The Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP Premier Parliament House SYDNEY NSW 2000 Dear Premier, Report – NSW Bushfire Inquiry In January 2020 you announced the establishment of the NSW Bushfire Inquiry, noting it was to be completed by 31 July 2020. We now submit the final report of that Inquiry. The 2019-20 bush fires were some of the worst in the world and in recorded history. The Inquiry has worked to understand what happened during the 2019-20 bush fire season and how it was different to seasons that have come before. It makes 76 recommendations for future improvements to how NSW plans and prepares for, and responds to, bush fires. Some of these recommendations are for immediate action; others for actions that need to start now but will take some time to complete. Noting the breadth of the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference, the recommendations range from improvements to operational systems and processes through to significant research and strategic policy frameworks that require further development and consultation with key stakeholders. In presenting this final report we wish to acknowledge the assistance of many people – those who took the time to write submissions or talk to the Inquiry; the NSW fire agencies; colleagues from government departments in NSW and other jurisdictions; colleagues in industry, research organisations, and professional associations; and the Secretariat and Advisors to the Inquiry drawn from several government departments who worked hard to help us make sense of a complex matter.

Tuesday, 4 August 2020 Legislative Assembly- PROOF Page 1 LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY Tuesday, 4 August 2020 The Speaker (The Hon. Jonathan Richard O'Dea) took the chair at 12:00. The Speaker read the prayer and acknowledgement of country. [Notices of motions given.] Bills GAS LEGISLATION AMENDMENT (MEDICAL GAS SYSTEMS) BILL 2020 First Reading Bill introduced on motion by Mr Kevin Anderson, read a first time and printed. Second Reading Speech Mr KEVIN ANDERSON (Tamworth—Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation) (12:16:12): I move: That this bill be now read a second time. I am proud to introduce the Gas Legislation Amendment (Medical Gas Systems) Bill 2020. The bill delivers on the New South Wales Government's promise to introduce a robust and effective licensing regulatory system for persons who carry out medical gas work. As I said on 18 June on behalf of the Government in opposing the Hon. Mark Buttigieg's private member's bill, nobody wants to see a tragedy repeated like the one we saw at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. As I undertook then, the Government has taken the steps necessary to provide a strong, robust licensing framework for those persons installing and working on medical gases in New South Wales. To the families of John Ghanem and Amelia Khan, on behalf of the Government I repeat my commitment that we are taking action to ensure no other families will have to endure as they have. The bill forms a key part of the Government's response to licensed work for medical gases that are supplied in medical facilities in New South Wales.

  • Barton Deakin Brief: 2019 NSW State Election 28 February 2019
Barton Deakin Brief: 2019 NSW State Election 28 February 2019 The 2019 New South Wales (NSW) State Election will be held on Saturday 23 March 2019, with the incumbent Liberal-National Coalition Government seeking a third term in office following its wins at the 2011 and 2015 state elections. The Coalition is led by the Premier and Leader of the NSW Liberal Party, the Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP. The Opposition is led by the Leader of the NSW Labor Party, the Hon Michael Daley MP. The NSW Government will officially entered caretaker mode on 1 March 2019. This Barton Deakin Brief previews the 2019 NSW State Election. Electoral System Under the NSW Constitution, elections are held on the fourth Saturday in March every four years. NSW is divided into 93 electorates (comprehensive electoral maps can be accessed here), with one representative elected from each electorate to the Legislative Assembly, the Lower House. The 42 members of the Legislative Council, the Upper House, represent NSW as a whole across an eight-year term. At each State election, half these members retire and an election is held for 21 positions. NSW has compulsory voting. Optional preferential ballots are conducted in single-member seats for the Legislative Assembly and across the entire State for the proportionally elected Legislative Council. Current Parliamentary Composition At the 2015 NSW State Election, the Liberal and National Parties (the “Coalition”) received 54.3% of the state-wide two-party preferred vote, winning 54 seats to the Labor Party’s 34 seats in the Legislative Assembly. The result represented a 9.9% swing to Labor since the 2011 election.
