Syrian official news agency SANA said Syria’s air defenses confronted “Israeli aggression” near the city. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The Israel Defense Forces did not immediately comment on the late-night strikes, in accordance with its policy to neither confirm nor deny its operations in Syria, save for those in retaliation for an attack from the country. The IDF has launched hundreds of strikes in Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011 against moves by Iran to establish a permanent military presence in the country and efforts to transport advanced, game-changing weapons to terrorist groups in the region, principally Hezbollah. Friday’s strikes appeared to be the first such attacks since US President Joe Biden took office on Wednesday. The Biden administration is expected to take a more conciliatory approach to Iran than former president Donald Trump. Graffiti calling for the murder of Arab bus drivers was spray-painted early Thursday in the ultra-Orthodox settlement of Modiin Illit. “Kill Arab drivers,” the graffiti said. Other graffiti found in the West Bank city warned “the damage won’t stop” until the Kavim bus company stops employing “terrorists.” The word “revenge” was also spray-painted on the back of the bus. Clashes broke out between police and rioters opposed to coronavirus lockdown restrictions in the predominantly ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak overnight Thursday-Friday, after a mob in the city injured a police officer on patrol. The demonstrations were condemned by leaders from across the political spectrum, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who vowed to act with a “heavy hand” against those who violated lockdown rules and assaulted police. At least six people were arrested for disturbing public order. They were held for questioning and will have a hearing in Tel Aviv on Friday on extending their detention. The skirmishes began Thursday night, continued into the predawn hours of Friday morning and took place in several parts of the city. The clashes began when dozens of rioters attacked two police officers on patrol in a vehicle in the city, lightly injuring a female police officer. The mob smashed the car’s windows, slashed its tires, pelted it with stones and tried to open its doors. One of the attackers appeared to run off with a bag snatched from inside the vehicle. The officers were traveling in an unmarked car and some reports identified them as detectives. It was not immediately clear if they were wearing police uniforms during the incident. The crowd had gathered as part of a protest against the closure of a yeshiva, or religious school, in the city that had opened in violation of the lockdown restrictions. Around an hour after the initial attack, a force from the Yasam special police unit raided a yeshiva in the city, apparently the same school involved in the earlier incident. The entrance of the Yasam officers sparked widespread disturbances in the city, with some residents blocking roads and burning trash bins and tires. Some Bnei Brak residents called police officers “Nazis” and officers used riot dispersal methods including flash grenades. Army Radio began its broadcast in 1950 and is considered one of Israel's most prominent and important radio stations, among other things, due to being where many of Israel's most noteworthy journalists, artists and creators began their career. The Defense Ministry stated that “an inter-ministerial team will be set up, headed by Defense Ministry Director-General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Eshel who will devise a plan to privatize or shutter the station." The ministry's announcement claimed that the decision to separate the long-running station from the army was made “due to the desire to disconnect the defense establishment and the IDF from the activities of an independent radio station... as well as the need to separate between the service of IDF soldiers and the activities of a media outlet in which uniformed soldiers are dabbling in political content." The decision, which was made on the recommendation of the chief of staff, is a matter of values and not of budget. Free media in Israel is extremely important, and I will continue to defend it and ensure its independence, but the existence of a military station in the IDF is unreasonable at this time,” said the defense minister.

“I have decided that uniformed soldiers will not engage in politics in any position. This is unacceptable and contradicts the IDF's values, the [station’s] obligatory integrity and its proper conduct. I appreciate the station and its contribution to Israeli media, and to the variety of opinions and voices in the media. It would be right to find another channel for its continued activity,” added Gantz. The decision to go through with the move will be left to the next defense minister, due to the dissolution of the government and the upcoming March elections. Kochavi, however, is expected to demand the decision be carried out and the station’s affiliation with the army removed, reasoning that “the station should not be part of the IDF because it isn’t right and borderline immoral.” Kochavi’s predecessor, Gadi Eisenkot, also worked to disconnect the station from the military during his time as chief of staff, though his recommendation was vehemently shot down by then-defense minister Avigdor Liberman. Two weeks after beginning to administer the second dose, Ichilov said that the number of people experiencing side effects increased from after the first injection, mirroring the findings of other studies on Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine. Out of a sample of 1,735 medical workers, the hospital said nearly 37 percent of those vaccinated felt side effects. Of those who did, the most common was light pain in the injection area, which was reported by 51%. Another 32% said they felt localized pain that limited their movement, while 11% reported slight swelling, 5% localized redness and 1.5% paresthesia in the area of the infection. The hospital said just under 97% of those who reported side effects didn’t contact a doctor and only 0.28% were taken to an emergency room. It also said that over 95% didn’t experience any allergic reaction and of those who did only 1.23% went to the ER, adding that 86% of those included in the study didn’t take a sick day from work after receiving the vaccine. She said pregnant women were at high risk because of the variant. Her warning came two days after the Health Ministry advised pregnant women to get the coronavirus vaccine after a number of women expecting a baby fell seriously ill, with several babies delivered prematurely via Caesarean section due to life-threatening risks to the mothers and the children. The British strain of the coronavirus is believed to be more infectious, though not considered more deadly. Coronavirus czar Nachman Ash told ministers Tuesday that the variant accounts for 30-40 percent of current infections and will become the dominant strain in Israel within weeks. In the interview, Alroy-Preis said the British variant was also fueling high infection rates among the ultra-Orthodox. “There is very high contagion in the ultra-Orthodox community. Part of this is from the British variant… It began there more, and now it is spreading. It started there… And it’s much more contagious,” she said. Asked about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s pledge to reopen cultural venues and live entertainment in two weeks, Alroy-Preis said the announcement was not coordinated with her, but may have been discussed with other health officials. The National Insurance Institute’s annual report, published after a three-month delay, recorded an overall drop in median income — the criterion for measuring standard of living — of 22.7 percent over 2020. Such a drop has not been seen in Israel since 2001 during an economic slowdown caused by the Second Intifada. The average disposable income, often seen as a measure of the economy’s health, fell by 4.4% while in recent years it has risen by around 3%-4% each year. The biggest losses were seen among middle- income families, the report said, with those in the “middle class bracket” seeing disposable income drop by up to 7%. The main victims of the virus crisis, the report found, were working families that saw their jobs disappear or their salaries cut, single-parent families, and young families. According to the report, the decline in the standard of living resulted in a lowering of the poverty line, defined in relation to median income, to NIS 2,403 per person each month. As a result, the total number of people defined as living in poverty dropped slightly to 1,980,309, compared to more than 2 million people in 2019; 907,279 of them were children, the report said. But the authors of the report made clear that the actual number of people living without sufficient funds to pay for basic needs has gone up. “The decline in the poverty line itself is an exceptional phenomenon that occurs only during severe recessions,” the report said. “When you calculate the incidence of poverty according to the poverty line of 2019, you [see] that poverty has increased.” With a small rise in income gaps, the data placed Israel at 10% higher on the Gini index of income inequality than the OECD average. One of Israel’s out-spoken anti-vaccination coercion activists has launched a new political party that he believes could cross the threshold in the 2021 election and “help make Israel a healthier country.” Dr. Arieh Avni has founded the “Rapeh” Party, which means “heal” in English. Avni formerly served as a doctor with the Clalit health fund, but was fired for unknown reasons in 2000 and, since then, has been running a private, holistic medical clinic. [He was fired most likely because he didn’t toe the line. Working for the big healthcare systems is a real hazard because the idea of freedom of thought and independent practice decision making doesn’t exist there. You follow an algorithm whether it fits your patient or not. They lost weight in similar amounts, but those who ate the adapted “green” version, featuring less meat, more plant products, and lots of green tea, saw particular benefits in their liver. “Even though the Mediterranean Diet and the Green Mediterranean Diet led to equal weight loss overall, fat loss in the liver was doubled among those who had the green diet,” Shai told The Times of Israel. “The liver is so important for general human health, and fatty liver disease has wide implications, but there’s a lack of drug treatments and a lack of dietary protocol beyond general weight loss, which makes this finding important.” The modified diet aims for high levels of polyphenols, organic compounds produced by plants, seemingly to protect themselves from stress.

The study conducted by Shai, professor at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba and an adjunct professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, was recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Gut. Several Harvard scholars were involved in the study. One of the items in the diet is an aquatic plant called mankai which an Israeli company, Hinoman, is marketing as a superfood. Shai is an advisor to the company. An estimated 20 percent to 35% of adults have fatty liver disease, a condition which doctors say increases the risk of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions, as well as decreased gut microbiome diversity and microbial imbalance. But no drug is currently available and the only intervention is weight loss and curtailing of alcohol consumption.

The diet is rich in vegetables, includes a daily intake of walnuts (28 grams), and less meat than a regular Mediterranean diet. It is enriched with green items including three to four cups of green tea per day and 100 grams of a mankai green shake. World’s largest Holocaust memorial planned for Ukraine’s Babyn Yar ravine Covering 370 acres, site of central ‘Holocaust by bullets’ massacre will become one of world’s largest commemorations for Jewish genocide By Matt Lebovic Today, 6:20 pm Reversing plans to build one central museum at the site of the Holocaust’s largest open-air massacre, the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center (BYHMC) announced plans on January 21 to construct 12 buildings across 370-acres of the filled-in Kyiv ravine where over 100,000 people were slaughtered during World War II. On September 29 and 30, 1941, German Nazis and Ukrainian collaborators murdered 33,771 Jews at “Grandmother’s Ravine” on the edge of Ukraine’s capital. An additional 70,000 people were murdered at Babyn Yar during the next three years, including Jews, Ukrainian resisters, Roma, and disabled people.

By way of comparison, Israel’s Yad Vashem campus is about one-eighth the size of the complex planned for Kyiv. One of the new museums will memorialize the “Holocaust by Bullets” in which 1.5 million Jews were murdered across Ukraine and Eastern Europe. During this initial phase of the genocide, German “Einsatzgruppen” units partnered with local collaborators to murder Jews close to where they lived. In addition to several museum buildings, the plan calls for a structure depicting the names of victims and a “religious/spiritual center” complete with a synagogue, church and mosque. There will also be research and education centers on-site. As chair of the BYHMC supervisory board, Israeli human rights icon Natan Sharansky knows first-hand about the suppression of Holocaust memory. Growing up in Soviet-era Ukraine, Sharansky learned nothing about the events at Babyn Yar. “The concept which was presented is both very interesting and amazing,” said Sharansky. “It demonstrates how the museum and educational center will not only both be high quality, but at the same time different from many other Holocaust centers. As such, it will help fill a vacuum in the field of Holocaust studies.” Memorial designers are planning 15 themed sites related to where the massacre took place and the subsequent erasures of memory. The points will be connected by a winding path evocative of the ravine system’s former topography. “When you visit Babyn Yar, the most powerful spots are from where you can actually see raw ravines, very similar to those where the shootings took place which were filled-in [with industrial waste] during the Soviet era,” said Khrzhanovsky. “By using the geography and topography of the area, we are able to create a physical and emotional journey for visitors,” said the film director.

The 1941 German “ ction” at the ravine was the first open-air massacre to take place in a European capital. Thousands of Ukrainians observed the victims being herded to the ravine or participated in the massacre as guards, drivers, cooks, cleaners and other roles, as documented by Father Patrick Desbois. ‘The quiet of Babyn Yar’ As with most large-scale Holocaust memorial projects, not everyone agrees with the plan. “For me, the power and importance of sights of such painful memory and heritage are in their authenticity and raw state,” said Jonny Daniels, founder and president of the Holocaust memory organization From the Depths, based in Poland. In the past, Daniels has criticized what he sees as the “over-development” of Holocaust killing sites, including construction at Sobibor in Poland. “Whilst it’s obviously so important to build memorials, I’m worried about overshadowing them with monuments, places of worship and buildings,” Daniels told The Times of Israel. “For me, the quiet of Babyn Yar is what affects me most,” said Daniels.

The BYHMC has been conducting research into the massacre for several years. So far, 20,000 previously unknown names of victims have been recovered and verified. For the first time, scientists pin-pointed the relatively small area — approximately 500 feet in length — of the 1941 shootings and mass grave. “It is important to understand that we absolutely regard Babyn Yar as a sacred space,” said Khrzhanovsky. “This characterizes our whole approach.” According to Khrzhanovsky, construction will not take place where the killings occurred. Some buildings planned for the complex will be built on above-ground platforms in order to preserve archeological remains below, he added. The phenomenal government-watchdog group under the leadership of two experts on political and government corruption has been highlighting one largely overlooked aspect of the presidential race: the radical Left’s plan to violently challenge election results. After months of civil unrest – which includes aggravated assaults, looting of businesses, arson, cop-killings and crime – the anarchists and professional-protesters have witnessed police departments taking little, if any, action to curb the tide of crime committed by the Antifa and other groups.

That alone has emboldened these so-called protesters to create havoc in the United States. The anarchists plan is described in a document from the political group, the Transition Integrity Project. They released an ostensibly bi-partisan report, “Preventing a Disrupted Presidential Election.” The Transition Integrity Project (TIP) 1 was launched in late 2019 out of their concern that the Trump Administration may seek to manipulate, ignore, undermine or disrupt the 2020 presidential election and transition process. TIP takes no position on how Americans should cast their votes, or on the likely winner of the upcoming election; either major party candidate could prevail at the polls in November without resorting to “dirty tricks.” However, the administration of President Donald Trump has steadily undermined core norms of democracy and the rule of law and embraced numerous corrupt and authoritarian practices. This presents a profound challenge for those – from either party – who are committed to ensuring free and fair elections, peaceful transitions of power, and stable administrative continuity in the United States. The American people have the right to choose their next president without intimidation or interference in the normal electoral process. Believers in democracy and the rule of law should therefore be prepared to take action to ensure that the results of the 2020 presidential election reflect the will of the American people. Like many authoritarian leaders, President Trump has begun to lay the groundwork for potentially ignoring or disrupting the voting process, by claiming, for instance, that any mail-in ballots will be fraudulent and that his opponents will seek to have non-citizens vote through fraud. Similarly, he has frequently expressed the view that he is entitled to additional time in office and that his opponents are seeking to steal the election. According to Canada Free Press, the figure at the heart of the Transition Integrity Project is John Podesta, the senior strategist for the Democratic Party. Podesta was a top aide to presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, founder of the influential liberal think tank, the Center for American Progress, and chairman of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. For the electoral “war games” mapped out in the TIP report, Podesta played Joe Biden. “TIP is a collection of professional Democratic operatives and Republican ‘Never Trumpers,’” the Judicial Watch report notes. “Organizers and leaders include Georgetown law professor Rosa Brooks, Nils Gilman of the ‘independent’ Berggruen Institute in California,” and Podesta. Included in McConnell's proposal is a deal to begin the Senate proceedings in February so both sides can properly prepare for Trump's second impeachment trial, multiple people on the call said. Schumer could be open to the proposal, giving him more time to confirm President Joe Biden's Cabinet nominees. Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD), who was on the call, said his understanding was that McConnell briefed the conference before going to Schumer. "I think we know that we want to make sure that if the Democrats are going to do this impeachment that the president has a right to due process. And in order to do that, he has to prepare a case, they've got to set up the rules and so forth, so I think it'd be very difficult to start before then," Rounds said, according to NBC News. Sen.
