The origin of this thesis is, like many others before it, born from a sense of disjuncture between what I heard about something, and what I experienced of it. The ‘something’ in question is what is increasingly, and I believe somewhat erroneously, termed as ‘new audio culture’. By this I refer to all scholarly and popular talk and activity concerning iPods, MP3s, headphones, and podcasts: everything which we may understand as being tethered to an older history of audio-media, yet which is more often defined almost exclusively by its digital parameters. -

Blake Wilson Department of Criminal Justice, California State University, Stanislaus, USA Abstract: From Buñuel and Dali’s Un Chien Andalou to recent works by Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, the cinematic destruction of the eye has become iconic due to its striking effect upon film spectators’ visceral experiences as well as its ability to influence their symbolic or fetishistic desires. By exploiting the natural discomfort and disgust produced by these types of images and then situating them within an aesthetic and psychoanalytic framework, Refn and other filmmakers provide a visual showcase for a unique type of cinematic violence, one which demands that viewers reappraise the value of their own eyes as well as the values which reflect social attitudes towards law enforcement, crime, and justice. The Old Radio Times The Official Publication of the Old-Time Radio Researchers May/June 2012 www.otrr.org 2256 Subscribers Number No. 61 Inner Sanctum Mysteries: The Existing Episodes by Martin Grams, Jr. Known for its signature opening, a creaking door, Raymond the host invited listeners in for a weekly half-hour fright fest of murder and madness. Werewolves, vampires, creeping vines, walking corpses, dark stormy nights, haunted houses, black cats, vengeful ancestors and even ghosts of gangsters roamed the airwaves. For eleven seasons this horror program frightened listeners and today, remains a popular collector’s item for fans of old-time radio. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, episodes of Inner Sanctum Mystery originated from transcription discs, transferred to a feasible listening format, courtesy of a number of OTR vendors. The shows were also licensed and commercially released through companies like METACOM (doing business as Adventures in Cassettes) and Radio Spirits. About ten years ago, when the mp3 format became a standard for the casual collector (serious collectors still prefer CD and reel to reel format), episodes of Inner Sanctum market will kill off any chance of recouping Mystery began popping up all over the internet their investment. Crime Museum
Coordinates: 51°30′10″N 0°7′27″W Crime Museum The Crime Museum is a collection of criminal memorabilia kept at New Scotland Yard, headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service in London, England. Known as the Black Museum until the early 21st century, the museum came into existence at Scotland Yard sometime in 1874, arising out of the collection of prisoners' property gathered as a result of the Forfeiture Act 1870 and intended as an aid to the police in their study of crime and criminals. Initially unofficial, it had become an official if private museum by 1875, with a police inspector and a police constable assigned to official duty there. A Chronological Study of Experiential Education in the American History Museum. Doctor of Education (Curriculum & Instruction), December 2007, 248 pp., references, 397 titles. This study traced the evolution of experiential education in American history museums from 1787 to 2007. Because of a decline in attendance, museum educators need to identify best practices to draw and retain audiences. I used 16 museology and history journals, books, and archives of museums prominent for using the method. I also interviewed 15 museum educators who employ experiential learning, one master interpreter of the National Park Service, and an independent museum exhibit developer. Experiential education involves doing with hands touching physical materials. Four minor questions concerned antecedents of experiential learning, reasons to invest in the method, the influence of social context, and cultural pluralism. Next is a review of the theorists whose works support experiential learning: Dewey, Piaget, Vygotsky, Lewin, Bruner, Eisner, Hein, and David Kolb plus master parks interpreter Freeman Tilden. The 8 characteristics they support include prior experiences, physical action, interaction with the environment, use of the senses, emotion, social relationships, and personal meaning.
