IV RESUMEN En esta tesis se presentan los resultados surgidos de un detallado análisis palinoestratigráfico y palinofacial de las palinofloras halladas en la Formación Cañadón Asfalto. Los resultados obtenidos constituyen una valiosa herramienta para la compresión de la diversidad vegetal del Jurásico de Patagonia ya que este período marca un momento de cambio drástico en la composición y distribución de la flora mundial hacia el resto del Mesozoico. La información generada a partir de este trabajo representa una oportunidad única para enriquecer y fortalecer los esquemas bioestratigráficos, paleoecológicos y plaeoclimáticos regionales. La Formación Cañadón Asfalto posee los afloramientos más característicos en el depocentro Cerro Cóndor, valle medio del río Chubut. Sobreyace a la Formación Lonco Trapial (Jurásico Temprano) compuesta por vulcanitas mesosilícicas y es sucedida discordantemente por las sedimentitas y piroclastitas de la Formación Cañadón Calcáreo (Jurásico Tardío). Está formada por escasos estratos conglomerádicos, abundantes areniscas, pelitas, niveles de calizas biogénicas, tobas e intercalaciones basálticas. Para la presente tesis se describieron y muestrearon 3 perfiles, dos en la Quebrada Lahuincó (A y B) al sur de la localidad de Cerro Cóndor y otro al norte de la misma en el Cañadón Caracoles. Fueron identificados 72 taxones entre los cuales 25 corresponden a especies de esporas antoceratofitas (Anthocerotaceae), briófitas (Sphagnaceae) y traquéofitas (Marattiaceae, Cyatheaceae, Dicksoniaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Osmundaceae, Schizaeaceae y filicopsidas indiferenciadas), 41 especies de granos de polen principalmente de Coniferales (Araucariaceae, Cheirolepidiaceae, Podocarpaceae, Pinaceae y ¿Pinaceae-Taxodiaceae?) y en menor medida Pteridospermales (?Corystospermaceae, Caytoniaceae), además de algas clorófitas y charófitas y una especie de hongo. De ellas, 8 especies se citan por primera vez para Argentina. La palinoflora está ampliamente dominada por polen de Cheirolepidiaceae, seguido por polen de Araucariaceae y en menor proporción de Podocarpaceae, Pinaceae y Pteridospermales. Las esporas de briófitas y pteridófitas constituyen una porción menor V y las algas, son relevantes en algunos niveles en la base de la unidad (Perfil Cañadón Lahuincó “A”). El análisis de las palinofacies en ambos perfiles sugiere una posición próxima al área de aporte terrestre con fuerte evidencia de la instauración del sistema lacustre en el perfil Cañadón Lahuincó “A” en el cual las asociaciones monoespecíficas de colonias de Botryococcus son comunes en varios de los niveles analizados. La distribución estratigráfica de las especies reconocidas en la Formación Cañadón Asfalto (determinación de FAD y LAD) permitió la asignación de los niveles estudiados. Con tal fin se correlacionaron los taxones relevantes con las biozonas establecidas por Quattrocchio et al. (1996) para la Cuenca Neuquina que permiten asignar la unidad en la localidad estudiada al rango Toarciano tardío-Bajociano tardío. En conclusión, la asociación identificada indica, para la base aflorante de la Formación Cañadón Asfalto, una edad más antigua que la establecida previamente. Dentro del contexto gondwánico la ubicación de Patagonia en latitudes medias durante este período y la configuración del supercontinente coinciden con el comportamiento de las distintas familias vegetales identificadas en la palinoflora indicando un clima cálido a cálido-templado, marcadamente estacional (monzónico) características que coinciden con la presencia del Bioma Subtropical Estacionalmente Seco (sensu Rees et al., 2000) con veranos algo secos e inviernos húmedos. VI ABSTRACT In this thesis detailed palynostratigraphic and palynofacies analysis obtained from the Cañadón Asfalto palynofloras are presented. The achieved palynological results constitute a valuable tool for the comprehension of the vegetal diversity of the Jurassic of Patagonia due to this Period mark a drastic turnover moment for the composition and distribution of the world flora towards remainder Mesozoic. The information gathered through this work improves and strengthens regional investigations on biostratigraphic, paleoecologic and paleoclimatic matter. The Cañadón Asfalto Formation has its characteristic outcrops in the Cerro Cóndor depocenter along middle Chubut river valley. It lays on the mesosilicic volcanic rocks of the Lonco Trapial Formation (Early Jurassic) and, is overlying discordantly by the sedimentites and pyroclastic rocks of the Cañadón Calcáreo Formation (Late Jurassic). This formation consists of scant conglomeratic strata, abundant sandstones, pelites, thick biogenic calcareous levels, tuffs and basaltic intercalations. Three stratigraphic profiles were described and sampled for this work, two in the creek named Quebrada Lahuincó (A and B) at south of the Cerro Condor locality and, the other one at north of that site in the creek called Cañadon Caracoles. Seventy two palynomorphs taxa have been identified during this work, from which 25 are belonging to spore species of anthoceratophytes (Anthocerotaceae), bryophytes (Sphagnaceae) and tracheophytes (Marattiaceae, Cyatheaceae, Dicksoniaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Osmundaceae, Schizaeaceae and un-determined filicopsids), 41 species of pollen grains mainly derived from conifers (Araucariaceae, Cheirolepidiaceae, Podocarpaceae, Pinaceae and ¿Pinaceae-Taxodiaceae?) and, in lees proportion by Pteridospermales (?Corystospermaceae, Caytoniaceae), besides chlorophytic algae, charophytes and a fungi species. Ten species of them are recorded for the first time for Argentina. The Cañadón Asfalto palynoflora is broadly dominated by Cheirolepidiaceae pollen, follows by Araucariaceae pollen and, in less proportion, by Podocarpaceae, Pinaceae y Pteridospermales pollen grains. Bryophyte and pteridophyte spores are minor constituents while algae have important participation in some levels of the unit base (Cañadón Lahuincó “A” Profile). The palynofacies analysis

Program September 2014 ABSTRACT Nutritional stoichiometry and growth of filamentous green algae (Family Zygnemataceae) in response to variable nutrient supply. Colleen Middleton In this study, I investigate the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) on the nutritional stoichiometry and growth of filamentous green algae of the family Zygnemataceae in situ and ex situ . I found a mean of Carbon (C):N:P ratio of 1308:66:1 for populations growing in the Kawartha Lakes of southern Ontario during the summer of 2012. FGA stoichiometry was variable, with much of the variation in algal P related to sediment P ( p < 0.005, R 2 = 0.58). Despite large variability in their cellular nutrient stoichiometry, laboratory analysis revealed that Mougeotia growth rates remained relatively consistent around 0.28 day -1. In addition, Mougeotia was found to be weakly homeostatic with respect to TDN:TDP supply (1/H NP = 0.32). These results suggest that FGA stoichiometry and growth rates are affected by sediment and water N and P. However, they will likely continue to grow slowly throughout the summer despite variable nutrient supply. Near, and Jakob Vinther ABSTRACT Dating the tree of life is a core endeavor in evolutionary biology. Rates of evolution are fundamental to nearly every evolutionary model and process. Rates need dates. There is much debate on the most appropriate and reasonable ways in which to date the tree of life, and recent work has highlighted some confusions and complexities that can be avoided. Whether phylogenetic trees are dated after they have been estab- lished, or as part of the process of tree finding, practitioners need to know which cali- brations to use. We emphasize the importance of identifying crown (not stem) fossils, levels of confidence in their attribution to the crown, current chronostratigraphic preci- sion, the primacy of the host geological formation and asymmetric confidence intervals. Here we present calibrations for 88 key nodes across the phylogeny of animals, rang- ing from the root of Metazoa to the last common ancestor of Homo sapiens. Close attention to detail is constantly required: for example, the classic bird-mammal date (base of crown Amniota) has often been given as 310-315 Ma; the 2014 international time scale indicates a minimum age of 318 Ma. The scapulocoracoid of an Early Triassic stem−frog from Poland. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 47 (1): 79–96. The scapulocoracoid of Czatkobatrachus polonicus Evans and Borsuk−Białynicka, 1998, a stem−frog from the Early Tri− assic karst locality of Czatkowice (Southern Poland), is described. The overall type of scapulocoracoid is plesiomorphic, but the subcircular shape and laterally oriented glenoid is considered synapomorphic of Salientia. The supraglenoid fora− men is considered homologous to the scapular cleft of the Anura. In Czatkobatrachus, the supraglenoid foramen occupies an intermediate position between that of the early tetrapod foramen and the scapular cleft of Anura. The cleft scapula is probably synapomorphic for the Anura. In early salientian phylogeny, the shift in position of the supraglenoid foramen may have been associated with an anterior rotation of the forelimb. This change in position of the forelimb may reflect an evolutionary shift from a mainly locomotory function to static functions (support, balance, eventually shock−absorption). Laterally extended limbs may have been more effective than posterolateral ones in absorbing landing stresses, until the specialised shock−absorption pectoral mechanism of crown−group Anura had developed. The glenoid shape and position, and the slender scapular blade, of Czatkobatrachus, in combination with the well−ossified joint surfaces on the humerus and ulna, all support a primarily terrestrial rather than aquatic mode of life. The new Polish material also permits clarifica− tion of the pectoral anatomy of the contemporaneous Madagascan genus Triadobatrachus.

Species assignment is often difcult because identifcation is based on the characteristics of sexual reproduction in wild-collected samples and spores produced in the feld or laboratory culture. We developed an identifcation procedure based on an improved methodology for inducing sexual conjugation in laboratory-cultivated flaments. We tested the modifed procedure on 52 newly established and genetically diferent strains collected from diverse localities in Japan. We induced conjugation or aplanospore formation under controlled laboratory conditions in 15 of the 52 strains, which allowed us to identify 13 species. Two of the thirteen species were assignable to a related but taxonomically uncertain genus, Temnogyra, based on the unique characteristics of sexual reproduction. Our phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the two Temnogyra species are included in a large clade comprising many species of Spirogyra. Thus, separation of Temnogyra from Spirogyra may be untenable, much as the separation of Sirogonium from Spirogyra is not supported by molecular analyses. Spirogyra Link (Zygnemataceae, Zygnematales) is a genus in the Class Zygnematophyceae (Conjugatophyceae), which is a component member of the Infrakingdom Streptophyta1,2. Spirogyra has long been included in high school biology curricula. Te genus is widely distributed in freshwater habitats including fowing water, perma- nent ponds and temporary pools3.

Abstract Amid serious concerns over declining taxonomic research world-wide, Bangladesh showed positive trends over 1972-2002. Some important developments in the global arena over the last decade give a mixed view on the growth of taxonomic research. This demands revisiting Bangladesh’s plant taxonomic research to identify major factors guiding its courses. Taxonomic papers published in three Bangladeshi journals and the Flora of Bangladesh (1972-2012) were analyzed using a scoring system. The present study reveals a four-fold increase in annual average of integrated taxonomic studies (those use knowledge of other branches of biology) over the last decade compared with the preceding decade. Conventional, inventory type taxonomic studies, on the other hand, has reduced by 15%. Studies on algae showed 42% increase in annual average, while studies on angiosperms remained unchanged. Although unpublished researches like Master’s theses increased significantly in recent years, the number of published work has decreased. The possible reasons for such decline are no net increase in plant taxonomists over the last decade, taxonomists struggling to transform researches into publishable manuscripts, and enhanced reputation of Bangladeshi journals increasing the proportion of foreign papers (a situation termed as ‘reputational backlash’). The paper envisages that classical taxonomic studies will dominate in Bangladesh in the coming decades given the enormous exploratory task awaiting the taxonomists.

Samples collected throughout Korea from October 2004 to July 2015 were examined using light microscopy. Mor- phological characteristics (e.g., size of vegetative cells, number of chloroplasts in each cell, type of end walls of adjacent cells, details of conjugation, shape of female gametangia, dimensions and shape of zygospores, color and ornamentation of median spore walls) were used as diagnostic characteristics for species identification.
