2 Chronicles 1:1 2 CHRONICLES CHAPTER 1 King Solomon's solemn offering at Gibeon, 2Ch_1:1-6. His choice of wisdom is blessed by God, 2Ch_1:7-12. His strength and wealth, 1Ch_1:13-17. Was strengthened, or established , after his seditious brother Adonijah and his partisans were suppressed; and he was received with the universal consent and joy of his princes and people. 2 Chronicles 1:2 Then Solomon spake, to wit, concerning his intention of going to Gibeon, and that they should attend him thither, as the next verse shows. 2 Chronicles 1:3 To the high place; upon which the tabernacle was placed; whence it is called the great high place , 1Ki_3:4. 2 Chronicles 1:4 He separated the ark from the tabernacle, and brought it to Jerusalem, because there he intended to build a far more noble and lasting habitation for it. 2 Chronicles 1:5 He put; either Moses, mentioned 2Ch_1:3, or Bezaleel, here last named, by the command and direction of Moses; or David, who may be said to put it there, because he continued it there, and did not remove it, as he did the ark from the tabernacle. Sought unto it, i.e. sought the Lord and his favour by hearty prayers and sacrifices in the place which God had appointed for that work, Lev_17:3,4. 2 Chronicles 1:6 i.e. Which altar. But that he had now said, 2Ch_1:5, and therefore would not unnecessarily repeat it. Or rather, who ; and so these words are emphatical, and contain a reason why Solomon went thither, because the Lord was there graciously present to hear prayers and receive sacrifices. -

Athaliah, a treacherous queen: A careful analysis of her story in 2 Kings 11 and 2 Chronicles 22:10-23:21 Robin Gallaher Branch School of Biblical Sciences & Bible Languages Potchefstroom Campus North-West University POTCHEFSTROOM E-mail: [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Athaliah, a treacherous queen: A careful analysis of her story in 2 Kings 11 and 2 Chronicles 22:10-23:21 This article presents a critical look at the story of the reign of Athaliah, the only ruling queen of Israel or Judah in the biblical text. Double reference in 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles shows her story’s importance and significance to the biblical writers. The largely parallel accounts read like a contemporary soap opera, for they contain murder, intrigue, harem politics, religious upheaval, and coup and counter-coup. Her story provides insights on the turbulent political climate of the ninth century BC. However, the purpose of the biblical writers is not to show Athaliah as the epitome of evil or that all women in power are evil. Die dubbele verwysings na hierdie tyd in 2 Konings en 2 Kronieke dui op die belangrikheid en betekenis van haar verhaal vir die Bybel- skrywers. 2 Chronicles 1:1 1 2 Chronicles 1:10 The Second Book of Chronicles 1 Solomon the son of David was firmly established in his kingdom, and Yahweh* his God† was with him, and made him exceedingly great. 2 Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the captains of thou- sands and of hundreds, to the judges, and to every prince in all Israel, the heads of the fathers’ households. 3 Then Solomon, and all the assembly with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for God’s Tent of Meeting was there, which Yahweh’s servant Moses had made in the wilderness. 4 But David had brought God’s ark up from Kiriath Jearim to the place that David had prepared for it; for he had pitched a tent for it at Jerusalem. 5 Moreover the bronze altar that Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was there before Yahweh’s tabernacle; and Solomon and the assembly were seeking counsel there. 6 Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before Yahweh, which was at the Tent of Meeting, and offered one thousand burnt offerings on it. 7 That night, God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for what you want me to give you.” 8 Solomon said to God, “You have shown great loving kindness to David my father, and have made me king in his place. 9 Now, Yahweh God, let your promise to David my father be established; for you have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. -

The Second Book Of The Chronicles The Argument This second book containeth briefly in effect that, which is comprehended in the two books of the Kings: that is, from the reign of Solomon to the destruction of Jerusalem, and the carrying away of the people captive into Babylon. In this story are certain things declared and set forth more copiously than in the books of the Kings, and therefore serve greatly to the understanding of the Prophets. But three things are here chiefly to be considered. First, that the godly kings, when they saw the plagues of God prepared against their country for sin, had recourse to the Lord, and by earnest prayer were heard, and the plagues removed. The second, how it is a thing that greatly offendeth God, how the good rulers ever loved the Prophets of God, and were very zealous to set forth his religion throughout all their dominions, and contrariwise, the wicked hated his ministers, deposed them, and for the true religion and word of God, set up idolatry, and served God according to the fantasy of men. They possessed the law. They had the duty to act as judge, preserve justice, and proclaim the law. Many of the kings were wicked themselves and encouraged injustice and wickedness to flourish. It was the prophets that provided a check upon the waywardness of the kings. The failure of the kings to live up to the ideal tended to cast the hope for a righteous ruler more and more into the future. This became known as the messianic hope. This messianic hope was fulfilled only in Jesus Christ. -

Read 2 Chronicles 1 In that night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, "Ask what I shall give you." 2 Chron 1:7 Have you ever wondered what you would ask for if you had three wishes? From the first time I heard about genies in lamps, I’ve wondered this question. I usually thought I’d wish to be taller, richer, or maybe famous. Honestly, most people would probably ask for some different variations of my requests. But what would you really ask for? Have you ever thought about it? Solomon had many options to choose from, and he choose wisdom. Ultimately, most of the things that we might choose would be temporary and fleeting. Riches can be squandered. We shrink with age. Fame is fleeting. If I could ask something, I would ask that the Holy Spirit would never allow me to miss an opportunity to share the gospel. There are few feelings worse than knowing you missed the chance to emphasize eternity with a person. Solomon was blessed because he didn’t waste such a special gift from the Lord. He asked for something that would last him his entire life and allow him to serve God in a greater way. How would you have answered God? When you pray, do you find yourself praying more for issues that will improve your walk with Him, or simply the various issues of the day? There is nothing wrong with praying for the little things, but don’t miss out on the big things in your life like patience, faith, and gospel obedience. -
The Israelites in Palestine During the Babylonian Exile
Farisani: The Israelites in Palestine OTE 21/1 (2008), 69-88 69 The Israelites in Palestine during the Babylonian Exile ELELWANI FARISANI UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL ABSTRACT This paper analyses the identity and conditions of the Israelite community who did not go into the Babylonian exile. Their identity, religious background, and socio-economic conditions are investi- gated. Despite the fact that they were the majority, they were left poor through the redistribution plan of the Babylonians. They con- tinued to worship at the site of the temple, and the people who re- turned after the exile therefore had no right to exclude them from rebuilding the temple. A INTRODUCTION I have argued elsewhere (Farisani 2002; 2003) that a contestation exists be- tween the #rah ~[ and the returned exiles1 in Ezra-Nehemiah, and that the Ezra-Nehemiah text is coloured with an exclusivist ideology, an ideology which is biased in favour of the returned exiles, but against the #rah ~[. Fur- thermore, I have also argued that if Ezra-Nehemiah were to be used by theolo- gians to address the current challenges in Africa, it would have to be read ta- king into account the voice of the #rah ~[ as well as that of the returned exiles, rather than addressing the latter alone (Farisani 2002; 2004). I have also pro- vided a detailed discussion of both the religious and socio-economic conditions of the Israelites in exile (Farisani 2004). This paper focuses only on the Israelite community that did not go into exile. The purpose of this paper is thus to provide a socio-historical analysis of the conflict between the #rah ~[ and the returned exiles by only discussing the Israelites in Palestine. -

Lesson 11 – 2 Kings 11-12 Text: 2 Kings 11-12; 2 Chronicles 22-23 Main Characters: God, Athaliah, Jehoiada, Jehoshabeath, Joash Key Passages: - 2 Chronicles 23:16 – Jehoiada reaffirmed the covenant between God and the people: that they should be His people, and that He would be their God. - 2 Kings 11:20-21 – All of the people of Judah rejoiced when the evil Athaliah was killed. Main Storyline: When Athaliah saw that her son, Ahaziah (king of Judah), was dead, she killed all of the other heirs of the throne of Judah except for one baby son, Joash. Joash was rescued from Athaliah by King Ahaziah’s (Judah) sister, Jehoshabeath. Jehoshabeath was also the wife of a priest, Jehoiada. Together, they hid Joash from Athaliah for six years in the temple while Queen Athaliah reigned over Judah. In the seventh year, Jehoiada brought together the captains of the army with all of their men. They went throughout Judah, gathered all of the Levites and elders from all of the different cities, and assembled in Jerusalem. The whole group met together in the temple of God and made a covenant with the rightful king (Joash) to restore him to the throne. Together, they planned to keep watch over the king’s house and the house of God (the temple) in order to protect the king. Jehoiada then called the people together in the temple. They brought out Joash, put the crown on him, and made him king of Judah. Jehoiada and his sons anointed him with oil and said, “Long live the king!” All of the people began to shout and praise the new king of Judah with trumpets and songs. -
