Left-libertarianism is not a new star on the sky of political philosophy, but it was through the recent publication of Peter Vallentyne and Hillel Steiner’s anthologies that it became clearly visible as a contemporary movement with distinct historical roots. “Left- libertarian theories of justice,” says Vallentyne, “hold that agents are full self-owners and that natural resources are owned in some egalitarian manner. Unlike most versions of egalitarianism, left-libertarianism endorses full self-ownership, and thus places specific limits on what others may do to one’s person without one’s permission. Unlike right- libertarianism, it holds that natural resources may be privately appropriated only with the permission of, or with a significant payment to, the members of society. Like right- libertarianism, left-libertarianism holds that the basic rights of individuals are ownership rights. Left-libertarianism is promising because it coherently underwrites both some demands of material equality and some limits on the permissible means of promoting this equality” (Vallentyne and Steiner (2000a), p 1; emphasis added). -

Cohen’s book brings together and elaborates on articles that he has written on self- ownership, on Marx’s theory of exploitation, and on the future of socialism. Although seven of the eleven chapters have been previously published (1977-1992), this is not merely a collection of articles. There is a superb introduction that gives an overview of how the chapters fit together and of their historical relation to each other. Most chapters have a new introduction and often a postscript or addendum that connect them with other chapters. And the four new chapters (on justice and market transactions, exploitation in Marx, the concept of self-ownership, and the plausibility of the thesis of self-ownership) are important contributions that round out and bring closure to many of the central issues. As always with Cohen, the writing is crystal clear, and full of compelling examples, deep insights, and powerful arguments. Cohen has long been recognized as one of the most important exponents of analytic Marxism. His innovative, rigorous, and exciting interpretations of Marx’s theories of history and of exploitation have had a major impact on Marxist scholarship. Starting in the mid-1970s he has increasingly turned his attention to normative political philosophy. As Cohen describes it, he was awakened from his “dogmatic socialist slumbers” by Nozick’s famous Wilt Chamberlain example in which people starting from a position of equality (or other favored patterned distribution) freely choose to pay to watch Wilt Chamberlain play, and the net result is inequality (or other unfavored pattern). -

On Original Appropriation Peter Vallentyne, University of Missouri-Columbia in Malcolm Murray, ed., Liberty, Games and Contracts: Jan Narveson and the Defence of Libertarianism (Aldershot: Ashgate Press, 2007), pp. 173-78 Libertarianism holds that agents initially fully own themselves. Lockean libertarianism further holds that agents have the moral power to acquire private property in external things as long as a Lockean Proviso—requiring that “enough and as good” be left for others—is satisfied. Radical right-libertarianism, on the other hand, holds that satisfaction of a Lockean Proviso is not necessary for the appropriation of unowned things. This is sometimes defended on the ground that the initial status of external resources as unowned precludes any role for a Lockean Proviso. I shall show that this is a bad argument. Although I would argue that satisfaction of a Lockean Proviso is indeed a necessary condition for the appropriation of unowned things, I shall not attempt to establish that here. My goal here is more modest: to rebut one argument against the Lockean Proviso. The Lockean Proviso can be interpreted in several different ways. Nozickean right- libertarianism interprets the proviso as requiring that no one be left worse off by the appropriation than she would be if the thing remained in common use.1 Equal share left- libertarianism2 interprets the Lockean Proviso as requiring that no one be worse off than she would be if no one appropriated more than an equal share of the competitive value (i.e., based on demand and supply) of initially unowned things. Equal opportunity (for wellbeing) left- libertarianism3 interprets the Lockean Proviso as requiring (roughly) that no one be worse off than she would be if no one appropriated more than is compatible with everyone having an equally valuable opportunity for wellbeing.4 I shall not here assume any particular version of the Lockean Proviso. -

Libertarianism Left and Right, the Lockean Proviso, and the Reformed Welfare State Steve Daskal Published in 2010 in Social Theory and Practice 36 (1): 21-43 http://www.pdcnet.org/collection/show?id=soctheorpract_2010_0036_0001_0021 _0043&file_type=pdf In the context of their response to Barbara Fried’s vigorous critique of left- libertarianism, Peter Vallentyne, Hillel Steiner, and Michael Otsuka offer a compelling reason for anyone with liberal egalitarian inclinations to take libertarianism seriously.1 As they see it, the dominant strand of liberal egalitarianism follows in the footsteps of Rawls and focuses on questions about how to organize the social institutions that divide the fruits of cooperation. In contrast, they point out that libertarian theorizing begins with an earlier question, that of how an individual or group of individuals can come to own the natural resources or artifacts used in the production of these fruits. Moreover, they contend that the answer to this question partly determines the appropriate division of the fruits of cooperation, or at least has the potential to do so. In its weakest form, this claim should be uncontroversial. Insofar as there are any natural rights at all, surely they must be taken into consideration in assessing the justice of whatever social institutions directly affect the realization or violation of those rights. More specifically, insofar as libertarian theorizing identifies natural rights of property ownership, social institutions related to the distribution of wealth must respect these rights in order to be fully just.2 For instance, suppose I have natural rights to all of the goods and resources in my possession, and no natural obligations to provide in any way for the needs of others. -

BARBARA H. FRIED Left-Libertarianism: A Review Essay I. INTRODUCTION Peter Vallentyne and Hillel Steiner's two-volume collection of historical and contemporary works on left-libertarianism formally marks the emergence over the past two decades of a theory of distributive justice that seeks to harness the premises of the libertarian right to the political agenda of the egalitarian left. Its proponents and sympathetic fellow travelers include (in addition to Vallentyne and Steiner) Philippe Van Parijs, Allan Gibbard, Michael Otsuka, Baruch Brody, and James Grunebaum, among others. Vallentyne and Steiner draw together a wealth of interesting material, intelligently situated in the excellent introductory essays and sum- maries provided by the editors. The first volume, The Origins of Left- Libertarianism, contains writings from a number of historical figures whom Vallentyne and Steiner correctly identify as intellectual forebears. In this group are John Locke, early agrarian radicals Thomas Paine and William Ogilvie, liberal socialists of the mid-nineteenth century includ- ing Hippolyte Colins, Leon Walras and Francois Huet, and left-liberal radical land reformers including J. S. Mill, (the early) Herbert Spencer, and, most famously, Henry George. A tiny lizard named Pete survived just three days in the ecosystem I had built for him in a clear plastic Tupperware® container. After capturing Pete in my backyard, I placed him in his new home and added sand, rocks, ants, and freshly plucked grass. I enhanced his new home with a small bowl of water so he would have a ―pool to swim in.‖ At that age, I truly believed Pete was living the good life— lizard paradise, complete with all the ants he could eat. The first day in his new home, Pete was distressed. Frantically searching for an escape, Pete darted around the plastic container desperate for a way out. I could not comprehend this. After all, why would Pete want to leave lizard paradise? The days went by and Pete deteriorated rapidly. The lizard paradise to me was more like a lizard jail to him. Pete wasn‘t eating, wasn‘t drinking, and wasn‘t moving at all. He began to lose body mass, his light brown skin wrinkling. Eventually, Pete passed away. Wiping the tears from my eyes, my grandfather explained why Pete did not flourish in his new home. The green of the grass had faded. The ants were busy tunneling a new home of their own in the sand, unavailable to the weakened Pete. I learned that Pete didn‘t need a pool to swim in, but fresh water, every day.
