Chilena Ent. 2012, 37: 47-60 REVISION OF THE CHILEAN GENUS PTYOPHIS (SCARABAEIDAE: MOLOLONTHINAE: MACRODACTYLINI) REVISIÓN DEL GÉNERO CHILENO PTYOPHIS (SCARABAEIDAE: MOLOLONTHINAE: MACRODACTYLINI) José Mondaca1 and Federico Ocampo2 ABSTRACT The genus Ptyophis Redtenbacher, endemic to central Chile, is revised and now includes two species: P. paulseni (Philippi) and P. eiderae Mondaca and Ocampo, nov. sp. Redescrip- tion of the genus, diagnosis, key to species, illustrations and distribution map are provided. Based on morphological examination, we transfer Ptyophis from Tanyproctini to Macro- dactylini, and hypothesized relationships with other Chilean macrodactylines. To preserve nomenclatural stability, a lectotype is designated for Ptyophis macrophylla Redtenbacher and a neotype is designated for Tetraphyllus paulseni Philippi. Observations on the habitat, natural history, and distribution of species are given. Key words: Central Chile, junior homonym, Pachydemini, Tanyproctini, Tetraphyllus. RESUMEN El género Ptyophis Redtenbacher, endémico de Chile central, es revisado y ahora incluye dos especies: P. paulseni (Philippi) y P. eiderae Mondaca y Ocampo, nov. sp. Se provee una redescripción del género, diagnosis, clave para las especies, ilustraciones y un mapa de distribución. Basado en un estudio morfológico, transferimos a Ptyophis desde la tribu Tanyproctini a la tribu Macrodactylini, e hipotetizamos las relaciones con otros Macrodac- tylini chilenos. Para preservar la estabilidad nomenclatural, designamos un lectotipo para Ptyophis macrophylla Redtenbacher y un neotipo para Tetraphyllus paulseni Philippi. Se entregan observaciones sobre el hábitat, historia natural, y distribución de las especies. Palabras clave: Chile Central, homónimo menor, Pachydemini, Tanyproctini, Tetraphyllus. A survey of Wisconsin Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) conducted from literature searches, collection inventories, and three years of field work (1997-1999), yielded 177 species representing nine families, two of which, Ochodaeidae and Ceratocanthidae, represent new state family records. Fifty-six species (32% of the Wisconsin fauna) represent new state species records, having not previously been recorded from the state. Literature and collection distributional records suggest the potential for at least 33 additional species to occur in Wisconsin. To reconstruct the phylogeny of the Sericini and their systematic position among the scarabaeid beetles, cladistic analyses were performed using 107 morphological characters from the adults and larvae of forty-nine extant scarabaeid genera. Taxa represent most ‘traditional’ subfamilies of coprophagous and phytophagous Scarabaeidae, with emphasis on the Sericini and other melo- lonthine lineages. Several poorly studied exoskeletal features have been examined, including the elytral base, posterior wing venation, mouth parts, endosternites, coxal articulation, and genitalia. The results of the analysis strongly support the monophyly of the ‘orphnine group’ þ ‘melolonthine group’ including phytopha- gous scarabs such as Dynastinae, Hopliinae, Melolonthinae, Rutelinae, and Cetoniinae. This clade was identified as the sister group to the ‘dung beetle line’ represented by Aphodius þ Copris. The ‘melolonthine group’ is comprised in the strict consensus tree by two major clades and two minor lineages, with the included taxa of Euchirinae, Rutelinae, and Dynastinae nested together in one of the major clades (‘melolonthine group I’). Melolonthini, Cetoniinae, and Rutelinae are strongly supported, whereas Melolonthinae and Pachydemini appear to be paraphyletic. Sericini þ Ablaberini were identified to be sister taxa nested within the second major melolonthine clade (‘melolonthine group II’). As this clade is distributed primarily in the southern continents, one could assume that Sericini þ Ablaberini are derived from a southern lineage. -

In Parastasia the beetle (imago) visits flowers, and the grub (larva) lives in dead trunks of more or less hard wood. In Anomala the beetle is a leaf feeder, and the grub lives in the earth, feeding on the roots of living plants. In Adoretus the beetle feeds on flowers and leaves; the grub lives in the earth and feeds upon the roots of living plants. In some species of Anornala and Adoretus, both beetles and grubs are noxious to culti vated plants, and it has been observed that eggs or young grubs of these species have been transported in the soil-wrapping around roots or parts of roots of such plants as the banana, cassava, and sugar cane. DISTRIBUTION With the exception of two species, the Rutelinae found on the continent of Australia (including Tasmania) belong to the subtribe Anoplognathina. The first exception is Anomala (Aprosterna) antiqua Gyllenhal (australasiae Blackburn), found in northeast Queensland in cultivated places near the coast. This species is abundant from British India and southeast China in the west to New Guinea in the east, stated to be noxious here and there to cultivated plants. It was probably brought to Queensland by brown or white men, as either eggs or young grubs in soil around roots of bananas, cassava, or sugar cane. -

They form a complex consisting of many species belonging to several genera that affect the roots of commercial crops. The objec- tive of the present study was to identify the members of the complex present in two localities (Caldono and Buenos Aires) and collect basic information on their biology, economic impor- tance, and larval morphology. The first of two types of sampling involved sampling adults in light traps installed weekly throughout one year. The second method involved larval collec- tions in plots of cassava, pasture, coffee, and woodland. Each locality was visited once per month and 10 samples per plot were collected on each occasion, with each sample from a quad- rants 1 m2 by 15 cm deep, during 1999-2000. Light traps collected 12,512 adults belonging to 45 species and 21 genera of Scarabaeidae within the subfamilies Dynastinae, Melolonthinae, and Rutelinae. Members of the subfamily Dynastinae predominated with 48% of the species (mostly Cyclocephala), followed in decreasing order by Melolonthinae (35%) and Rutelinae (15%, principally Anomala). -

Phylogenetic Relationships and Distribution of the Rhizotrogini (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Melolonthinae) in the West Mediterranean

Coca-Abia* ABSTRACT In this paper, the West Mediterranean genera of Rhizotrogini are reviewed. Two kinds of character sets are discussed: those relative to the external morphology of the adult and those of the male and female genitalia. Genera Amadotrogus Reitter, 1902; Amphimallina Reitter, 1905; Amphimallon Berthold, 1827; Geotrogus Guérin-Méneville, 1842; Monotropus Erichson, 1847; Pseudoapeterogyna Escalera, 1914 and Rhizotrogus Berthold, 1827 are analysed: to demonstrate the monophyly of this group of genera; to asses the realtionships of these taxa; to test species transferred from Rhizotrogus to Geotrogus and Monotropus, and to describe external morphological and male and female genitalic cha- racters which distinguish each genus. Phylogenetic analysis leads to the conclusion that this group of genera is monophyletic. However, nothing can be said about internal relationships of the genera, which remain in a basal polytomy. Some of the species tranferred from Rhizotrogus are considered to be a new genus Firminus. The genera Amphimallina and Pseudoapterogyna are synonymized with Amphimallon and Geotrogus respectively. Price Department of Biological Sciences Salisbury University This document is a pictorial reference of Maryland Scarabaeoidea genera (and sometimes species) that was created to expedite the identification of Maryland Scarabs. Our current understanding of Maryland Scarabs comes from “An Annotated Checklist of the Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) of Maryland” (Staines 1984). Staines reported 266 species and subspecies using literature and review of several Maryland Museums. Dr. Price and her research students are currently conducting a bioinventory of Maryland Scarabs that will be used to create a “Taxonomic Guide to the Scarabaeoidea of Maryland”.
