E aggiunse un consiglio: “Vendi tutto e vai subito l’ultimo “the Tenor’s Passion”. • The Virginia Opera Booklist 2013-2014
The Virginia Opera Booklist 2013-2014 The Virginia Opera, founded in Norfolk in 1974, is the Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The company produces five mainstage productions including at the Edythe C. and Stanley L. Harrison Opera House in Norfolk, and in Richmond and Fairfax. Virginia Opera is the only opera company to perform a full season of opera in three separate mainstage venues and to reach more than 150,000 students and community members each year through its innovative Education and Community Outreach Program. The 2013-2014 season runs September 2013 until May 2014. Seasoned operagoers often do a little preparation to become more familiar with an opera before attending. Even when sung in English or with English supertitles, learning a little more will make it all the more enjoyable. So that you are more familiar with the music and stories before attending, this list includes a selection of music CDs, DVDs, scores, and books in NPL’s collections of and about this season’s Virginia Opera performances. Descriptions are from the company’s website and the NPL online catalog. For more selections for other special events and cultural heritage months, see prior years’ booklists on the Library’s webpage under the “Books & More” dropdown menu, click on “Reading Recommendations,” and on “Bibliographies.” Falstaff by Giuseppe Verde He’s rotund, old, lecherous and broke, yet Falstaff is one of the most endearing characters in literature. William Shakespeare’s aging knight comes to life in this effervescent Verdi gem, as his scheme to get rich by simultaneously wooing two wealthy married women backfires…badly.

  • MAURO BUDA - Baritone
MAURO BUDA - Baritone Italian baritone, Mauro Buda, began his career as an actor before studying singing with the soprano Carmen Lucchetti in Naples where he was born. He went on to study with Giuseppe Taddei in Rome and then joined the Royal College of Music in London as a post-graduate student under Graziella Sciutti. He made his professional debut in LA CECCHINA, OSSIA LA BUONA FIGLIOLA by Piccinni with AsLiCo and afterwards returned to London to begin his international career. He began by concentrating on mainly eighteenth century music: works including L’OSTERIA DI MARECHIARO by Paisiello in Palermo; PRIMA LA MUSICA, POI LE PAROLE by Salieri in Lugano; LA SERVA PADRONA by Pergolesi in Aix-en-Provence; LE NOZZE DI FIGARO in London and LO FRATE ‘NNAMORATO by Pergolesi in Paris. His first Verdian role was in Liège: Il Conte di Luna IL TROVATORE, which was very well received. He went on to sing Germont LA TRAVIATA at Trieste; Enrico LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR for Welsh National Opera; Leporello DON GIOVANNI in Gstaadt alongside Thomas Allen; returned to Trieste for Belcore L’ELISIR D’AMORE; sang the title role of NABUCCO at Sassari; Sharpless MADAMA BUTTERFLY at Torre del Lago and performed MAESTRO DI CAPPELLA at Lugano. He sang Marcello LA BOHEME for the centenary of Teatro Regio di Torino under Daniel Oren and at Sassari sang both Michele IL TABARO and the title role of GIANNI SCHICCHI a role he also repeated for De Vlaamse Opera. He made his role debut as FALSTAFF at Politeama Greco di Lecce and then made another role debut, that of Scarpia TOSCA at Teatro Verdi di Trieste in the production by Bolognini.

  • La Traviata – World Renowned Cast LA Opera Season Opener Attended by Placido Domingo
< Back to previous page Home > Arts & Entertainment > Theatre | Region: United States > Southern California La Traviata – World Renowned Cast LA Opera Season Opener Attended by Placido Domingo By Ester Molayeme Sep 17, 2006 Special to The Epoch Times LOS ANGELES—Opening the 2006/07 Season of the LA Opera is the special presentation of Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, visually stunning, with the world renowned cast of Renée Fleming, Rolando Villazόn, and Renato Bruson. La Traviata marks LA Opera's first filming of the stage performance for DVD release by Decca. The sold-out Opening Night Gala on Saturday, September 9, 2006, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, was marked by spectacular elegance. Fashionably dressed celebrities walked on the Pavilion's red carpet under the bright, reflecting chandeliers. Receiving a warm welcome was the LA Opera's new music director, James Conlon, who was for over 25 years associated with the Metropolitan Opera, for 10 years as the Principal Conductor of the Paris Opera, and who appeared in many of the world's most important opera companies, such as La Scala, and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, among others. La Traviata is one of Verdi's most performed operas for its extraordinary arias filled with beautiful coloratura. Early in the performance we see the American soprano Renée Fleming shining as the beautiful, charming, and very vulnerable Violetta Valéry, who bears her soul to her new admirer, Alfredo Germont. SOPRANO: Renée Fleming stars in La Traviata as Violetta. (Andrew Eccles/Decca) In "Un di' felice eterea" Alfredo declares his love for Violetta with touching sincerity.

  • Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera
Verdi’s Un ballo in Maschera - A survey of the studio and selected live recordings by Ralph Moore Given the popularity of Un ballo in maschera, it is surprising how relatively few studio recordings it has received: only a dozen, considered below. I have added to those, for their worth and interest, five live radio broadcasts and two recordings of live performances. The most recent was recorded twenty-five years ago. I have excluded any not sung in Italian. It is performed and recorded under two guises: its original version, narrating the assassination of Gustavus III of Sweden and, recast to avoid the spectacle of a monarch being assassinated on stage, its adaptation under pressure from the Roman censors to a new location in Boston, Massachusetts, with the characters’ names changed accordingly; thus Gustavus rather absurdly becomes Riccardo, Earl of Warwick, governor of Boston during the British colonial period. Modern stage productions tend to revert to the Swedish setting but the only recordings below to do so are Karajan’s in 1989 and the live production with Pavarotti in Vienna in 1986. It is expertly structured, paced and balanced – close to flawless as operas go and nowhere as far- fetched in the action or as unbelievable in motivation as some others, as long as you make allowance for a bit of jiggery-pokery to do with fortune-telling and magic herbs. Its trio of main characters are credible and sympathetic; Riccardo/Gustavo is a likeable tenor-hero whose character is portrayed in some depth; he evinces the usual romantic ardour but also a sense of humour; Amelia is passionate and principled without being sentimentalised; Renato/Anckarström is not the vengeful monster of the type we see in Don Carlo in La forza del destino but a man wracked and tormented by the betrayal of his wife and best friend.
