Among them is Magda Fuchs, who hopes for a fresh start in life after losing both husband and child. However, working for the police as a medical consultant, she is confronted with the underbelly of the dazzling city. Every day she sees the bitter fate of orphaned and starving children. When she realizes that these children are being sold into slavery as the police looks the other way, Magda decides to fight for those who have to live in the shadows. The doctor courageously takes on this world of corruption and crime, reclaiming her own life in the process. She receives support form the most unexpected of people – the abrasive social worker, Ina Dietrich, as well as the rather erratic but dedicated young police inspector, Kuno Mehring. Helene Sommerfeld’s novel unfolds as a plethora of strong women struggle to find their place in a world of extremes – Berlin in the Roar- ing Twenties. 4 dtv Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. Genial geschrieben und megaspannend!« Bernhard Aichner CHRISTOPH WORTBERG KEIN ENTKOMMEN KEIN Christoph Wortberg TRAUMA Trauma - No Escape Katja Sand’s first case WORTBERG CHRISTOPH THRILLER _ premium 368 pages February 2021 Into the abyss of the human soul A body has been found in a pond in a quarry close to Munich. Superintendent Katja Sand and her assistant Rudi Dorfmüller head the investigation. The victim was a low-ranking officer on a naval corvette – and he couldn’t swim. Is this suicide? But another corpse is soon discovered, this time in a refrigerator at a recycling facility. The detectives soon learn that both men had been clients of well-known psychoanalyst Dr. Alexander Hanning, who was helping them cope with personal trauma. The parallels between the two causes of death are also striking: in both instances, a severely traumatized man died under strange circumstances reminiscent of the catalyst event that had caused the initial trauma. Katja and Rudi dig deeper into the cases and stumble across a hushed-up scandal involving the Navy. The more gruesome the details they find, the greater the pressure they come under from their supervisors. And so, Katja is forced to do something reckless – in order to figure out the role Dr. Hanning might have played in these crimes, Katja becomes a patient at his practice, finding herself in mortal danger. 6 dtv Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. In brief episodes and crisp, emotional words, Helga Schubert tells the story of a century of German history - her own history, in an account that seamlessly combines fiction and truth. Lacing Up the Gloves: Women, Boxing and Modernity Irene Gammel Ryerson University, Toronto Abstract This article explores women’s early twentieth-century engagement with boxing as a means of expressing the fragmentations and contradictions of modern life. Equally drawn to and repelled by the visceral agonism of the sport, female artists and writers of the First World War and post- war era appropriated the boxer’s virile body in written and visual autobiographies, effectively breaching male territory and anticipating contemporary notions of female autonomy and self- realization. Whether by reversing the gaze of desire as a ringside spectator or inhabiting the physical sublime of boxing itself, artists such as Djuna Barnes, Vicki Baum, Mina Loy and Clara Bow enlisted the tropes, metaphors and physicality of boxing to fashion a new understanding of their evolving status and identity within a changing social milieu. At the same time, their corporeal and textual self-inscriptions were used to stage their own exclusion from the sport and the realm of male agency and power. Ultimately, while modernist women employ boxing to signal a radical break with the past, or a reinvention of self, they also use it to stage the violence and trauma of the era, aware of limits and vulnerabilities. Keywords: boxing, women, modernity, self-representation, gender 1 Lacing Up the Gloves: Women, Boxing and Modernity No man, even if he had earlier been the biggest Don Juan, still risks it in this day and age to approach a lady on the street. The reason: the woman is beginning to box! - German boxing promoter Walter Rothenburg, 19211 Following Spinoza, the body is regarded as neither a locus for a consciousness nor an organically determined entity; it is understood more in terms of what it can do, the things it can perform, the linkages it establishes, the transformations and becomings it undergoes, and the machinic connections it forms with other bodies, what it can link with, how it can proliferate its other capacities – a rare, affirmative understanding of the body.

Consuming Beauty in the Weimar Republic: A Discussion of Youth, Cosmetics, and Power in Vicki Baum's play Pariser Platz 13 (1930) Abstract Published in 1930, Vicki Baum’s play Pariser Platz 13: Eine Komödie aus dem Schönheitssalon engaged the readership with an unorthodox and thoroughly modern heroine: the successful owner of international beauty salons Helen Bross. Helen personified the wishes and dreams of Baum’s readers: Helen’s autonomy, both personal and financial, allowed her ot be an active consumer of modernity and its pleasures: travel, interaction with celebrities, and luxurious lodging.

  • The Hotel As a Translation Site: Place and Non-Place, Difference and Indifference Sherry Simon Concordia University
The Hotel as a Translation Site: Place and Non-place, Difference and Indifference Sherry Simon Concordia University abstract: The hotel is a translation site, a place of accelerated language trans actions. The Hotel Bristol in Vienna beloved of Joseph Roth, Cees Nooteboom’s Ritz in Barcelona, and Wes Anderson’s fictional Grand Budapest Hotel speak the language of community. By contrast, the Tokyo Park Hyatt in Sofia Coppola’s 2003 filmLost in Translation is more like a “nonplace” and aligns with weak, ineffective forms of trans lation, with apathy, and with cultural indifference. here does translation take place? Translators are often imagined as figures in motion. By dint of their multiple affiliations, they are considered marginal, even alienated, from a sense of home. But in fact, as becomes quickly evident when atten tionW is focused on space, interlingual exchange is anchored in specific sites which enable the work of translation and which are part of the everyday life of today’s citizens. By exploring translation sites—places that are shaped by language traffic, places where lan guages and histories meet—I want to foreground the importance of translation in public life. Translations open up routes of commerce and exchange, circulate stories, create the possibilities for coexistence on the streets. But to see the translational nature of objects and places is to be attentive to the shadows of other times and languages. Translation sites are varied in nature. Five broad types can be defined:Architectures of Memory define stratified memories, where one language history has been imposed upon another, where places are renamed or subjected to linguistic conversion.
