Main Storyline: Three years following Ahab’s truce with Ben-Hadad (Syria), Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, came to visit Ahab (recall their alliance from 2 Chronicles 18:1). Ahab remarked that, though Ramoth- Gilead belonged to Israel, they had allowed Syria to hold it. He asked Jehoshaphat to help him to take the city back from Syria. Jehoshaphat asked that the Lord be consulted before they enter into battle. Ahab called about 400 prophets of Baal who agreed that Ahab should attack Ramoth-Gilead. Despite all of this “reassurance,” Jehoshaphat asked that a prophet of the Lord be consulted. Ahab lamented that there was one prophet of God still in the land, Michaiah, but that he hated him, since he always prophesies that bad things will happen to him. Jehoshaphat insisted that he be brought. The messenger who went to get Michaiah told him that all the other prophets had given encouragement to the king. He asked Michaiah to prophesy similarly. Michaiah told him that he would speak as God instructed him. When Michaiah came, at first he simply gave the same advice that the other prophets had. However, Ahab realized Michaiah was not telling the truth, and insisted that he do so. Michaiah then told everyone that Ahab would die in the battle. -

2 Chronicles Chapter 36 Verses 1-16: Ignoring God’s warnings will bring destruction (in this case, exile). Paying attention to God’s warnings will save a person from destruction. One of the responsibilities of being a Christian is warning people of God’s coming judgment and the way of deliverance provided through Jesus. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the LORD. 3 The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the LORD--to follow the LORD and keep his commands, regulations and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant. 4 The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. Tonight we are going to continue in our study through the Old Testament, we will be in 2 Chronicles Chapter 25 and we will attempt to get through Chapter 28 tonight. We have much going on in our world, and for me, it is a joy to gather here with you all to come under God’s Word. This place is the only place that makes sense, and His Word is the only True Comfort in this World. So let’s pray, and we will get into our text tonight. Well, we finished last time by looking at the assassination of King Joash of Judah, and we will pick up right after his death… Look now at chapter 25… Amaziah Reigns in Judah(2 Kings 14:1-6) 25:1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a loyal heart. Now Amaziah was a reformer just like Joash his father. Page 2 of 29 But we see here at the end of verse two, he fell short of complete reform. He did not live up to the standard that King David had set as the template, and he continued to allow the high places to exist as we saw in 2 Kings Chapter 14. -

Matt Kruse Newton Bible Church 1-5-14 AM Service “Amaziah: The Wholly Half-Hearted King” Who’s the Boss? – A series on the Kings 2 Chronicles 25 Introduction: Take your Bibles and turn to 2 Chronicles 25, 2 Chronicles chapter 25. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to attend your funeral? What would others say about you? I know this is a terribly morbid question to ask right after the joy of the Christmas season, but really, have you ever wondered what your funeral would be like? There were three men who got into that very conversation one day. One of them said to the group – what do you want people to say at your funeral? The first guy waxed eloquent about how he hopes his kids remember him as the best father a child could have. The second guy said that he hopes people remember him as generous and loving and easy to get along with. To which the third guy said, I hope at my funeral that someone says – “Look, He’s moving!” Some of you will get that on the way home today. As we look out over a year that is gone and a new one that is beginning this is a very fitting question to ask – what do you want your obituary to say? One of the tremendous benefits of the calendar being flipped from one year to the next is that it gives us a natural pause in which we should consider the course of our life over the last 12 months. -

THROUGH THE BIBLE STUDY 2 CHRONICLES 18-22 The children’s series VeggieTales has sold over 52 million DVD and VHS copies. Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber teach biblical values to kids. The series became so popular it was sold to NBC and added to its Saturday morning kids programming. But it didn’t take long for NBC editors to go to work. Non-historical references to God and the Bible were sliced - even Bob and Larry’s trademark ending - “Remember kids, God made you special, and loves you very much…” - is gone. The vitamins were cooked out of VeggieTales. The series’ creator, Phil Vischer confessed, had he known how much the shows would change he wouldn’t have signed on to the network deal. Vischer sums it up this way, “VeggieTales is religious – NBC is not.” It’s a classic case of what the Bible calls being “unequally yoked.” 2 Corinthians 6:14 says it best, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” This is a farming analogy… Different species of animals, with diverse natures, harnessed together will struggle to cooperate. They’ll pull in opposite directions. And when a Christian becomes entangled with a non- Christian in a legally binding relationship some kind of compromise is the inevitable outcome. !1 It happens when a believer and an unbeliever go into business. It happens when a believer and an unbeliever get married. It happens when NBC and VeggieTales partner together. And it happened when Jehoshaphat joined forces with Israel. 2 Chronicles 18, “Jehoshaphat had riches and honor in abundance; and by marriage he allied himself with Ahab.” Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, married the daughter of his northern rival, King Ahab. -
Lessons from Josiah's Revival
LESSONS FROM JOSIAH’S REVIVAL 2 Chronicles 34–35 1. Revival begins with seeking the LORD (2 Chron 34:3). Revival began in Israel when a young king began to seek the LORD: “in the eighth year of his reign while he was still a youth, he began to seek the God of his father David” (2 Chron 34:3a). Revival is the fulfillment of the promises “If you seek Him, He will let you find Him” (1 Chron 28:9; 2 Chron 15:2) and ‘you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jer 29:13). 2. Revival can begin with a teenager (2 Chron 34:3). Since Josiah “was eight years old when he became king” (34:1a) and he started seeking God “in the eighth year of his reign” (34:3a), this national revival in Israel began when king Josiah was only sixteen years old. He initiated the most sweeping reform in ancient Israel. 3. Revival removes all competing religious paraphernalia (2 Chron 34:3–7). In a national revival, such as occurred in the days of King Josiah, all false prophets, false religions, and cult objects are removed from the nation: “they tore down the altars of the Baals in his presence, and the incense altars that were high above them he chopped down; also the Asherim, the carved images, and the molten images he broke in pieces and ground to powder and scattered it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them” (34:4). 4. -

Athaliah vs Jehoiada the Hight Priest, 1 In the seventh year Jehoiada showed his strength. He made a covenant with the commanders of units of a hundred: Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zikri. 2 They went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites and the heads of Israelite families from all the towns.
