Williams, Hipness, Hybridity, and Neo-Bohemian Hip-Hop
HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora. -

00:00:00 Music Transition “Crown Ones” off the album Stepfather by People Under The Stairs 00:00:05 Oliver Wang Host Hello, I’m Oliver Wang. 00:00:07 Morgan Host And I’m Morgan Rhodes. You’re listening to Heat Rocks. Rhodes 00:00:09 Oliver Host Every episode we invite a guest to join us to talk about a heat rock, AKA an album that sizzles, but today we are going multimedia with a new series where we talk about music and movies. We’re calling it Music and Popcorn—shout-out to Morgan for coming up with that— and we’re kicking it off by taking a trip up north to the Santa Cruz boardwalk, and taking a creepy escalator down into Jordan Peele’s 2019 film, Us. 00:00:35 Music Music “I Got 5 On It (Tethered Mix)” off the album I Got 5 On It by Luniz. Slow, somewhat eerie instrumentals and vocalizations. 00:00:55 Oliver Host If someone in 2016 had asked for your opinion about Jordan Peele, you might be forgiven if you had first asked, “Wait, was he the tall guy or the short guy from Key and Peele?” [Morgan laughs.] Prior to his breakout debut film, Get Out, Peele was best known for his comedy skits, alongside partner Keegan Michael Key. But with Get Out, Peele showcased all manner of talents as a screenwriter and director by crafting one of the most lauded horror-slash-thriller films in recent years. In 2019, Peele was back with Us, a dark and at times darkly funny meditation on race, class, and equality, and the lethal shortcomings of voice-activated smart devices. -

Juwelen Hunger in Der Nacht Tschüss, Hochschulstadion!
Ausgabe 11 Februar 2009 gratis Cover Contest Winner Kron(e)juwelen Hunger in der Nacht Tschüss, Hochschulstadion! Mode made in Darmstadt Hörspiel mit Tornado Stoolgang Veranstaltungskalender Stadtkulturmagazin INHALTLICH_ 03 Hallo Darmstadt. Eher gut. -

Ralph Waldo Emerson and the Ever-Evolving Art of Self
RALPH WALDO EMERSON AND THE EVER-EVOLVING ART OF SELF-RELIANT READING BY THEODORE REND BARTON A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS English December 2012 Winston-Salem, North Carolina Approved by: Eric Wilson, Ph.D., Advisor Barry Maine, Ph.D., Chair Omaar Hena, Ph.D. My efforts and their results are dedicated to my grandmothers Irene Sauban and Jeanne Barton whose lives demonstrated the magnanimous effects of constant reading, and also to my brother William Barton who never hesitates to read from the text of the world. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project and I are indebted to innumerable people for their love, support, and patience. I will always have indefatigable gratitude for my time with Eric Wilson, and for his indelible influence on my intellectual development while at Wake Forest University and in London. It must be rare that a graduate student is given the opportunity to study with a mentor whom he truly admires and looks up to, and I am cognizant of how lucky I’ve been. Similarly, it’s difficult to express the extent of my appreciation for Omaar Hena, but it’s clear that Wake is unbelievably lucky to employ him for what is certain to be a ground breaking and distinguished career in post-colonial studies. I also must thank my Cal. State professors Chad Luck, Margaret Doane, Cynthia Cotter, and Julie Sophia Paegle for preparing me for the rigors of graduate school and for their encouragement. -

Venturing in the Slipstream
VENTURING IN THE SLIPSTREAM THE PLACES OF VAN MORRISON’S SONGWRITING Geoff Munns BA, MLitt, MEd (hons), PhD (University of New England) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Western Sydney University, October 2019. Statement of Authentication The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original except as acknowledged in the text. I hereby declare that I have not submitted this material, either in full or in part, for a degree at this or any other institution. .............................................................. Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts. -
Fame Attack : the Inflation of Celebrity and Its Consequences

All three identify celebrity as the response to the recognition of some sort of emotional defi cit in personal relationships and public life. Thus, briefl y, Articulation Dand the Culture of Display arise from the demand for social acknowledgement; Hero Worship and Narcissistic Idealization are rooted in a lack of self-esteem; and Religion, and its Decline in the West, refers to the erosion of organized religion and the collapse of conjoining moral integrity that provides a coherent sense of stability and order. 1 Supply-based accounts of celebrity infl ation highlight the issues of leadership and manipulation. They provide a top-down perspective that portrays the enlargement of celebrity to be the result of the combination of the acquisitive motives of celebrity impresarios, the gigantic expansion of channels of communication, especially print, fi lm, cable and satellite and the avaricious business interests of corporations. The PR-Media hub is analysed as the gatekeeper, employed by cultural impresarios and business executives, to ration exposure and stoke the fi res of public interest. -
