Marine gillnets and trammel nets, which have relatively high ghost fishing potential, are globally important gear types, supplying about a fifth of global marine fisheries landings. The study describes and evaluates approaches to estimate ghost fishing mortality rates and levels and reviews the status of international monitoring and management of ALDFG and ghost fishing by marine gillnet and trammel net fisheries. The study scope covered abandoned, lost or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) from marine gillnet and trammel net fisheries. It describes methods to estimate ghost fishing mortality rates and levels, and synthesizes estimates of loss rates, density, duration of fishing efficiency and ghost fishing mortality rates. It also assesses related measures of regional bodies and arrangements for monitoring and managing ALDFG and ghost fishing. Information for the study was obtained through a review of published and grey literature, and consultations with relevant intergovernmental organizations. iv Abstract The ecological and socio-economic problems caused by abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) are increasingly of concern. Used primarily by coastal, artisanal, small-scale fisheries worldwide, marine gillnets and trammel nets, which have relatively high ghost fishing potential, account for about one-fifth of global marine fisheries landings. FAO and the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities, hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme, as Secretariat for the Global Partnership on Marine Litter, commissioned this study to identify best practices to estimate ghost fishing mortality rates and levels, priority research needs, and the status of international monitoring and management of ALDFG and ghost fishing by marine gillnet and trammel net fisheries. Accurate estimates of total ghost fishing mortality levels can be made given quality data on the density of ALDFG retaining fishing efficiency, duration of ghost fishing efficiency, and total ghost fishing mortality level of a unit of effort of ALDFG over the full period that the derelict gear retains fishing efficiency. Recommendations to improve estimates of regional and global rates and levels of ghost fishing from ALDFG from marine gillnet and trammel net fisheries were made. An assessment was made and opportunities were identified to improve intergovernmental organizations’ data collection protocols and management measures to prevent and remediate ALDFG and ghost fishing by marine gillnets and trammel nets. There is a need for reform in both fisheries and aquaculture to reduce their environmental and social impacts. USAID’s experience has shown that well-designed programs can reform capture fisheries management, reducing threats to biodiversity while leading to increased productivity, incomes, and livelihoods. Agency programs have focused on an ecosystem-based approach to management in conjunction with improved governance, secure tenure and access to resources, and the application of modern management practices.

In 2005, the Snohomish Basin Salmon Recovery Forum (Forum) adopted the Snohomish River Basin Salmon Conservation Plan1 (Salmon Plan), defining a multi-salmon strategy for the Snohomish Basin that emphasizes two ESA-listed species, Chinook salmon and bull trout, and the non-listed coho salmon. These species are used as proxies for other Basin salmon to help prevent future listings. Students will build a model healthy reef ecosystem, damage it using a ghost net, and then remove it from the reef. Students will conduct a damage assessment caused by the net dragging across the reef using quadrats. Background information: Coral reefs, also known as the rainforests of the sea, are one of the most diverse and ecologically complex marine ecosystems. They are found in warm, tropical waters with high salinity and high light exposure. A coral reef is made up of individual coral polyps that resemble tiny anemones and are attached to the reef. Each coral polyp is less than half an inch in diameter, but they live in colonies which Figure 1: A healthy coral reef system. can expand and take up the size of a small car. Reef building corals have a skeleton made of calcium carbonate, a mineral that is left behind when an individual coral dies. Another coral may settle on that spot and grow on top of the remaining skeleton. This allows a coral reef to grow a few centimeters each year, eventually reaching massive sizes. Coral reefs provide food and shelter for many plants, invertebrates, and fish. Coral reefs provide shelter for small fish, and small fish attract larger fish, which in turn attract large predators like sharks.

Sockeye, Chinook, and chum salmon preferentially spawn in upwelling groundwater, whereas coho prefer downwelling groundwater regions. Groundwater protects fish embryos from freezing during winter incubation and, after hatching, ice-free groundwater allows salmon to move both down and laterally into the hyporheic zone to absorb yolk sacs. Groundwater provides overwintering juvenile fish, such as rearing coho and Chinook salmon, refuge from ice and predators. Groundwater represents a valuable resource that influences salmon spawning behavior, incubation success, extent of overwintering habitat, and biodiversity, all of which can influence salmon sustainability. Recently, over 2,000 km2 of mine claims were staked in headwaters of the Nushagak and Kvichak river watersheds, which produce about 40% of all Bristol Bay sockeye salmon (1956-2010). The Pebble prospect, a 10.8 billion ton, low grade, potentially acid generating, copper deposit is located on the watershed divide of these rivers and represents mine claims closest to permitting. To assess groundwater prevalence and its relationship to salmon resources on mine claims, rivers within claims were surveyed for open ice-free water, 11 March 2011; open water was assumed indicative of groundwater upwelling.

    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Highest risk abandoned, lost and discarded fshing gear Eric Gilman1*, Michael Musyl2, Petri Suuronen3, Milani Chaloupka4, Saeid Gorgin5, Jono Wilson1,6 & Brandon Kuczenski6 Derelict abandoned, lost and discarded fshing gear have profound adverse efects. We assessed gear-specifc relative risks from derelict gear to rank-order fshing methods based on: derelict gear production rates, gear quantity indicators of catch weight and fshing grounds area, and adverse consequences from derelict gear. The latter accounted for ghost fshing, transfer of microplastics and toxins into food webs, spread of invasive alien species and harmful microalgae, habitat degradation, obstruction of navigation and in-use fshing gear, and coastal socioeconomic impacts. Globally, mitigating highest risk derelict gear from gillnet, tuna purse seine with fsh aggregating devices, and bottom trawl fsheries achieves maximum conservation gains. Locally, adopting controls following a sequential mitigation hierarchy and implementing efective monitoring, surveillance and enforcement systems are needed to curb derelict gear from these most problematic fsheries. Primary and synthesis research are priorities to improve future risk assessments, produce the frst robust estimate of global derelict gear quantity, and assess the performance of initiatives to manage derelict gear. Findings from this frst quantitative estimate of gear-specifc relative risks from derelict gear guide the allocation of resources to achieve the largest improvements from mitigating adverse efects of derelict gear from the world’s 4.6 million fshing vessels.
