Winged helmets, winged feet

BUTCH WOOLFOLK As a top U-M sprinter from 1979-82, Woolfolk captured NCAA All-America honors with a sixth- place performance in the 200-meter dash in 1980 . A two-time Big Ten champion, Woolfolk’s personal bests of 10 36. (100m) and 20 .59 (200m) remain among the Wolverines’ top marks . On the gridiron, he set Wolverine records for most attempts (718) and most yards gained rushing (3,861), leading the team in rushing for three straight seasons, His runs of 92 and 89 yards are the longest and third longest in U-M history . Named Michigan’s Most Valuable Player in 1981, he also was named MVP in the 1981 Rose Bowl and Bluebonnet Bowl games . He was selected in the first round of the NFL draft by the . Woolfolk had a seven-year pro career with three teams: New York Giants, Oilers and Lions .

HARLAN HUCKLEBY A four-year letterman on the gridiron, Huckleby com- pleted his Wolverine career with 25 and 2,624 total rushing yards . The Wolverines compiled an impressive 38-8-2 record during Huckleby’s tenure (1975-78) and made three consecutive Rose Bowl appearances . After his graduation in 1979, he went on to play six seasons with the , scoring 13 career touchdowns . In one season with the U-M track team, Huckleby earned All-America honors after contributing to a third-place finish by the mile relay at the 1976 NCAA indoor meet at the Silverdome, helping Michigan to a 10th-place team finish . Huckleby also claimed a Big Ten title in the same event as the Wolverines swept the conference indoor and outdoor team trophies .

DESMOND HOWARD Winner of the 1991 Heisman Trophy, Howard’s acrobatic catches made him one of the most electrifying players ever to play the game . Howard became the first receiver in Big Ten history to lead the conference in scoring (90) as he set or tied five NCAA records and 12 single-season records . He finished his U-M tenure with 37 career touchdowns and 2,146 yards receiving as well as two 90+ kickoff returns for touchdowns and a 90+ punt return for a touchdown . He won the Heisman by the second largest margin of victory in the trophy’s history; his 640 first-place votes (85 percent) were the most ever for a Heisman winner . Nick Willis ran in his fourth Olympic Games for New Zealand, finishing as the oldest 1,500-meter medalist in the long history of the event at 33 years of age . He collected his second medal overall, and became the first Kiwi to earn multiple medals in the event . Nate Brannen competed for Team Canada for the third time in his Olympic career and made his first career Olympic final, while Jeff Porter represented Team U .S .A . for the second time in his career, once again reaching the semifinal stage .
