It is early Celtic interlaced work such as is not found elsewhere in England except in Northumbria. The cross gives a name to a once noted Devon family which comes in the local rhyme: Crocker, Cruwys, and Coplestone, When the Conqueror came were found at home. As lockdown hopefully eases and more things open up again, there is lots to celebrate in April: April Fools’ Day, also called All Fools’ Day, got its name from the custom of playing practical 1st jokes on this day - for example, telling friends that their shoelaces are untied or sending them on so-called fools’ errands. Although the day has been observed for centuries, its origins are unknown. In the UK, jokes and tricks can be played up until noon. After midday it's considered bad luck to play a trick. Anyone who forgets and tries a joke in the afternoon becomes the 'April Fool'! Good Friday commemorates the day when Jesus Christ was betrayed and executed by 2nd the Romans in Jerusalem 2000 years ago. Some sources suggest that the day is called "good" in that it is holy, or that the phrase is a corruption of "God's Friday". Easter Day marks the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, bringing light, joy and salva- 4th tion. According to the Bible, this happened on the third day after his crucifixion. Many customs are associated with Easter, including Easter eggs and egg hunting, the Easter bunny and Easter pa- rades - see our Easter Biscuit Recipe on page 7. A request was made for the Council to consider the installation of speed monitoring cameras at a cost of £500 for two weeks to monitor vehicle speeds through Chawleigh. The issue of speeding cars was discussed under minute 17.221 below. Standing Orders were suspended 2. COUNTY AND DISTRICT COUNCILLORS’ REPORTS 17.201 Devon County Council Apologies were received from Cllr Squires. 17.202 Mid Devon District Council Cllr Eginton reported that the six-monthly inspection had been completed of Mid Devon District Council’s properties in Chawleigh.
