E-mail: [email protected] Received:October 1, 2012; Revised received: January 31, 2013; Accepted:February 25, 2013 Abstract: Fish fauna of the river Ganga from Gangotri to Kanpur consisted of 140 fish species from 9 orders and 25 families; 63 fish species from 6 orders and 12 families in the mountain section (MS), while 122 species from 9 orders and 25 families in the Plains section (PS) of Upper Ganga. Cypriniformes and Cyprinidae were most species rich order and family in both sections. Forty six fish species primarily Cypriniformes and Siluriformes are common to both sections, only 17 in MS and 76 in PS. Orders Tetradontiformes, Osteoglossiformes and Clupeiformes were present in PS only. The taxonomic richness in the MS was low compared to PS. Probably motility and physiological requirements in respect of tolerance for temperature restrict faunal elements. A Consortium of 7 Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has been given the responsibility of preparing Ganga River Basin Environment Management Plan (GRB EMP) by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), GOI, New Delhi. Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) has been signed between 7 IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and MoEF for this purpose on July 6, 2010.     Brief Summary of the Project The Government of Uttarakhand has taken up programme for up-gradation and improvement of State Highways. Uttarakhand Public Works Department (UKPWD) has been entrusted with the assignment of Preparation of Feasibility study and Detailed Project Report for selected corridors of State Highways in Uttarakhand under Uttarakhand State Highway Improvement Project (USHIP). Public works Department plans to develop hilly state highway roads to intermediate lane facility in a sound technical and most economical manner, taking into consideration the environment and social aspects of the area, quality audit and safety audit requirement in design and to carry out through the financial analysis for the implementation. UKPWD has appointed M/s SM Consultants as consultant for carrying out the feasibility study and preparation of detailed project report of three state project highways under Uttarakhand State Highway Improvement Project Package 3. Uttarkashi Ghansali Tilwara Motor road (SH 15; Length: 166.730 km) is one of the state highways which is proposed for the improvement and upgradation from single lane to intermediate lane standards. NEED OF THE PROJECT The project area lies in Garhwal Region (Division) of Uttarakhand having divisional head quarter at Pauri, covering the districts of Uttarakashi, Tehri, Chamoli and Pauri. Project roads are connecting Divisional and Districts head quarters providing outreach to the local administration for the people of the area and vice-versa and access to the people to main markets of major towns. Four famous pilgrimages centres, Gangotri, Yamnotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath known as Chardham are situated at high altitude in Uttarakashi and Chamoli districts.

The day is scheduled for visiting the next Chardham destination of Uttarakhand- Gangotri. It is advisable that you visit the Gangotri temple, right from the helipad. The temple is located at a distance of 22 km from here which will be cover by cab. Arrive at the temple around 50 minutes later. After Darshan at Gangotri temple, get transferred to your hotel in the afternoon.
