ANALYSIS OF STREAM RUNOFF TRENDS IN THE BLUE RIDGE AND PIEDMONT OF SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES by USHA KHAREL Under the Direction of Seth Rose ABSTRACT The purpose of the study was to examine the temporal trends of three monthly variables: stream runoff, rainfall and air temperature and to find out if any correlation exists between rainfall and stream runoff in the Blue Ridge and Piedmont provinces of the southeast United States. Trend significance was determined using the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test on a monthly and annual basis. GIS analysis was used to find and integrate the urban and non-urban stream gauging, rainfall and temperature stations in the study area. The Mann-Kendall test showed a statistically insignificant temporal trend for all three variables. The correlation of 0.4 was observed for runoff and rainfall, which showed that these two parameters are moderately correlated. -

1 “Fresh Air and Cheer”: The Origins of Camp Louise in the Settlement House Movement of Baltimore’s Jewish Community by Barry Kessler One day in 1921, three Baltimoreans set out to visit a potential site for a summer retreat that would serve the city’s immigrant Jewish women. Ida Sharogrodsky, a social worker, and Lillie Straus, a philanthropist, had pleaded with Lillie’s husband, Aaron, one of Baltimore’s wealthiest merchants, to consider purchasing an old hotel in the Catoctin Mountains which they envisioned as an extension of the social service work they were doing in East Baltimore. Midway on the seventy‐mile trip, Aaron Straus seized on the pretext of a storm to turn back, but the ladies were undeterred, and once they arrived, the enchanting view of forested hills and fertile valleys overcame his reluctance. 1 The story of the three founders’ trip has served as the origin myth of Camp Louise, which matured from a vacation spot for working women to a traditional Jewish girls’ summer camp and is still operating almost a hundred years later. It’s a charming tale, retold over generations by camp alumnae and counselors, staff and community leaders. But the actual history of how Camp Louise emerged from Baltimore’s Progressive era efforts to aid, acculturate, and assimilate immigrants is more complex and in many ways more interesting. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Baltimore faced the twin pressures of industrialization and immigration, which gave rise to enormous challenges as well as critical opportunities for the city, and for its Jewish community in particular. -

Introduction A West Gambrill State Park is located along the eastern edge of the Blue Ridge b Physiographic Province. The Blue Ridge Mountains stretch from northern Georgia to southern Pennsylvania. The Blue Ridge is made up of folded Eas x t rocks that are broken in places by faults. In Maryland, the Blue Ridge b consists of two separate ridges-Catoctin Mountain, locally known as A B C Braddock Mountain on the east, and South Mountain to the west. The Blue Figure 1. Chapter 5: Virginia's Minerals & Energy Resources Part 1: Mineral Resources Minerals are the raw materials that support much of modern life - everything from transportation to the growing of food. Chemists, all sorts of manufacturers, farmers and a variety of artisans depend upon minerals to conduct business. Virginia's mineral deposits are vast and varied, but coal remains most important to the Commonwealth. Measuring Virginia's Geologic Wealth In Virginia the estimated dollar value of mineral resources produced has increased almost sevenfold in the past 44 years, from $545 million in 1973 to $3.7 billion in 2012. Yet this figure tells only a small part of the story of the importance of the state's geologic resources. Soil and water, two valuable resources and without which there would be no life, are not included. Nor are parks and other scenic and recreational areas, most of which owe their natural beauty to the geology of their location. The Blue Ridge mountains, the caverns and caves and the Shenandoah Valley are only a few examples. Geology and Mineral Exploration The science of geology is the study of the earth and its history and the processes and forces which are constantly at work changing the face of the earth. It is such a broad subject that it has been divided into a number of individual sciences: geophysics and oceanography for example. Geologists try to explain how the earth was formed and has changed through time. Many industries rely upon a geologist to locate new sources of raw materials. Through the use of field mapping and specialized investigative techniques, geologists discover and develop such resources as petroleum, iron ore, copper, limestone and sulfur. -

Chapter 8 Multi-millennial Record of Erosion and Fires in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains, USA David S. Leigh Abstract Bottomland sediments from the southern Blue Ridge Mountains provide a coarse-resolution, multi-millennial stratigraphic record of past regional forest disturbance (soil erosion). This record is represented by 12 separate vertical accre- tion stratigraphic profi les that have been dated by radiocarbon, luminescence, cesium-137, and correlation methods continuously spanning the past 3,000 years of pre-settlement (pre-dating widespread European American settlement) and post- settlement strata. Post-settlement vertical accretion began in the late 1800s, appears to be about an order of magnitude faster than pre-settlement rates, and is attribut- able to widespread deforestation for timber harvest, farming, housing develop- ment, and other erosive activities of people. Natural, climate-driven, or non-anthropic forest disturbance is subtle and diffi cult to recognize in pre-settle- ment deposits. There is no indication that pre-settlement Mississippian and Cherokee agricultural activities accelerated erosion and sedimentation in the region. A continuous 11,244 years before present (BP) vertical accretion record from a meander scar in the Upper Little Tennessee River valley indicates abundant charcoal (prevalent fi res) at the very beginning of the Holocene (11,244–10,900 years BP). In contrast, moderate to very low levels of charcoal are apparent over the remaining Holocene until about 2,400 years BP when charcoal infl ux registers a pronounced increase. These data are consistent with the idea that Native Americans used fi re extensively to manage forests and to expanded agricultural activities during Woodland and later cultural periods over the past 3000 years.
