    Culture: An Introduction MODULE - I Understanding Culture Notes 1 CULTURE: AN INTRODUCTION he English word ‘Culture’ is derived from the Latin term ‘cult or cultus’ meaning tilling, or cultivating or refining and worship. In sum it means cultivating and refining Ta thing to such an extent that its end product evokes our admiration and respect. This is practically the same as ‘Sanskriti’ of the Sanskrit language. The term ‘Sanskriti’ has been derived from the root ‘Kri (to do) of Sanskrit language. Three words came from this root ‘Kri; prakriti’ (basic matter or condition), ‘Sanskriti’ (refined matter or condition) and ‘vikriti’ (modified or decayed matter or condition) when ‘prakriti’ or a raw material is refined it becomes ‘Sanskriti’ and when broken or damaged it becomes ‘vikriti’. OBJECTIVES After studying this lesson you will be able to: understand the concept and meaning of culture; establish the relationship between culture and civilization; Establish the link between culture and heritage; discuss the role and impact of culture in human life. 1.1 CONCEPT OF CULTURE Culture is a way of life. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, the language you speak in and the God you worship all are aspects of culture.     Religious Identity of Saraks: Problems and Prospects

    Asian African Journal of Sociology and Anthropology Vol. 1 No. 1 (June, 2020) , . 3 . 1 (2006) : 2938 Religious Identity of Saraks: Problems and Prospects Sarak is a little-known minority community. Etymologically Sarak is a derivative of Sravaka of which Sra (sraddha) means respect, Va (vivek) means consciousness and Ka (kriya) means work. That is how; an Sravak is defined as a person who happened to be a respectful and conscious worker. Again, Sravak in Sanskrit means a listener. The estimated population of Saraks in Dhanbad district of Bihar and Purulia, Bankura and Bardhaman districts of West Bengal may be around 34,000. Strictly vegetarian, thrifty and simple, Saraks remained more or less tied to agriculture and animal husbandry. They do not even take-up any occupation, which either involve any kind of violence or impurity. They preach and practice non-violence in their day to day living. Their gotras, food habit, occupational preferences, taboos and prejudices are indicative of Jainism, though they also worship Hindu and Tribal Gods. They are confused regarding their own religious identity. Their recent inclusion in O.B.C. not withstanding the question looms large as to what exactly are their religious origin and the present state of religious connections of Saraks. Official records do not enumerate them as a distinct community. Hindu Jativarna system does not also include them. Being a microscopic minority surrounded by overwhelming majority of Hindus and Tribals, they also participate in various rites and rituals of the Hindus and Animists. In order to know their position in the Hindu fold vis-à-vis present influence of Jainism in the life and culture of the Saraks information were collected from knowledgeable persons and leaders of the Sarak communities as well as from other communities.

Calcutta, the 10th June, 1994. NOTIFICATION WHEREAS consequent upon the abolition, redesignation and creation of posts of Deputy Commissioner of Excise under Memo. No. 211-Ex dated 12th April, 1994 it is necessary and expedient to reorganise the Preventive Branch of the Excise Directorate and redefine working units and their jurisdiction; AND WHEREAS such reorganisation and redefinition is immediately required for proper and efficient administration of the provisions of the Bengal Excise Act, 1909 and other laws relating to prevention & detection of crimes and prosecution of offenders; NO W THEREFORE the Governor is pleased to reorganise the erstwhile Preventive Branch of the Excise Directorate and create preventive divisions in the manner described below, and with immediate effect: PREVENTIVE DIVISIONS Under the general control of the Excise Commissioner, West Bengal, there shall be three Preventive Divisions, viz.— (a) Presidency Division, (b) Bardhaman Division, and (c) Jalpaiguri Division, each division being headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Excise, Preventive with headquarters at Calcutta, Bardhaman and Siliguri respectively. 93 PRESIDENCY DIVISION There shall be under the Deputy Commissioner of Excise, Preventive, Presidency Division, the following departments/sections, viz.     1_10_2009.qxp 18.6.2010 14:00 Stránka 95 • XLVII/1–2 • pp. 95–106 • 2009 SUDIP DATTA BANIK, RAJ KUMAR BARMAN, SHRABANTI MAITY, TANWI SUKUL, VIVEKANANDA ROY ETHNIC VARIATION IN ANTHROPOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS – A COMPARATIVE STUDY AMONG ADULT MALE ORAONS AND SARAKS OF RANCHI DISTRICT, JHARKHAND, INDIA ABSTRACT: A cross-sectional study was undertaken to investigate the ethnic variation and age-related changes in anthropometric characteristics and nutritional status among the adult males (18 years and above) of two endogamous populations, the Oraon tribe (n=290), and the Saraks (n=158), a comparatively less known caste group in the Ranchi District of the state of Jharkhand in India. The anthropometric characteristics (stature, body weight, mid-upper arm circumference or MUAC, waist circumference and hip circumference), derived index (body mass index or BMI) and ratio (waist-hip ratio or WHR) were categorized in three different age groups (18–39 years, 40–59 years and 60 years and above). Significant differences (p<0.0001) were observed (measured by student t-test) in mean values of anthropometric variables viz. body weight, BMI and hip circumference between the two studied samples. However, results displayed no significant difference in stature and a moderately significant difference in WHR (p<0.01) between the two sections. This particular investigation recorded high frequency of undernutrition (chronic energy deficiency or CED 53.10% among the Oraons and 27.85% among the Saraks), as measured by the WHO (1995) recommended values of BMI for the adults. It has been noted that 38.28% of the adult Oraons and 20.89% of the adult Saraks suffer from undernutrition when the nutritional status of the two communities is evaluated by the standard cut-off points of MUAC.
