Sounds of Shalom Concert Series Music. Has. Power. It is transcendent, transformative, a gift from God. It has the power to move…to connect…to heal. As cantor here at Temple Shalom, my vision is to bring beautiful, uplifting, life-changing music into our walls. The Sounds of Shalom Concert Series is an idea I’ve been hoping to materialize for a number of years. About five months ago, I was sitting at lunch with the co-chairs of the Music Committee, Jim Waldorf and Aric Stock, and told them this idea. Within the course of our lunch, we mapped out the entire series, whom we would have perform, and how we would do it. Last month we had an incredible concert with Yuri Anshelevich. The energy in the room was electric with the steady, beautiful rhythm of Yuri’s playing. You could have heard a pin drop in our chapel. Those who were there said that the concert was breathtaking. It was truly a remarkable and memorable evening. As many of you already know, our concert series continues on August 11, 2019 with Alissa Roca, our astounding Soprano Soloist for the High Holy Days, in a concert titled, “To My Friends With Love.” I believe Alissa will be one of the next great Sopranos of our time. We are uniquely lucky to have a woman of her talent grace the halls of Temple Shalom. Her musicality and vocal technique are unparalleled. Do not miss this concert. If you’d like to learn a little bit more about Alissa and hear recordings of her music, you can check out her website here: http://www.alissaroca.com/ Our 2019 series ends on November 10th, in a concert with me, entitled “For the Love of God”, a concert that tells, through music, the love story between the Jewish People and God. I’m so excited to share this concert with Temple Shalom. I’ve been planning it for the last several of months and I believe it will be a night to remember. There will be songs in Yiddish, English, and Hebrew, spanning many genres from Classical to Yiddish Theater, Jewish Folk to 70’s Pop. Tickets to these concerts are $18 each online or $20 at the door. You can purchase them at: https://soundsofshalom.ticketbud.com/aug11 Thank you so much to Jim Waldorf and Aric Stock, our Music Committee co-chairs for helping to birth this event for Temple Shalom and making this concert series a reality. Additionally, I want to thank Jim Waldorf in particular, because he’s really been the chair of this event. Jim, thank you for your dedication and all your hard work. We couldn’t have done this without you. Thank you as well to the whole Music Committee for your help making this concert series a reality. See you all on August 11th! Cantor Devorah Avery

President’s Column by Rodney Schlosser Dear Fellow Congregants: August is the most popular month for unaffiliated folks to evaluate and join a synagogue. We phone calls and drop-ins from people new to the area, considering switching synagogues, or wanting to enroll their kids in religious school. We know from talking with last year’s new members that one of our attractions is our welcoming vibe…among the members, the clergy, and staff. We have a special community that is both inclusive and diverse. You, your spouse or your kids know of people from work, school, the neighborhood or the gym… who would enjoy the social, spiritual, or educational programs at Temple Shalom. Let us know who they are, so we can invite them to a program, send them a brochure, or have the clergy give them a call. There are 5 special reasons why now is an especially good time to invite someone you know to consider becoming a part of our community:

1. New members enjoy a special first-year dues offer (just as you may have enjoyed when you first joined). 2. Every member who refers someone who becomes a new member will be thanked with a $50 Central Market gift card. This is being funded by an anonymous donor, and last summer we distributed 24 cards for member referrals. 3. It’s not too late to enroll kids in our religious school, which begins September 8. 4. Membership includes tickets to High Holy Days services, which begin on September 29. 5. We’re continuing our new member buddy program…which includes special invitations and dinner at Rabbi Paley’s home.

Please send me a “referral” at [email protected] or give Steve Lewis, executive director, a call at 972-661-1810 x 202 or email [email protected]. And, let us know if we should or shouldn’t use your name in our outreach.

PS - Our current members are one of the most compelling reasons to join Temple Shalom. We’re starting a series of “Members share their stories” that will feature a variety of new and longtime members sharing their connection to our congregation. You will see them throughout this and future newsletters. Below is the first.

Members share their stories... "We moved to Texas from Baltimore knowing little about the Dallas Jewish community. On a whim, we attended a Friday evening Shabbat service at Temple Shalom. Instantly, we were drawn to the welcoming smiles and warmth of Temple Shalom members. Rabbi Paley's sermon that evening perfectly addressed our thoughts, allowing us to decompress from our stressful move and busy workweek. Seven years later and after introducing our three girls into the congregation, Rabbi Paley's sermons still move us and help us reaffirm our Judaism. Melinda now teaches in Temple Shalom's religious school and Andrew recently joined the Board of Trustees. For us, Temple Shalom is home." Melinda & Andrew Hepworth and 3 adorable girls Richardson

Temple Shalom is a member of Dallas Area Interfaith, an organization of over 25 congregations and other organizations, which engage in the work of Social Justice. We continue to build our Core Team for DAI and to continue to work with other DAI member organizations on Social Justice issues. Recently we met to develop the issues we want to work on right now. We defined immigration, health care, affordable housing and education as issues for continued organizing activities. We are linking with local congregations with similar concerns including Christian Temple of Faith on Noel Road and King of Glory Lutheran Church. DAI is continuing work on immigration issues through expansion of the nationally recognized and widely replicated Parish ID Project and on Health Care Access through a series of health fairs funded by the Christus Foundation. A Health Fair at San Juan Diego Catholic Church in the Bachman Lake area drew over 400 people. A second is being planned for August 18 at Our Lady of Lourdes in West Dallas. Northern Cluster congregations lead by San Juan Diego and Temple Emanuel are planning Know Your Rights immigration events. At least three further health fairs are being planned. A joint meeting with Temple Shalom, King of Glory and Christian Temple of Faith is being planned for early August. Upcoming DAI Events Building the Core Team – Joint planning meeting with King of Glory Lutheran Church and Christian Temple of Faith in early August Contact Barry Lachman for more information if you are interested. 8/18/2019 Health Fair – Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Parish Hall 5605 Bernal Avenus, Dallas 10 AM to 2 PM – Volunteers needed. 8/22/2019 DAI Monthly Meeting at St. Phillip the Apostle Catholic Church, 8178 Nelson Drive, Dallas at 7 PM. Midpoint Transfer for Asylum Seekers The Migrant Response Center is RE-OPENING the Respite Center to support asylum seekers coming from San Antonio that can get less expensive flights by flying out of Dallas-Ft Worth. This effort is very similar to the Respite center is set up to do, however, what is different is that it will be receiving migrants in smaller numbers on an "as needed" basis vs scheduled busses with set numbers of migrants. Volunteers should be actively watching email, the center website and the center Facebook page for announcements and volunteer opportunities. Needs will be posted on the center’s VoMo https://app.vomo.org/org/dallas-responds site to sign up. Please remember background checks are needed on everyone helping out at the center. We will need drivers for airport / hotel shuttles, as well as volunteers to assist at the Respite Center during the day. This work will be very dynamic and there may only be 1-2 days notice.

Join the Tikkun Olam Council to Sort Donated Clothing at Migrant Respite Center Friday, August 9 9:00am - 12:00pm If driving on your own, please ask for Pat Jones when you arrive.
