South Central Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. P. O. Box 80 Glasgow, Kentucky 42141 DIARY OF LITTLEBERRY J HALEY. DD

This diary was prepared and presented by J G Haley, Christmas, 1942. Filmed by the Historical Commission, SBC, November 16, 1967. This copy by courtesy of Allen Haley, 262 Tomahawk Trail, Cedar Rapids, la. When I was about 2 or 3 years old, my parents William A Haley and Elizabeth Haley, moved from Virginia to Kentucky. They moved from near Richmond, in Henrico County. I was too small to recollect much or anything about it, I do seem to have an indistinct recoll ection of some things that occurred on the journey. But it would seeir. trivial to mention them. Belled horses for instance and some sick ness on the way of my mother and the baby (John Haley) which occas ioned some alarm. The trip, made, I should say, about 1835, v/as made by v:agons. There was no other way that it could have been made at that time. No railroads, then. My father first settled in Green Co Ky near Green River. He afte wards settled in Barren County. Near Lafayette, a little town in said county. He was pretty well off when he moved out to Kentucky, but seems not to have been at all successful in business after getting to Ky. He engaged with some parties in mercantile business and lost by them and never recovered from the losses he sustained. He afterwaxds ran a little farm and in that way made a living. He had two children by a former marriage, amd four by my mother. My mother was an Allen - sister of Rev. LW Allen - and from the time that I knew her, she was a very delicate woman. She had been, I have always been told, very beautiful. The names of her four children were William Austin Haley, Littleberry J Haley, John MHaley, and Joseph N Haley. Joseph the youngest died when about six or eight years old. Rather he was killed. He got a grain of corn lodged in his throat and some doctors undertook to cut it out and killed him. He was a sweet and beautiful little boy. How distinctly X remember himi And how distinctly I remember the wretched day, when they took him from play ing with us in the yard and laid him upon the table and held him down and cut his throat! Our parents were then dead and little Joseph was living with Uncle Rev, Reuben Allen. I shall never forget that day, I suppose I was 12 years old. My father died first. He died of paralysis. He had two strokes, at some distance apart. When the second one came upon him, he was from home. He was at a village in the neighborhood known as Lafay ette, He was sitting down at the time and the stroke Ccune upon him and he sunk down and died. How well do I remember when the messen ger came to our house and said, he was dead. It was a sad day. My mother, almost abed, with ill health and we left in the world with out our Father, He was a good father, A quiet, honest, amiable, pious loving father as any child ever had. How I remember his kind and gen tle and loving devotion to us his children. But God saw fit to take him and permitted him to die an easy and quiet death. He was prepared to go. For he was an hiimble, quiet, consistent Christian. None ever '^ore so. His body was brought home and buried at the place where we were then living, in Barren County, Ky. I do to be able to visit the graves of my parents some of these days. My father must have died sometime about 1840-3. He was about 50 years old when he died. Betv/een 47 and 50, My mother lived only a short time after his death. Her health failed rapidly and she was soon laid by his side in the 9^^v®y3.rd, that was made on the place where we lived. She was much younger thaoi he. After the death of my parents we were broken up. Everything was sold out and utterly poor, we boys were taken by our uncles on our mother's side. Uncle Austin Allen took me and Uncle Reuben Allen took William and Joseph, and John was taken by Uncle John Allen. This breaking up must have occurred about 1841 or 2 or 3. I lived with Uncle Austin until the spring of '47 when we disagreed and I left him, I then had a half-brother in Louisville, Ky., engaged in the tobacco business. Thomas Haley. He was the surviving child of my father's first marriage. After leaving my Uncle Austin, with the help of my Uncle Reuben Allen, I made my way to my brother Thomas' and was received by him with great cordialality. I spent several months with him and worked in his factory. He was very kind to me, William was also living with him and VJilliam and myself were quite happy together for the few months I was in Louisville. My brother Thomas, however, had some correspondence with my Uncle Littleberry Allen, who lived in Virginia in regard to me and as the result, it was agreed that I should be shipped to my uncle in Virginia. Accordingly, in the month of July 1847 as well as I can now remember, I was put on board a steamboat on the Ohio River at the wharf at Louisville, in charge of some per sons traveling East, and who were friends of my brother Thomas, and jpurney to Richmond, Virginia. I was then about 14 years old, in my 15th. Well do I remember that trip up the Ohio. We were on a nice boat. She traveled slow and it took us nearly two days and one night to reach Wheeling, We however had a good time. Nothing worth relating here occurred. Of course every scene and place was new and the curiosity was ever on the alert with the thought. What next? A trip on one of those Western rivers, in a magnificent steamer such as we traveled on, is well worth taking. We kept to the steamboat until we reached Wheeling, a large and flourishing town on the Ohio, but a very dingy and smoke bedimmed town. Here we spent the night. The next morning, our party having secured a stage for the party, set out across the country to a town called Cumberland on the line of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Which place as well as I can remember we reached on the evening of the 2nd day after we set out from Wheeling. We crossed a country gramd in its mountain scenery and as we had no occasion to be in a great hurry, we enjoyed the scenery no little. I remember one of the most beauti ful scenes we had was the sunset from the top of a very lofty peak of the Alleghany, It was truly grand and made quite an impression on my youthful fancy. I have never seen auiything since that was so greind. We got to Cumberland about night and think we spent the night there, and the next morning we boarded a train of cars and started for Baltimore, Two things struck my attention at Cumberland. One, the vast quantities of chestnuts on the streets, and most of all the railroad. It was the first time I had ever seen a railroad and the first time I ever saw a train of cars. It was the Baltimore RR running to Cumberland, Maryland. Since it has become the Baltimore and Ohio R R, and is one of the institutions of the land. From Cumberland we came on to Baltimore. At a place called the Relay House, my compamy and myself separated. They went on to Balti more and they sent me on to Washington. I wish I could know those kind friends now. They were Just as good as they could be and I would give so much if some coincidence would bring us together again. But never I presume will it be. How sad aind lonely I felt at our parting and for the first time perhaps certainly more sensibly than ever before I felt myself alone in the wide world. I went or rather was carried to Washington, thence through the city in cui omnibus to the Potomac landing, where I took the boat for Aquia Creek. There the boat connected with the cars on the R.F, & P. Railroad, and embarking on them I Icoided in due course of time in the city of Richmond. I went to the Washington Hotel (then kept by Mr. John Talman) and there for the first time in my life I met with my uncle L. W. Allen, He was there to meet with me. This as well as I can remember was in the month of July or August. I think it was Au gust. Nothing is worthy any special notice connected with my meet ing with my uncle in Richmond, He was a remarkably fine-looking, handsome person. Indeed he was one of the finest-looking persons I ever saw. I on the other hand, it hurts me to say it, must have struck him as a very indifferent and uncouth specimen of a Kentucky boy. Nature had never done much for me and her indifference to my person and makeup and attractions had been rendered the more painful and conspicuous by my want of the refinements and cultivations of good society and education. I do not remember to have heard my uncle ever to express any opinion of my appearance on my first introduct ion to him, or as to the impression made on his mind on the occasion referred to. But I suspect he secretly harbored the thought that if he niade anything of that boy, he would have a hard time, that his undertaking would be somewhat similar to what has always been consid ered the task impossible of extracting the crimson fluid from the vegetable known as "the White Flat Dutch". However I may do myself the justice to say that I had never felt any strong disposition to any irregularities, and apart from having a strong inclination to amusement and fun, I was very generally aind very properly, I think, regarded as a well-disposed, amiable and decent boy. After spending a night and perhaps a day in Richmond, we set out for the home of my uncle. At that time he was living near Gloucester C.H. in Gloucester County, Virginia. VJe went down the James, the noble James. We landed on the river at a place known as the "Grove landing". Then by steps to Yorktown. At which place we crossed the York River and thence, by private conveyeaice as well as I remember to his home in Gloucester. In December, about the 20th we moved from Gloucester to Caroline County. My uncle and family coming straight from G. to Richmond. I was sent around by the Chesapeake Bay from Wares landing in G. to Norfolk, in a sail boat, with the household goods, on the Bay all

82 nigh't, the weather being very calm. On the next day abought night as well as I can remember we landed in Norfolk, Our goods were trans ferred to a James River steamer and I followed them to Richmond, My uncle who was seargeant at arms in the Virginia Senate (1847) met me at Hockets. He was boarding on Broad St. North side, opposite the Old Theatre, 7th St., with an excellent old lady named Mrs. Nichols. I remained in Richmond several days attending to the transfer of our goods from the boat to the R.F.P.R.R. In the meantime Aunt Anne and the children joined us. When everything was ready, we left Richmond and landed in Caroline County at the Chesterfield Depot, now Ruther Glenn, R.F.P, Thence we went to a place in Caroline known as Jericho, on North Anna River, Jericho Mills, We remained at J. until the spring of '43. Then we moved to Applewood. In May 1849 there was a very good eet- ing at County Line Church, a number professed religion and joined the church, I among them, I made my profession on the 15th day of May and was baptised on the 19th, 1849. I was then in my 16th year. I was ordained at County Line Church on the 2nd Sunday in August 1856. B, Manly, Jr., R, Ryland, D,D., E. Darin, ajid L, WW. Allen were the presbytery. OFFICERS AND MEN IN LORD DUNMQRE'S WAR OF 1774 Contributed by Patricia Burton, Official Consultant for Mason Co. West Va. Bi-Centennial Commission 7300 Deep Run, Birmingham, M.ich. AMERICA'S FRONTIER, LTD, of Bolar, Virginia, winner of a Freedom Foundation award for its , during the Bicentennial, is now beginn ing a certified index of the officers and men of the SOUTHERN DIVISION, under the command of Colonel Andrew Lewis during Lord Dunmore's War of 1774. It was part of this Division which fought and won the Battle of Point Pleasant on October lOth of that year, at the Junction of the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers in the present State of West Virginia. This battle has been officially recognized as the first battle of the Amer ican Revolution. In the summer of 1774, the troops were called out by Virginia's Governor, the 4th Earl of Dunmore, the threat of an Indian v;ar on the frontiers His lordship i:ook-personal command of the NORTH ERN DIVISION, Colonel Andrew Lewis, regarded as the foremost military man in Virginia, was named Commander-in-Chief of the SOUTHERN DIVISION. On October lOth, Lewis' forces won the battle at "The Point." It was later highly suspected that the I dians were serving as allies of the British. The reports of the officers were never filed in Williamsburg. Instead, they were retained by them as their personal papers. It was 1840 when the first of these official reports caune to light down in Pontotoc, Mississippi. Lyman Copelajid Draper made the discov ery and then spent the balance of his life adding to these records, lie died in 1891 and left his invaluable accumulation to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. It is from these original documents that AMERICA'S FRONTIER, LTD, is now compiling the list of officers and men who took part in the military campaign of 1774, The three regiments and four independent companies which made up the SOUTHERN DIVISION are as follows: AUGUSTA COUNTY REGIMENT: BOTE- TOURT COUNTY REGIMENT: FINCASTLE COUNTY REGIMENT: CULPEPER TROOPS: BEDFORD COUNTY VOLUNTEERS: DUNMORE COUNTY VOLUNTEERS: AND CAPTAIN HARROD'S PARTY from KENTUCKY. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL NOTICE A reminder that this issue is the last issue of your payment for 1976 membership quarterlies. Mauiy of our members have already sent in their 1977 renewals, for which we are very grateful. We were fearful that we might have to increase our dues, but v;e decided that we would try to keep expenses down, and still have the membership dues $5.00, as they have been. Needless to say, at that price, we are not able financially to send out renewal notices by separate mail. Our members have always been very understanding about this. Thank you. JUST NOW. BEFORE YOU FORGET IT. PLEASE SEND US YOUR RENEWAL

99 NEWS-^.!OTES-^iOX_ICE3 LOCKE FAHiLY A£'^-'•CIATION We are printing this letter just as we received it, as we rrcvj it v/ill be of great interest to many. (Editor) 1 November 1976 Dear Mrs Wilson: After receiving your letter in which you asked if there v/as a Locke Fsmxly Association I got busy getting one orgajii^ed. Instead of a newsletter or quarterly, we are going to use a traveling notsbcok to share our individually gathered Locke research information. Briefly, the notebook will work like this. Each member snli.y^tr. xnformatxon to the editor who arranges the material in a notebook. Each person may keep the notebook for two weeks, add any new material and then send it on to the next name on the membership list. A2X tyiDes of information ranging from original records, published r-cords, querj.es, advice, and ancestor charts will be included in the notebook. There are no dues; the only cost involved is in mailing the book. At present we have about twenty members, but expect to have many more by the time the notebook goes into circulation on Februar:-- 1. 1977. I will include information about The Biociraphy of Elder ."-^cc-b Locke and your Society. I would appreciate your mentioning the Lo'.-J'c Family Association in your quarterly. Any of your members who are interested in joining us ar^ asked to send a SASE for complete details to me at the address below. Will also be happy to send details to anyone wishing to staxt another sur- najne notebook. We are trying to attract as mciny members as we can. Th^ more members and information we can include in the notebook, the mors each of us v.'ill benefit. I have enjoyed reading the little book abbut Jacob LockeV Co often we are so eager to gather names that we overlook the way or life of our ancestors. We forget their struggles just to live day to day. I thank you for any "boost" you can give our Locke Family Assoc iation. Sincerely - Linda Locke Tiller Add: 1005 Birchwood Garland, Tex 75043 *************** We are grieved to announce the death of one of our members who nas added much enjoyment to our quarterly by his writings.
