The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting: such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to be nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd." -- Alexis de Tocqueville [Alexis Charles Henri Maurice Clerel, le Comte de Tocqueville] (1805-1859) French historian Read the Prophets & PRAY WITHOUT CEASING! Syrian official news agency SANA said Syria’s air defenses confronted “Israeli aggression” near the city. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The Israel Defense Forces did not immediately comment on the late-night strikes, in accordance with its policy to neither confirm nor deny its operations in Syria, save for those in retaliation for an attack from the country. The IDF has launched hundreds of strikes in Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011 against moves by Iran to establish a permanent military presence in the country and efforts to transport advanced, game-changing weapons to terrorist groups in the region, principally Hezbollah. Friday’s strikes appeared to be the first such attacks since US President Joe Biden took office on Wednesday. The Biden administration is expected to take a more conciliatory approach to Iran than former president Donald Trump. Tensions climbed ahead of the transition as the Trump administration and Iran traded threats and made accusations, and Iran carried out another significant breach of the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal it signed with world powers. Israeli officials have also issued threats against Iran in recent weeks and warned against the US returning to the nuclear deal. Earlier this month, massive Israeli airstrikes targeted a number of sites in Syria near the Iraq border, an area with a major Iranian military presence that is believed to be used by Tehran to move weapons throughout the region, Syrian media reported. The strikes, which reportedly targeted more than 15 Iran-linked facilities, were the fourth reported attack by Israel against Iranian targets in Syria in weeks, a significant increase from the normal rate of such strikes. Unverified reports said 57 fighters were killed. A senior US intelligence official with knowledge of the attack told the Associated Press that the airstrikes were carried out with intelligence provided by the United States and targeted a series of warehouses in Syria that were being used as a part of the pipeline to store and stage Iranian weapons. Last month, a series of airstrikes attributed to Israel hit four weapons manufacturing facilities near the town of Masyaf, also in the area of Hama https://www.timesofisrael.com/syrian-media-reports-israeli-airstrikes-near-western-city-of-hama/ Graffiti calling to kill Arab bus drivers spray-painted in West Bank settlement Messages scrawled in Modiin Illit also include warning that ‘the damage won’t stop’ until bus company stops employing ‘terrorists’ By TOI staff Today, 6:31 pm Graffiti reading "kill Arab drivers" spray-painted on a wall in the West Bank settlement of Modiin Illit, on January 21, 2021. (Courtesy) Graffiti calling for the murder of Arab bus drivers was spray-painted early Thursday in the ultra-Orthodox settlement of Modiin Illit. “Kill Arab drivers,” the graffiti said. Other graffiti found in the West Bank city warned “the damage won’t stop” until the Kavim bus company stops employing “terrorists.” The word “revenge” was also spray-painted on the back of the bus. It wasn’t clear what this referred to, but the graffiti came amid ongoing protests over the death of a 16-year-old settler in a car crash while fleeing police, after he and his friends allegedly threw rocks at Palestinians. כתובות נאצה רוססו נגד נהגי אוטובוס ערבים במודיעין עי לית. בין הכתובות – קריאה carmeldangor pic.twitter.com/bNVGEjw2izלרצח @ kann_news) January 21, 2021@) כאן חדשות — Police said they opened an investigation into the graffiti. “The writing on the wall is clearer than ever. The day isn’t far in which drivers will be harmed and it doesn’t matter what sector they’re from,” the bus union said in a statement, according to the Walla news site. The union also called on authorities to protect bus drivers and apprehend those responsible for the graffiti. There have been several assaults on Arab Israeli and Palestinian bus drivers in the West Bank in recent years, including a 2018 incident in Modiin Illit that a court later ruled was road rage. https://www.timesofisrael.com/graffiti-calling- to-kill-arab-bus-drivers-spray-painted-in-west-bank-settlement/ Earthquake rattles Cyprus, felt in Israel Geological Survey says shock's epicenter located 224 kilometers from Nahariya; Ynet users report feeling the tremor across the country, including in Nahariya, Haifa and Jerusalem Reuters, Ahiya Raved | Published: 01.21.21 , 18:17 An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.3 rattled Cyprus on Thursday, with the shock being felt in Israel. The quake was also felt during a live debate in the Cypriot parliament, dealing with the country's annual budget. Documentation from the parliament plenum shows the camera shaking up and down, after which some of the legislators left the plenum. The discussion resumed shortly. Earthquake hits during Cypriot parliament session There were no immediate reports of damage. Cyprus is an earthquake-prone zone, but strong tremors are not common.
