Qatar, US naval forces carry out joint exercise

The Qatar Amiri Naval Forces (QANF) have carried out a joint exercise with the US Navy in the Qatari territorial waters. The exercise aims to raise the eff iciency of ship crews and standardise concepts. The programme involved joint manoeuvres and other combat exercises during which a large number of naval patrols received training in communications, besides monitoring of sea and air targets and sub-surface targets. The exercise comes within the framework of agreements between Qatar and the US in the field of military training and planning.

The envoy, who hosted a dinner reception in Doha re- cently to mark the occasion, said that China is keen and ready to work with Qatar to continue the progress of co- operation and friendship. He expressed hope that a new chapter on relations be- tween the two countries is being written to record the The ambassador with Qatar Central Bank governor HE Sheikh Abdulla bin Saoud al-Thani, various achievements. Addressing the guests, the ambassador said that rela- tions between the two countries have matured and be- come stronger over three decades of diplomatic ties. This off ers promising opportunities and the scope for a brighter and broader future. “China is now working on enhancing openness and support for joint work for the Belt and Road initiative, while Qatar is working towards Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims for diversifi cation of the national econ- omy and self-dependence,” the envoy said. “This has made China and Qatar more qualifi ed at this particular time to strengthen their co-operation and work together to attain mutual interests,” he noted. Besides co-operation in the fi elds such as energy, trade and infrastructure, Qatar and China have also sought ex- pansion in diff erent areas of co-operation in recent years like communication, fi nance and investment, industry, security and military and the fi ght against terrorism. This has further raised co-operation between the two countries to higher levels. The ambassador said that at the international level the two countries have co-operated and co-ordinated eff orts to work towards peace and stability in the region and the world. They have also worked together on defending the com- mon interests of developing countries and on building a human society marked by peace and friendship. Further, the ambassador stressed the deep and friendly relations between the Qatari and the Chinese people as the two countries have lately agreed on exempting the citizens of both countries from visa requirements, which will be implemented soon, giving Qatari and Chinese citi- zens more freedom of movement. Qatar Airways operates direct fl ights between Doha and seven cities in China, making travel easier between the two countries. In addition, the number of Chinese tourists amounted to nearly 45,000 for 2017, a 26% increase compared with the previous year. All the fi gures indicate positive and progressively ad- vancing relations between the two countries. For instance, trade volume between the two countries amounted to $10.3bn in 2017, growing by 200 times com- pared with the corresponding fi gure 30 years ago. In addition, many Chinese companies are entering the Qatari market on major projects, and similarly Qatari fi rms are entering the Chinese market. The Chinese ambassador thanked all those who have contributed to such developments and achievements in bilateral relations, expressing confi dence that more will come soon.

housands of displaced Syr- ians were heading home Tyesterday after rebels and the government reached a cease- fi re deal in the south following more than two weeks of deadly bombardment. Under the agreement an- nounced Friday after talks be- tween rebels and regime ally Mos- cow, opposition fi ghters will hand over territory in the southern province of Deraa near the Jorda- nian border. Deraa is seen as the cradle of the uprising that sparked Syria’s sev- en-year war, and the government retaking full control of it would be a symbolic victory for President Bashar al-Assad. A Russia-backed regime off en- sive in Deraa has displaced more than 320,000 people since June 19, the United Nations says, including tens of thousands who fl ed south to the sealed border with Jordan. Judge orders list of children separated from migrant parents

AFP Los Angeles

California judge on Friday gave the US government until yes- Aterday night to submit a list of children under fi ve separated from their families at the border, a government of- fi cial said. US President Donald Trump’s admin- istration had asked the court to extend a deadline to reunite some detained chil- dren with their migrant parents, arguing it needed more time to perform neces- sary checks and confi rm identities. Judge Dana Sabraw had issued an in- junction on June 26 requiring the gov- ernment to reunite detained migrant children under the age of fi ve within 14 days and those over that age within 30 days. More than 2,300 children, around 100 of them under the age of fi ve, were separated from their families as a con- sequence of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy that saw their parents prosecuted for illegally cross- ing the border, even if they did so to seek asylum. Several hundred have already been reunited with their parents, but the gov- ernment has struggled to keep up, and it admitted Thursday to using DNA tests to determine parentage. In total, about 11,800 migrant chil- dren are currently detained by US au- thorities after having crossed the border Firefighters battle a fast-moving wildfire that destroyed homes, driven by strong wind and high temperatures forcing thousands of residents to evacuate in Goleta, California. illegally, but 80% of them are teenagers who arrived alone, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar has said. “The judge made it very clear he wasn’t going to allow the Trump admin- istration to drag its feet on reunifying these children with their parents,” Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the Ameri- Fast-spreading California can Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said of the Friday ruling. The just-concluded visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to France underscores the growing importance of Qatar on the international stage, especially at a time when the country is facing an unjust siege imposed by the Saudi-led quartet. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar on June 5, 2017, accusing it of backing terrorism, a charge which Doha denies. Since then the four countries have mounted a campaign to tarnish Qatar’s fair image globally. The latest visit of the The overly complex Amir to France, and his numerous previous tours of several countries over the past year, reaffi rm Qatar’s prestigious position in the international arena and the world’s respect for its policies in the face of the siege. The Amir’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday refl ects the signifi cance of Qatar as a main European Union partner of France in the fi ght against terrorism.
