Kirkby Wharfe SSSI County: North Yorkshire Site Name: Kirkby Wharfe Status: Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) notified under Section 28 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. Local Planning Authority: Selby District Council National Grid Reference: SE 510400 Ordnance Survey Sheets 1:50,000: 105 1:10,000: SE 53 NW, 54 SW Area: 21.7 (ha) 53.7 (ac) First Notified: 1984 Description: Kirkby Wharfe is an area of floodland in the valley of Dorts Dike, a tributary of the River Wharfe. Low-lying land adjacent to the dyke supports a rich marshland flora, which is in part hay cropped and in part cattle-grazed and at the higher margins there is drier neutral grassland. The site also contains an osier bed which is still in active production. The marshland communities are dominated either by sedges and rushes, typically common sedge Carex nigra, brown sedge C. disticha, jointed rush Juncus articulatus and hard rush J. inflexus, or by grasses such as reed sweet-grass Glyceria maxima and reed canary-grass Phalaris arundinacea. Both are herb-rich with an abundance of meadowsweet Filipendula ulmaria and creeping buttercup Ranunculus repens, as well as a number of other species such as marsh marigold Caltha palustris, tubular water-dropwort Oenanthe fistulosa, water horsetail Equisetum fluviatile and common marsh bedstraw Galium palustre. The osier bed has a rich ground flora dominated by meadowsweet, and also contains great willowherb Epilobium hirsutum, yellow iris Iris pseudacorus and common meadow-rue Thalictrum flavum. Areas of drier neutral grassland at the margin of the floodland are dominated by red fescue Festuca rubra with herbs such as great burnet Sanguisorba officinalis, salad burnet S. minor, cowslip Primula veris and cow parsley Anthriscus sylvestris. The site is one of a very few remaining sedge and rush dominated marshland communities in the Vale of York, others being found at Upper Dunsforth and Farnham Mires. Other Information: 1. This is a new site. 2. See also Upper Dunsforth and Farnham Mires..

  • Selby District Historic Designed Landscapes Project Grimston Park
YORKSHIRE GARDENS TRUST Selby District Historic Designed Landscapes Project Grimston Park Report by Gil Firth, Yvonne Boutwood and Chris Fenge [June 2018] With many thanks to John Fielden and Richard Best for help received and use of their archives in this research on Grimston Park. 1. CORE DATA 1.1 Name of site: Grimston Park 1.2 Grid reference: SE 496 410 1.3 Administrative area: Grimston Civil Parish, Selby District, North Yorkshire County (modern), West Riding of Yorkshire County (historic) 1.4 Current site designation: Not on the Historic England Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England 2. SUMMARY OF HISTORIC INTEREST Grimston Park lies west of the village of Kirkby Wharfe about 2 miles south of Tadcaster on the A162 (Figure 1). Its house and garden are an important example of the Italianate style of architecture and landscape design that was popular in the mid 19th century. The 2nd Lord Howden commissioned Decimus Burton c.1840 to rebuild Grimston House, formerly designed by John Carr. He engaged William Andrews Nesfield to design the gardens c.1843, creating his trademark terrace parterre and sunken rose garden. The gardens and extensive pleasure grounds surrounding the mansion house were intersected by walks and embellished with marble statuary and contained the possibly unique ‘Emperors’ Walk’. The landscaped park, with extensive river frontage, was probably developed in the 1 late eighteenth century in a naturalistic style and noted for its sylvan scenery. Its setting was later enhanced by an observatory tower, also designed by Decimus Burton in ornate Egyptian style, creating an eyecatcher, from which there are extensive views across the landscape.

Selby District Core Strategy Local Plan Adoption Version 22 October 2013 Copies of the accompanying evidence base including the Sustainability Appraisal Report and Background Papers can also be viewed on our website You may get further help from the Policy Team at: Selby District Council, Doncaster Road, Selby YO8 9FT [email protected] 01757 292034 01757 292229 If you require any further help or advice or if you need this document in a different format, for example large print, audio, Braille or in another language, please contact the Policy Team on (01757) 292034 or email [email protected] The Status of Regional Strategy (RS) and the Implications of the Localism Act 2011 At the time of ‘Publication’ of the Submission Draft Core Strategy (SDCS), the Development Plan for Selby District comprised the Regional Spatial Strategy (the Yorkshire and Humber Plan or RS), and ‘Saved’ Local Plan policies, namely Selby District Local Plan, North Yorkshire Minerals Local Plan and North Yorkshire Waste Local Plan. The Core Strategy is the first development plan document prepared by the Council as part of its new Local Development Framework (Local Plan). On adoption it replaces a number of the ‘Saved’ Selby District Local Plan policies1. On 6 July 2010 the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government announced the revocation of RS with immediate effect. As a result of the Secretary of State’s revocation decision, the Council reviewed the Core Strategy and the evidence base on which it is founded, and came to the conclusion that while the policies and context provided by RS were no longer applicable, the RS evidence base remains robust and relevant, particularly since the RS evidence had been subject to a process of consultation and Examination.

  • 1.60 the Proposed 3 Councillor Ward of Tadcaster
Projected Electorate Number of +/‐ Ward Name in 2018 Councillors Variance Fit with LGBCE Criteria 1 Tadcaster 6733 3 ‐1.60 The proposed 3 Councillor ward of Tadcaster comprises the existing Tadcaster East and Tadcaster West wards previously served by 2 Councillors each plus the Parish of Healaugh. It achieves an excellent degree of electoral equality. The ward brings together the settlements to the far north east of the District that have strong community, transport (road and bus networks) and educational links with the market town of Tadcaster. Served by 3 District Councillors the new ward will provide for efficient and effective local government and will form a core part of the area’s Community Engagement Forum. 2 Church Fenton 2119 1 ‐7.09 Church Fenton and Ulleskelf comprises the parishes of Church Fenton, Little Fenton, Ulleskelf and Biggin and Ulleskelf all lying south west of the River Wharfe. It achieves a reasonable degree of electoral equality The main settlements are served by local transport connections including the 491, 492, 493 and 494 bus routes. They also sit within the catchment area of the Kirk Fenton Primary School at Church Fenton. Served by a single District Councillor the new ward will provide for efficient and effective local government. As it comprises just four local parish councils the ward is unlikely to generate unreasonable workload issues. 3 Appleton Roebuck 2388 1 4.70 The proposed single Councillor ward of Appleton Roebuck presented the greatest challenge in balancing the criteria of electoral equality, community identity and effective and efficient local government. These proposals represent the most appropriate compromise.
