The compilation represents the results of work undertaken on a series of programs with the objectives of advancing the art of valve technology used on liquid chemical propulsion spacecraft engines. The compilation is pub- lished in two volumes. Volume I reports the results of the work accomplished on the Mechanical Controls (Moving Parts) study including instrumentation and technology support investigations. This volume (Volume 11) reports on the Nonmechanical Controls (No Moving Parts) and represents those controls having no moving or sliding parts including fluidics and electro-fluid modulation devices. The program was originated and managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory under the technical direction of Mr. Louis R. Toth. The NASA Program Manager was Mr. Frank E. Compitello, Code RPL, Office of Advanced Research and Technology. The work performed on the program was accomplished by TRW Systems Group, Science and Technology Division, Technology Laboratory. Mr. R. J. Salvinski of the Applied Technology Department was the Program Manager. Mr. C. Mangion of the Applied Technology Department was the major contributor and author of Volume 11. INTRODUCTION The purpose of the Advanced Valve Technology Compilation is to document in a single source the results of the efforts expended during the past several years on advancing the state of the art of valves and controls used on liquid chemical rocket engines for manned and unmanned space exploration vehicles. The controls studied were those used with earth and space storables and cryogenic propellants at pressures to 1000 psia and operate for periods of up to ten years. The ten year requirement was considered in conjunction with missions beyond Jupiter to the outer planets, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Considerations were given to electrical, pneumatic (hot and cold gas) and hydraulic actuated valves and actuator concepts. Functional requirements for valves and actuators include zero leakage, service life (1,000 to 10,000 cycles), low weight, minimum size, minimum pressure drop and minimum power consumption. Environmental parametric requirements include zero gravity, radiation, shock and vibration, sterili- zation (300°F temperature soak, and/or ethylene oxide sterilant), thermal shock, thermal cycling, vacuum and other effects anticipated by operating for periods of two, five and ten years in the space and planetary environments. Thrust levels used for specific valve and control applica- tions were 50 lb, 200 lb and 1000 lb. Two broad classes of valve and controls technology are emerging which find application to controlling the flow of gaseous pressurants and liquid propellants. The two classes of flow are: 1) Mechanical Controls (moving parts) and 2) Nonmechanical Controls (no moving parts). The first class includes those valves represented by mechanical elements such as diaphragms, seals, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical actuators. The second class represents a group of fluid controls that have no sliding or moving parts and include fluidics and electric and magnetic fluid interaction devices. The valve compilation is produced in two volumes, Volume I Mechanical Controls and Volume I1 Nonmechanical ContFols. The compilation is divided into eight sections which make up the two volumes. Volume I - Mechanical Controls 1.0 Introduction 2.0 Operational, Functional and Environmental Considerations 3.0 Materials 4.0 Valves 5.0 Leakage and Seal Technology 6.0 Valve Actuators 7.0 Instrmentation and Measurement Volume II - Nomechanical Controls 8.0 Fluidics Fluidics is a new technology which is based on the utilization of fluid dynamic phenomena to performing sensing, signal amplification and process- ing, and power amplification in control functions without moving parts. Hybrid devices based on fluidic principles as well as fluidic components are being considered for spacecraft liquid propulsion application because of the unique capabilities they offer. The elimination or minimization of moving mechanical parts allows the design of more rugged components, with improved reliability, that can be fabricated from a wide range of materials. These characteristics coupled with fluid operation results in components that are insensitive to extreme temperature, radiation, vibration, and shock environments. The major source of the material used in compiling the Volume I1 compila- tion were taken from the following references: 1.     POPPET VALVE A poppet valve is a valve consisting of a hole, usually round or oval, and a tapered plug, usually a disk shape on the end of a shaft also called a valve stem. The shaft guides the plug portion by sliding through a valve guide. In most applications a pressure differential helps to seal the valve and in some applications also open it. Other types Presta and Schrader valves used on tires are examples of poppet valves. The Presta valve has no spring and relies on a pressure differential for opening and closing while being inflated. Uses Poppet valves are used in most piston engines to open and close the intake and exhaust ports. Poppet valves are also used in many industrial process from controlling the flow of rocket fuel to controlling the flow of milk[[1]]. The poppet valve was also used in a limited fashion in steam engines, particularly steam locomotives. Most steam locomotives used slide valves or piston valves, but these designs, although mechanically simpler and very rugged, were significantly less efficient than the poppet valve. A number of designs of locomotive poppet valve system were tried, the most popular being the Italian Caprotti valve gear[[2]], the British Caprotti valve gear[[3]] (an improvement of the Italian one), the German Lentz rotary-cam valve gear, and two American versions by Franklin, their oscillating-cam valve gear and rotary-cam valve gear. They were used with some success, but they were less ruggedly reliable than traditional valve gear and did not see widespread adoption.     Air-Cooled Aircraft Engine Cylinders An Evolutionary Odyssey by George Genevro Part 2 - Developments in the U.S. The Lawrance-Wright Era. In the U.S., almost the only proponent of the air-cooled engine during World War I was the Lawrance Aero Engine Company. This small New York City firm had produced the crude opposed twins that powered the Penguin trainers, which were supposed to be the stepping-stone to the Jenny for aspiring military pilots. The Penguins were not intended to fly but apparently could taxi at a speed that would provide some excitement for trainees as they tried to maintain directional control and develop some feel of what flight controls were all about. The Lawrance twins, which can be seen in many museums, had directly opposed air- cooled cylinders and a crankshaft with a single crankpin to which both connecting rods were attached. This arrangement resulted in an engine that shook violently at all speeds and was therefore essentially useless for normal powered flight. After World War I, some attempts were made, generally unsuccessful, to convert the Lawrance twins into usable engines for light aircraft by fitting a two-throw crankshaft and welding an offset section into the connecting rods. This proves that the desire to fly can be very strong indeed in some individuals. The hairpin valve springs pictured to the left were possibly pioneered by Salmson in 1911, and later used not only on British single-cylinder racing motorcycle engines, but also by Ferrari and others into the 1950s. This use was a response to the same problem that led to desmodromic valves at Ducati, Norton (test only) and Mercedes - namely the fatigue of coil springs from "ringing".

    Control Valve Sizing Theory, Cavitation, Flashing Noise, Flashing and Cavitation Valve Pressure Recovery Factor When a fluid passes through the valve orifice there is a marked increase in velocity. Velocity reaches a maximum and pressure a minimum at the smallest sectional flow area just downstream of the orifice opening. This point of maximum velocity is called the Vena Contracta. Downstream of the Vena Contracta the fluid velocity decelerates and the pressure increases of recovers. The more stream lined valve body designs like butterfly and ball valves exhibit a high degree of pressure recovery where as Globe style valves exhibit a lower degree of pressure recovery because of the Globe geometry the velocity is lower through the vena Contracta. The Valve Pressure Recovery Factor is used to quantify this maximum velocity at the vena Contracta and is derived by testing and published by control valve manufacturers. The Higher the Valve Pressure Recovery Factor number the lower the downstream recovery, so globe style valves have high recovery factors. ISA uses FL to represent the Valve Recovery Factor is valve sizing equations. Flow Through a restriction • As fluid flows through a restriction, the Restriction Vena Contracta fluid’s velocity increases. Flow • The Bernoulli Principle P1 P2 states that as the velocity of a fluid or gas increases, its pressure decreases.     What is a PRV? A PRV is a Pressure Reducing Valve that is commonly placed on water distribution systems and within individual homes, multi-family homes and businesses. There are two types of water pressure reducing valves, direct acting and pilot operated. Both use globe or angle style bodies. Valves used on smaller piping diameter units are cast from brass; larger piping diameter units are made from ductile iron. Direct acting valves, the more popular type of a water pressure reducing valves, consist of globe-type bodies with a spring-loaded, heat-resistant diaphragm connected to the outlet of the valve that acts upon a spring. This spring holds a pre-set tension on the valve seat installed with a pressure equalizing mechanism for precise water pressure control. Installed in series and soon after the water meter in homes, commercial buildings, and manufacturing plants, a water pressure reducing valve automatically reduces the pressure from the water supply main to a lower, more sensible pressure. Water entering the valve from municipal mains is constricted within the valve body and directed through the inner chamber controlled by an adjustable spring loaded diaphragm and disc. Even if the supply water pressure fluctuates, the pressure reducing valve ensures a constant flow of water at a functional pressure, as long as the supply pressure does not drop below the valve's pre-set pressure. Municipal PRV’s The Municipal water system in Lyons is managed by the Town. In Lyons, as in other communities, the municipal system delivers pressurized water in pipes to homes that are located at various elevations.

A computational model based on the finite volume method was developed to characterize the flow at the interior of the valve while it is moving. The model was validated using published data from the valve manufacturer. This data was in accordance with the experimental model. The model was used to predict the behavior of the device as it is operated at high frequencies. Non-dimensional parameters for generalizing and analyzing the effects of the properties of the fluid were used. It was found that it is possible to enhance the dynamic behavior of the valve by altering the viscosity of the working fluid. Finally, using the generated model, the influence of the angle of the poppet was analyzed. It was found that angle has a minimal effect on pressure. However, flow forces increase as angle decreases.
