), were winners of the tournament, and their success included beating two Under 19 teams in the group. The B team was third in its group. The Under 16s were winners of the shooting competition, Charlotte Legge (10Y) was voted overall best player in the Under 16s and Gemma Showler (10W) was voted overall best shooter in the Under 16s. Mrs Evans and her colleagues were particularly pleased with the behaviour, sportsmanship and effort which all the girls put into the tournament and the trip in general. Bradon Forest students were the winners of the quiz and also the winners of the best mascot competition – a three foot inflatable piranha! Mrs Evans gave reports on the trip in assemblies and gave the girls the recognition they thoroughly deserve. Many thanks to the staff that organised and supervised this trip – the students and staff were a credit to Bradon Forest School. I have reproduced below a letter that I received last week from the Managing Director, Nigel Parker, of the travel company – the letter speaks for itself.

Dear Mr Spiers

I am writing to you and the School Governors following the recent Netball Festival your school took part in with Pinnacle Travel to Spain. We are delighted to report that we have received extremely positive feedback from our travel representatives and resort staff about the good behaviour, positive attitude and application of students in the team. They were superb ambassadors for your school’s reputation, both here in the UK and overseas.

Additionally, I am pleased to report that the organisation and professional manner demonstrated by Sarah Evans and her team whilst on tour with us was a credit to your school. In the current climate it is rewarding to know that you have dedicated staff who are committed to school travel. Please pass on my thanks and congratulations to the whole Netball Team and we look forward to being of service to you in the future.

Wiltshire Schools Netball Tournament Bradon Forest School was the only comprehensive school with two teams going through to the Wiltshire Schools Netball Tournament which took place at Dauntsey's School in Lavington on Sunday 15 November 2009. Luckily, the weather stayed dry and bright as the U16s started their tournament with a convincing win over defeating them 9-2 in the first round. The U14s, with Olivia Longstaff in a new position as goalkeeper, also started strongly beating School 6-1. The second round saw the U16s defeating South Wilts Grammar School 7-4, whereas the U14s just lost to 5-6. A minute longer and the score line would have surely been in Bradon Forest's favour. The third round saw the U16s against a team who everyone thought would be the toughest competition - . However, the girls played fantastically well, supporting each throughout the court, leaving Marlborough standing still - winning with a huge margin of 12 goals to 1! The U14s were unlucky again in their next match, losing to the eventual U14 tournament winners by 5 goals to 6. After winning their group, the U16s went through into the semi-finals where they met St Mary's School. The girls showed flair, control and some inspiring netball to win 9-3 and secured their place in the final! Meanwhile, the U14s were then playing for fifth or sixth place against local rivals - some patient and controlled play from the entire team allowed them to win 7 goals to 5 and to finish fifth place - a worthy effort for the youngsters. The U16s had to wait a while to see who they would come up against in the final, as Marlborough and Godolphin went into extra time during their semi-final clash. Godolphin were the eventual winners of their semi-final and the stage was set for the final! It was decided that all squad members would play in the final and this paid off as every player worked hard for the team and supported each other throughout. The final score of 10-5 to Bradon Forest was a testament to the hard work, skill, team work and sheer determination from a squad of very talented netballers! The girls were presented with their medals and certificates and now go through to represent Wiltshire at the South West stage of this national tournament. A fantastic effort from all of the Bradon Forest girls.

PARIS MUSIC TRIP Miss Clements Head of Music reports: “After a long coach journey from Bradon Forest School to Paris, the Music Tour arrived a little dishevelled and tired at our base in Paris – a modern glass fronted school in the suburbs called Campus Sainte Therese. We were led straight down to dinner which we gratefully ate before unpacking the coach and getting settled. We were located in en-suite rooms on the top floor of the school – luckily there was a lift! After a good sleep, we awoke to blue skies and a delicious French breakfast of good coffee, French bread and cereal. We then started our Paris adventure. Our first trip was to the Eiffel Tower which most students wanted to climb. Miss Clements and the tour guide, Phil, took one student for a tour around the big city instead of climbing the tower – Miss Clements was secretly quite pleased she didn’t have to face her fear of heights in front of everyone! Miss Groom, Miss Colbert and Mr Hutchings took the students to the top of the tower and then back down again before heading off for our first concert. We arrived at a hospital for a lunchtime performance which was gratefully received. Despite it being a very hot room and not having any time to practise, the Choir and Concert Band did a very good job and were rewarded with biscuits and juice. On the second day of our visit we went to the Notre Dame. Here students were informed about the history of the building and the architecture. We then journeyed back to the school where we enjoyed a dinner and some entertainment – the students formed teams and had to dress up as characters such as Superman and the Hunchback of Notre Dame. The staff marked the students on originality, accuracy and speed of changing. It was a brilliant evening which we all thoroughly enjoyed!! The following day, Monday, was another fun-filled journey into Paris. We started with a boat trip looking at the important sights of the city followed by an opportunity to go shopping on the Champs Elysees before we moved onto the next part of our day – Montmartre and the Sacre Coeur. We spent a few hours looking around Montmartre and buying souvenirs and watched some live performances by musicians and dancers on the steps of the Sacre Coeur whilst the sun set over Paris. We then ambled our way down to Restaurant Chez Gigi for dinner – the food was delicious especially the dessert of fresh strawberry ice-cream which we all decided was exceptional. It was soon our last day in Paris and we got ready to go to Disneyland – a day of frights and delights was had by all! Reluctantly we packed before having a final evening in the canteen back at base – the students created short performances inspired by Disney, with the winners receiving cups and medals (thanks to Miss Colbert for those). A special mention goes to the Year 10 students for their poem written by Rosie Robinson. We also celebrated Lucy Johnson’s 16 th birthday and Frances Oakland’s 14 th birthday with a delicious Black Forest gateau and a good rendition of “Happy Birthday”. All declared the trip brilliant with lots of thanks to our driver Steve, tour guide Phil, and the staff. Also, a big thank you to everyone for being fantastic Bradon Forest students and being delightful to be away with.”

INDIA ‘CONNECTING CLASSROOMS’ TRIP Mrs Shelley, Deputy Head of Humanities and RS Subject Leader reports: “During the October break, Deborah Shelley travelled to northern India along with six teachers from Wiltshire schools. The visit was funded by the British Council, as part of their Connecting Classrooms initiative. The group visited a number of secondary schools which are government funded, selective boarding schools, targeting young people with ability from the rural areas of northern India. The welcome and response from students and teachers was superb, and plans are now underway to set up an India group, centred on Year 10 Bradon Forest students, who will work on joint projects with , in Bradford-on-Avon, and our link school in India. Further details will be available soon; this will be a unique opportunity for Bradon Forest students to work with students from other schools, exploring another culture and hopefully becoming involved in a visit in 2011.”

INTERNATIONAL: DCSF INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AWARD As reported in October 2008 we were awarded the Full International Award from the British Council in recognition of the strength and depth of International work across the curriculum. It is very pleasing that the excellent work of colleagues and students is recognised by this national quality mark. As reported over the last year the success of this very valuable whole school initiative led by Ms Hunter (Assistant Headteacher) is due to the support of staff and students across all curriculum areas. Last week we received the following letter from The British Council: Extract from a letter from British Council: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your help and support with the DCSF ISA Awards over the last 10 years. All of us here in the ISA team wish you the very best with your international work and congratulations on your excellent achievements so far. We would encourage you to use this DCSF ISA logo to highlight your excellent commitment to the Award and to keep involved in a range of international opportunities. Many thanks and all the best for the future! “

FOOD TECHNOLOGY NEWS As reported in the last issue, on our recent Flexi-Day the Food team organised Bradon Forest heats for several national competitions and it was pleasing to report on the school results in three competitions. i) Future Chef was won by Bethan Williams who served a Zesty Lemon Risotto in the school round. The following is a press release from Future Chef: FUTURECHEF 2010 SCHOOL HEAT RESULTS Can They Cook It? FutureChef 2010 Hots Up! All over the country young aspiring cooks have been taking part in the school heats of Springboard’s FutureChef 2010, the four-stage nationwide culinary programme aimed at helping young people aged 12 - 16 to learn to cook. At Bradon Forest School, Year 10 Food students cooked up a variety of mouth-watering dishes with 14 year old Bethan Williams beating off strong opposition to win through to the next round with her dish of Chicken, Chorizo and Lemon Fisotto). Gillian Woodward, in charge of Food Technology from Bradon Forest School, said “Bethan produced a fanatic risotto, with a creamy texture and fresh tangy flavours. The judges ate the whole portion!” Commenting on Bethan Williams’s success, Springboard Regional Coordinator Ralph Pitts said “The FutureChef programme helps develop an interest in food and cooking as a life skill for young people, and also provides teachers and young people alike with a wonderful insight into what it’s like to be a chef.” 2010 is FutureChef’s 10 th birthday year, and the programme continues to grow with a record number of schools, participants and chefs involved. This year over 700 schools from throughout the UK are participating in FutureChef with thousands of young people involved in the programme. Watch out for Bethan Williams who, with the help of mentor Francis Young of The Pear Tree, , will be preparing a delicious two course menu when she takes part in the local heat stage of the programme at , Trowbridge on 23 November 2009. ii) Meat Marketing Board Competition: Jenna Duckers won the school round of the Meat Marketing Board cooking competition. Jenna produced an original idea of a Bolognese Stuffed Crust Pizza with a seasonal salad. She now progresses to the regional round which will be attended by Celebrity Chef, James Martin. iii) British Food Week Competition: Lauren Stone and Nathan Hiles are being mentored by Francis Young of the Peartree in Purton in preparation for the regional round of this competition. I am sure everyone would like to wish the best of luck to Bethan, Jenna, Lauren and Nathan in the next rounds of their respective competitions.

MATHEMATICS NEWS i) Mathematics Parents’ Evening Miss James reports: At the Year 7 Mathematics Workshop Evening over 60 parents attended and the evening was very useful and a real success. Many thanks to all involved. I have copied a message that I received from one of the parents the morning afterwards, which shows how valuable this evening is to our new parents: “Thank you very much for the maths evening last night. I found it interesting and informative and have a clearer understanding of how my child is taught maths. I am delighted with the two online maths websites you are using, they look great. At the moment we can only use the Mymaths as my child doesn’t have the password for the Mathletics yet, and we shall take full advantage of the website over the holidays. Once again, many thanks for your hard work and a very interesting evening.” ii) NRICH As part of an exercise in problem solving and explaining solutions, Miss Harker’s Year 8 Mathematics Set attempted solving some problems from a mathematics website called NRICH. Miss Harker reports: “This website publishes problems based around a specific topic every month and asks students to send them their solutions. Not all the correct replies they receive are published and so I was extremely pleased to see that not only was Bradon Forest named as a school from which they had received several good solutions, but that six of our students had their solutions published on the site. Problem solving is a skill that can be difficult to master, but being able to explain how you reached your solution in a clear way can be extremely difficult. I am very proud of the following students for the hard work they put in to get their work recognised by NRICH: Emma Hobbs, Joseph Pettit, Adam Bradley, Robert Mills, Hannah Curtis and Georgia Forde. Well done all of you!”

EXPRESSIVE ARTS NEWS ‘Question Time with Macbeth’ On Friday 13 November 2009, Brook Field School were treated to a visit from Macbeth! The two Year 6 classes have been studying the favourite Shakespeare play for a few weeks and were glad of the chance to find out a little bit more about the leading man. David Calder, Head of Expressive Arts/Drama, was asked by Brook Field if he could help out with the question time session and he was only to happy to assist. David has been into local primary schools in a similar vein in the past, but more often than not, the pupils recognise him. This time there was not a murmur from the pupils as they entered the library to see Macbeth, towering over them in full costume, hired from none other than the Royal Shakespeare Company and complete with crown and sword. Important questions such as, “Why did you do everything Lady Macbeth told you to?” and “Who was left to be your best friend after everything that you'd done?” were asked by the inquisitive pupils. Staying strictly in character throughout the entire session, pupils were mesmerised by the intimidating character and only the brave asked the more prying questions, such as “Do you think murdering Banquo was a cowardly act? ” Jo Cook, Year 6 teacher at Brook Field said: "Often we pay a lot to education drama companies, but this was just as good as those we have had in the past. The children were transfixed! Great answers to the questions allowed the children to see another side of the character."

HUMANITIES NEWS : Year 8 Living Rainforest trips. Miss Cole, Head of Humanities, reports: “ Students in Year 8 visited ‘The Living Rainforest’ in Newbury before the October break, to learn about ‘Amazing Adaptations’, as part of our unit on Extreme Environments. They found out about how plants and animals adapt to the rainforest environment in order to survive: from Pitcher Plants, which digest small insects using acid inside a jug shaped flower head, to hissing beetles, to pythons who can expand their head to swallow their prey! Students worked very well during the day and their tour guides were impressed by their level of knowledge about rainforests. Staff involved would like to thank students and parents for supporting this visit so enthusiastically.”

GLOBAL ENTERPRISE DAY: “Make Your Mark” Challenge 2009 Seven teams of Year 9 students recently opted to take part in the “Make Your Mark” Challenge 2009. The challenge was to come up with a new and innovative business idea that takes its inspiration from something local. The business idea could be a product or service “as long as it’s a ‘cool’ creation and makes money”. We ran the challenge in ‘Dragons Den’ style, with the ‘Dragons’ being Year 11 Business Studies students. The Year 9 students rose to the challenge extremely well and competition was fierce. After much deliberation, the winning team was Team E with their product Green-Eaze Stationery (that saves the world!). Well done to all of the teams who took part, they put in a lot of hard work and had some great ideas.

CHARITY NEWS: Charity Balloon Release Bradon Forest Year 10 student, Charlotte Quinn, together with the help of Mathematics teacher Miss Harker, organised a mass balloon release in aid of the Breast Cancer Research and Jeans for Genes charities. Charlotte proposed her idea to her tutor, Miss Harker, who was more than happy to help with the project. The pair had been organising the event, which took place on Friday 23 October 2009, for about a month with the assistance of some other keen students. After a week of special assemblies, led by Charlotte, balloons were sold during break and lunchtimes for students to write their own messages to loved ones or messages of hopes for the future. The balloons all sold out within a couple of days and more stock had to be bought in. Miss Harker's daughter, Amelie, who has a genetic condition called Turners Syndrome, was also there to support the main event. Over 110 balloons were released and with the help of Fifi badge sales, the event made over £200 for the charities. It must be very daunting for a student to address the whole school as Charlotte did during the assemblies, but she was very passionate about the project and wanted to get as many people on board as possible. Miss Harker said: "The balloon release was a tremendous success thanks to the hard work and dedication from the volunteers in Year 7 and Year 10, particularly Charlotte Quinn. I'm very proud of the students at Bradon Forest for their efforts so far in raising money for these key charities."

REMINDER FROM PREVIOUS NEWSLETTER: CLOSURE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM Over the last few years this newsletter reminder about our closure system started with a comment about a mild autumn that might be followed by a hard winter. Unfortunately last year this proved to be the case as the second half of last winter was particularly bad as regards conditions resulting in some school closures. With this in mind we would like to reiterate our procedures for closing the school in the event of bad weather or other circumstances outside of our control. Our aim is to give students, parents and staff as much notice as possible. Often the weather forecast is not always reliable and bad weather overnight may lead to a decision to close the school early in the morning. We will always keep the school open whilst it is safe to do so. However, in access difficulties, power cuts, heating failure or in the case of an overwhelming staff shortage, we may have to take the decision to close. If we do have to close the school we will use the following means to alert the school community:

The school website will carry a clear dated message on the homepage stating that we are closed (www.bradonforest.wilts.sch.uk).

Local radio stations will be informed and should broadcast details of school closures throughout the day. These include Heart Radio on 97.2 or 102.2, BBC Radio Wiltshire on 103.5, 103.6, 104.3 or 104.9 and Brunel Radio on 107.7. If the weather or other circumstances lead you to think that the school is closed, please use the website or radio to check whether we are open or not. Please do not ring the school switchboard as this can overwhelm the system when we need to contact staff, bus companies, the media, local authorities, etc. Thank you in advance for your co-operation – hopefully there will be no need to use this system this winter.

SCHOOL UNIFORM School uniform is an important expression of membership of the Bradon Forest Community. All students should be clearly recognised as members of their school, visually representing Bradon Forest to the very high standards they achieve in all other areas of school life. Every year we provide the detailed school uniform list with our July Parents’ Newsletter in the Parents’ Reference Section. We have reproduced the main section of this list on school uniform at the end of this newsletter as a minority of students may be misrepresenting the current uniform policy. A recent example has been that of shoes. If you have any queries or concerns about school uniform please contact either your child’s tutor or his/her Head of Year in the first instance. Thank you for your continuing support for the school uniform policy If any family has problems in providing the correct uniform, they should contact the relevant Head of Key Stage and this will be dealt with in strict confidence. (We are also pleased to be part of a local scheme for a company that resells good quality second hand school uniform – please see the following article.)

UNIFORM RE-SALES We are now working with Logo-Motif, a company based in Cheney Manor that sells good quality, used school uniform from a number of schools in Swindon/North Wiltshire. Logo-Motif are happy for you to visit them at their premises (Unit 649, BSS House, Cheney Manor, Swindon, SN2 2 PJ) to bring along any items of your children’s Bradon Forest School uniform which they will sell on your behalf . They already have a number of Bradon Forest school uniform items in stock for purchase. For more information you can visit their website www.logo-motif.com or ring them on 01793 434050.

PARENTS’ NEWSLETTERS To maintain a regular flow of information to parents, the Parents’ Newsletter is published on a regular basis. The newsletters will contain information celebrating the numerous achievements of students, the usual day- to-day information, advance notices and reminders you would normally expect. It is important with secondary age students to create a system that maximises the chance of newsletters arriving home to parents. The newsletters for this academic year will be published in the week beginning: Issue 5 - 7 December 2009 Issue 9 - 3 May 2010 Issue 6 - 11 January 2010 Issue 10 - 14 June 2010 Issue 7 - 8 February 2010 Issue 11 - 12 July 2010 Issue 8 - 29 March 2010

REMINDERS: PARENTS’ CALENDAR 2009/10 The 2009/10 Parents’ Calendar is now available on the school website www.bradonforest.wilts.sch.uk via the “Welcome to Bradon Forest School” information button. This is updated every Friday and the version date is shown on the top right hand side. Any changes to the calendar are highlighted in red. We will continue to publish any changes to the calendar via the newsletter, but the website copy will provide the most up to date information for parents to check.

ACADEMIC YEAR DATES 2009/10 The dates for this academic year have been published in previous newsletters but are reproduced at the end of each newsletter issue for reference to ensure that ‘end of term’ closures and all our Teacher Development Days when the school is closed to students are regularly highlighted to students and parents.
