It was grand seeing some of the Senior Class of '57. As I am driving home from our 10 year class reunion, I think of them all and unconsciously turn on my car TV. The Robert (Bob) McFayden show is on the air, and he is singing his latest hit, "September Blues." His guest tonight is that famous dance team, Eugene Mclntyre and Marion Ingram. The last minutes of his show slip by, and he says his guest next week will be Betty Ann Treece, who has taken Minnie Pearle's place in the entertainment world. The eleveno'clock news flashes, and Leon Terry is the news commentator. He is noted for the "reel" story. He announces that the latest invention of Charles Mclnnis is the "Keep Awake Plan. " Students listen to his records to keep awake in class. My mind wanders from the TV program as I think of each grand classmate. Bobbie Darnell and Jeannette DeWitt are nurses for the Red Cross, now stationed in Germany. Sylvia Mabe is head of the Mabe Dairies, her associates being Betty Lou, Glenn, and Nancy LeeMabe. 1 Their slogan is "Try our products. They 'mabe good." Anne Wilson, EvaMae Pankey, and Jacqueline Williams are happy housewives. Sara Warner and Jeannette Wilson have opened a beauty shop in Norman. Larry McKay is a contractor. He is going to build Ellerbe's first five-story building. Helen Nelson is happy working in an orphanage. The children all call her "Mom." John Billy Raines has a successful tree farm. PerryMills, who is a forest ward- en, talked him into it. Irma Deaton is a high soprano for the Metropolitan Opera. Two people passed out from the vibrations the last time she sang. Wesley Anderson really slays them. He is now a wrestler. Jimmy Brigman has bought a cricket ranch in South Carolina. Everyone calls him Jimmy Cricket. Philip Hogan, a famous doctor, likes his job at the Mayo Clinic. Lester Haywood is noted for his "black dough." He owns a share in an oil field in Texas. Betty McFayden's latest book is "The Horn Blows at Dawn." Writing was always her joy. Paul Wilson, a mechanic, works for Eastern Airlines. Barbara Robbins is at Flora McDonald teaching math. Royle Wright is judge for Richmond County. He always makes the right decision. Willard Robson is Ellerbe's new patrolman. They call him "Red" because he never lets anyone run a red light. Larry Fulp makes a fine coach at the University of North Carolina. JaneCardwell is now teaching Home Economics at Ellerbe. Herstudents call her "Hardwell. " Tom Carter just wasn't satisfied until he became one of our Senators. Carolyn Chappell and Gail Grant are at the top as famous mountain climbers. They have just returned from the Alps. Ella Mae Hancock decided to make history as a stewardess for TWA. Jerry Cloninger is hitting hard for the Yankees. It was his home run that won the Series. James Mclnnis is now author of that famous comic strip "Dennis the Menace. " Jerry Vuncannon is working at the State College Experimental Station. John Williams is success- ful in New York as a lawyer. Benny Thompson is connected with A & P stores. Dave and Wayne Smith have formed the SBI, the Smith Bureau of Investigation with Jo Ann Rumley as their girl "Friday" secretary. Allen Culler is a dentist in Hollywood, California. Mr. Williams, our old English teacher, is studying the rock and roll language so he can under- stand his students. He says it's harder than English or Spanish. As for me, I am director of nursing at High Point Memorial. I hope my students under- stand me when I say there's no time like the present to make the future great. Her scholarly interests center on colonial Latin-American literature from New Spain, specifically the 17th century. Using the case of the Spanish colonies, she explores the birth of national identities in hybrid cultures. Another scholarly interest is the genre of Latin American colonialist narratives by modern-day female authors who situate their plots in the colonial period. In 2013, she published Llámenme «el mexicano»: Los almanaques y otras obras de Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora (Peter Lang,). She also has published short stories. (June 25, 2015) - The Fort Myers Miracle are pleased to announce that the 2016 Florida State League All-Star Game will be hosted at the newly renovated Hammond Stadium at the CenturyLink Sports Complex. The 55th All-Star Game in league history will be played for a sixth time in Fort Myers since 1985 and will be put on by the Miracle for a fifth time. A three-day All-Star break will commence on Friday, June 17 and end on Sunday, June 19. The game will be played on Saturday, June 18 at 7:05 p.m. “We are thrilled to show off this state-of-the art facility after the renovations and upgrades that have improved the fan experience the last two seasons,” said Miracle Chief Operating Officer Steve Gliner. “This event will be a great opportunity not just for local fans, but also for guests from around Florida and the United States to come and experience Fort Myers, Hammond Stadium and the beautiful Southwest Florida region.” Hammond Stadium and the CenturyLink Sports Complex underwent a two-phase, $48.5 million dollar renovation that began during the fall of 2013 and was completed prior to Minnesota Twins Spring Training in the spring of 2015.     Section on Statistical Graphics – JSM 2010 Mapping Batter Ability in Baseball Using Spatial Statistics Techniques Ben Baumer∗ Dana Draghicescuy Abstract In baseball, an area in or around the strike zone in which batters are more likely to hit the ball is called a hot zone. Scouting reports are often based on maps displaying a player's batting average in a discretized area of the strike zone. These reports are then used by both batting and pitching coaches to devise game strategies. This paper is motivated by the Sportvision PITCHf/x data, which provides accurate continuous location coordinates for individual pitches using high-speed cameras. Extended exploratory analyses show a number of interesting and challenging spatial features that we exploit in order to produce improved hot zone maps based on both parametric (kriging) and nonparametric (smoothing) techniques. Motivation In baseball, the concept of a hot zone (an area in or around the strike zone in which batters are more likely to hit the ball well) is common, going at least as far back the publication of Ted Williams's book, The Science of Hitting, in 1986 (Williams and Underwood 1986). Major television broadcasts commonly display a graphic in which the strike zone is divided into a 3×3 grid, and a batter's batting average in each cell in shown. Within the industry, several vendors produce more elaborate scouting reports based on this same principle of displaying a batter's batting average in a discretized area of the strike zone.
