Holly Ritchie Reverend Dr. Thomas McCulloch is a well-documented figure in Nova Scotia’s educational historiography. Despite this, his political activism and Presbyterian background has been largely overlooked. This thesis offers a re-interpretation of the well-known figure and the Pictou Academy’s fight for permeant pecuniary aid. Through examining Scotland’s early politico-religious history from the Reformation through the Covenanting crusades and into the first disruption of the Church of Scotland, this thesis demonstrates that the language of political disaffection was frequently expressed through the language of religion. As a result, this framework of response was exported with the Scottish diaspora to Nova Scotia, and used by McCulloch to stimulate a movement for equal consideration within the colony. Walker This dissertation is a study of the loyalist Church of England clergy in the American Revolution. By reconstructing the experience and identity of this largely-misunderstood group, it sheds light on the relationship between church and empire, the role of religious pluralism and toleration in the American Revolution, the dynamics of loyalist politics, and the religious impact of the American Revolution on Britain. It is based primarily on the loyalist clergy’s own correspondence and writings, the records of the American Loyalist Claims Commission, and the archives of the SPG (the Church of England’s missionary arm). The study focuses on the New England and Mid-Atlantic colonies, where Anglicans formed a religious minority and where their clergy were overwhelmingly loyalist. It begins with the founding of the SPG in 1701 and its first forays into America. It then examines the state of religious pluralism and toleration in New England, the polarising contest over the proposed creation of an American bishop after the Seven Years’ War, and the role of the loyalist clergy in the Revolutionary War itself, focusing particularly on conflicts occasioned by the Anglican liturgy and Book of Common Prayer. -

Dean of Ontario and Rector for St. George’s Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario The Bishop of Ontario is seeking to appoint the Dean of Ontario and Rector for St. George’s Cathedral in Kingston, Ontario. Founded in 1792, St. George’s is the oldest institution in Kingston and the oldest Anglican parish in Ontario. It is significant for its association with the development of the Anglican Church in Ontario, and has played a role in the religious lives of many Kingstonians. St. George’s is located in the historic heart of the City of Kingston—the largest regional centre in eastern Ontario between and Toronto and Ottawa. The city is home to almost 124,000 permanent residents as well as a significant number of students who attend Queen’s University, The Royal Military College and St. Lawrence College. These three educational institutions are significant sources of employment along with Canadian Forces Base Kingston and the cities health care institutions. A centre of recreational and cultural activities, Kingston draws many tourists each year with about 5000 of these visiting St. George’s Cathedral. The City is also a major centre for fresh water sailing, has a significant art gallery at Queen’s University, many smaller galleries, over twenty museums, several active theatrical companies, and many choirs and instrumental groups, including a very good symphony orchestra. St. George’s seeks to be one of the great cathedrals in the Anglican Church of Canada and a welcoming and influential parish church in the Diocese of Ontario. An Anglican – Lutheran Cycle of Prayer July – September 2019 Introduction The Joint Anglican-Lutheran Commission has designed this cycle for use in Canadian Anglican and Lutheran congregations and communities in Sunday liturgies throughout the year. For each Sunday, there are intentions for specific dioceses/synods/groups in both The Anglican Church of Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. One of the characteristics of the Christian community throughout the ages has been our commitment to pray for the whole world but especially for our Christian sisters and brothers in churches closely linked to our own. Anglicans and Lutherans in Canada are accustomed to praying for the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran World Federation, so it is appropriate for us to pray for our immediate Anglican and Lutheran neighbours. Prayer cycles can be overwhelming and ‘crowded’ pieces of liturgies. Care needs to be exercised in setting a context – we are intentionally, as churches in ‘full communion’, holding each other in prayer – some words of explanation may be needed to set this cycle of prayer in context. Merit and Service were to be the conditions for admission to this Order as opposed to most admissions to the Garter and Thistle being because of birth and nobility. The Order was founded in 1399 and probably took its name from the preparations for the knighthood ceremony where new knights would purify their inner souls by fasting, vigils and prayer, and then cleansing their body by immersing themselves in a bath. The Order was revived in 1725 as a military order with one class of Knights (K.B.). In 1815, the Order was enlarged to three classes: Knights Grand Cross (GCB) Knights Commander (KCB) Companions (CB) There was a civil division of the Knights Grand Cross while all others were to be military officers. In 1847, a civil division for all three classes was established with numbers set as follows: GCB 95 total 68 military 27 civil KCB 285 total 173 military 112 civil CB 1,498 total 943 military 555 civil The motto of the order is " Tria Juncta in Uno " (Three joined in one) which either refers to the three golden crowns within a golden circle worn on the badge, or the three crowns as symbolic of the Union of England, France and Scotland, or the Union of England, Scotland and Ireland or the Holy Trinity. -

Martyrology An Anglican Martyrology - for the British Isles 1 of 160 Martyrology Introduction The base text is the martyrology compiled by Fr. Hugh Feiss, OSB. Copyright © 2008 by the Monastery of the Ascension, Jerome, ID 83338 and available online at the website of the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. The calendars of each of the three Anglican churches of the British isles contain varied group commemorations, I suggest these entries are read only in the province where they are observed and have indicated that by the use of italics and brackets. However, people, particularly in the Church of England, are woefully ignorant of the history of the other Anglican churches of our islands and it would be good if all entries for the islands are used in each province. The Roman dates are also indicated where these vary from Anglican ones but not all those on the Roman Calendar have an entry. The introductions to the saints and celebrations in the Anglican calendars in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in Exciting Holiness, ed. Brother Tristam SSF, The Canterbury Press, 1997, have been added where a saint did not already appear in the martyrology. These have been adapted to indicate the place and date of death at the beginning, as is traditional at the reading of the martyrology. For the place of death I have generally relied on Wikipedia. For Irish, Welsh and Scottish celebrations not appearing in Exciting Holiness I have used the latest edition of Celebrating the Saints, Canterbury Press, 2004. These entries are generally longer than appear in martyrologies and probably need editing down even more than I have done if they are to be read liturgically.
