I have long been a fan of this band and wanted t know more. First off, it must be said that this is a history of not only the Jefferson Airplane, but Hot Tuna and The Jefferson Starship (and various solo projects) as well. Given the timeline, only about half of the book is, specifically, about the Airplane. Thats not a bad thing, but if you are only interested in the Airplane, it is a consideration.Theres a lot of interesting material here. The author is diligent in presenting first-hand information from the various subjects using a lot of direct quotes, many of which are contradictory which adds to the story. There are a lot of interesting details about the music, the songs, the business and, mostly, the interpersonal relationships. Its a bit of a soap opera and, if you, like me, tend to idolize certain people, its jarring to see all of their faults exposed. At some point, everyone comes across as a jerk. In the end, I was saddened by it all. For me, the music is what counts and the Jefferson Airplane remains a central pillar of my musical universe. I wonder if I was better off not knowing of the trials and tribulations of the failed relationships, bad feeling and tragedy (specifically that of Skip Spence). In the end, the book seemed to be, not a celebration of a seminal band, but a cautionary tale. Thats not what I was looking for. Got a Revolution! • Addio a Paul Kantner, “The Brain” Dei Jefferson Airplane

  • Music 262: Rock Music, History and Social Analysis, San Francisco Scene
Music 262: Rock Music, History and Social Analysis, San Francisco Scene [Music Playing on Piano] [Brian Ward]: So there’s another movement in rock n’ roll that happens that’s really related to folk rock and psychedelic rock and it happens in a specific region. This is in San Francisco in the early to later 1960s. This is around a neighborhood built at an intersection in San Francisco, the intersection of Haight and Ashbury. This is a growing sub-culture of young people in the United States commonly known today as hippies. They lived in these communes and a lot of them were starving artists or drop-outs, anti-establishment people. They all congregated in this one city at this one particular time. Along with this we have a large community of folk musicians. We have writers like Ken Kesey that are there. He’s leading these experiments with LSD known as the Acid Tests, also known as Happenings that were happening in San Francisco and all along the west coast. It’s estimated that there were 500 to 1500 bands in San Francisco alone during this period. A big thing about this hippie movement is the philosophy of existentialism. Existentialism is a philosophy that states if a person is totally responsible for their own life and through their experience and their own decision making process are able to come up with their own moral code and way of living. So what this creates is a lot of freedom and a way for them to speak to the older generation in a semi-intelligent way and say, “Look.

Are you done yet?” I’m thankful for friends, such as: Adam Suarez, Phillip Sitter, Brandon Roney, Robert Gayden and Zach Folken, who would periodically ask me “What’s your thesis about again?” That was a question that would unintentionally put me back on track. In terms of staying on task my thesis committee (mentioned elsewhere) was nothing short of a godsend. Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com Penn's Picks: Garage/Psych Volume 1 With the retro Psych/Garage trend in full effect, I thought it would be fun to kick off the inaugural Penn’s Pick Playlist with a look back to where it all began – the 1960s. Chances are that you’re already familiar with some of the more “mainstream” cuts of the era such as White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane), The End (The Doors) and Hurdy Gurdy Man (Donovan), but I’m going to take you down the rabbit hole to hear some lesser known gems that stand their own alongside their more mainstream contemporaries. Slip Inside This House (1967): 13th Floor Elevators You can’t mention the word psychedelic without mentioning the 13th Floor Elevators. Formed in Austin, Texas in 1965 and led by the Psych legend Roky Erickson, the Elevators were one of the first, and best, representatives of the genre. Slip Inside This House is a cut from their second album, Easter Everywhere, and stands to this day as one of the true, yet lesser known gems of the era. War & Peace (1969): Alexander “Skip” Spence Following his departure from the ill-fated Moby Grape (there’s a lesson to be learned from releasing too many singles at once!), Alexander “Skip” Spence went into the studio to cut his legendary Oar album just a number of months after being committed to Bellevue following his attempt to cut down his Grape bandmates with an axe while in a delusional state.
