Notes on the Performers Morning Program

Mahlon Balderston, organ, has a Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin College Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. and a Master of Arts degree from Iowa State University. He is Professor Emeritus The Unitarian Society, 1535 Santa Barbara St. of Santa Barbara City College, and is Music Director and organist at the Unitarian Society. Sonata I in B-minor, BWV 1014 J. S. Bach Barbara Coventry, violinist and violin teacher, attended NYC’s Manhattan (1685-1750) School of Music where she was a student of Raphael Bronstein. She was a member Adagio of the SB Symphony for eight years and was the founder of the Children’s Allegro Orchestra program of the Santa Barbara Music and Arts Conservatory, which she Andante ran for 10 years. She has a special love of children and has done much specialized Allegro study in that area, teaching a multitude of young violinists. After raising three Barbara Coventry, violin children who are all musicians, she is now enjoying the opportunity to play John Sonquist, piano chamber music herself. “Hai gia vinta la causa!” (from Le Nozze di Figaro) W.A. Mozart Andre Shillo, baritone, began his music education by studying saxophone in his (1756-1791) hometown of Lutsk, Western Ukraine. He began his vocal studies here in 1996 after performing in for the Santa Barbara Grand Company. He “Bella siccome un angelo” (from Don Pasquale) G. Donizetti studied for three years with Geraldine Decker in Ventura, and presently studies (1797-1848) with Val Underwood. He has been the recipient of competitive awards from the Music Club, SB Pillsbury Foundation, Leni Fe Bland Foundation, SBCC “You wrote the letter…” (from Eugene Onegin) P.I. Tchaikovsky scholarship and the John C. Profant Foundation for the Arts. He plans to continue (1840-1893) studying voice after his graduation from SBCC. “Song of the Flea” M.P. Mussorgsky John Sonquist, pianist, studied with the noted Hungarian teacher, Margit Varro in (1839-1881) , and with Glory Fisher as a member of her City College chamber music class. He is Professor Emeritus at UCSB. A 50-year chamber music veteran, he Andre Shillo, baritone serves on the advisory boards of the Ashland and Humboldt Chamber Music Val Underwood, piano Workshops and on the boards of the Santa Barbara Music Club and the Chamber Music Society of Santa Barbara. He is staff pianist for the Live Oak Unitarian- Universalist Congregation, and has served as rehearsal pianist for the Civic Light Sonatas all’epistola (“Church Sonatas”) W.A. Mozart Opera and the Grand Opera companies. He and singer Rebecca Wave have issued a (1756-1791) CD with his own arrangements of Yiddish songs. He performs regularly at the Sonata in C (Allegro), KV 328 Music Club, at local retirement communities, and for a variety of non-profit Sonata in E-flat (Andantino), KV 67 organizations. Sonata in F (Allegro con spirito), KV 224 Sonata in C (Allegro), KV 336 piano, studied with Reginal Stewart, Dora Zaslavsky and Val Underwood, Arminda Canteros. He has collaborated with principal members of the New York Mahlon Balderston, organ Philharmonic, Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Anapamu Chamber Players Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He studied voice with William Horne, Martial Singher and Jack Metz, and served as accompanist in the studios of some of the Emil Torick and Barbara Coventry, violins, Ervin Klinkon, cello and great singers of our time, including Rose Bampton, Martial Singher, George Dege Lowry, bass London and Lotte Lehman. He is a vocal instructor in the US and England.
