PETERSON ABSTRACT The Harrodsburg Limestone (Mississippian) in northwest-central Kentucky consists of 20 to 50 feet of light-gray coarse-grained fossil-fragmental limestone and minor silty limestone. It underlies the Salem Limestone, overlies the Borden Formation, and includes the Leesville and Guthrie Creek Members, of the Lower Harrodsburg of P. B. Stockdale and the Harrodsburg (restricted) as used by him. INTRODUCTION The name Harrodsburg Limestone was given (Hopkins and Sieben- tlial, 1897) to a unit of predominantly carbonate rocks of Mississippian age in Indiana and was subsequently used in Kentucky. -

Geologic Contrasts in Indiana State Parks Otis W. Freeman, Indiana University The state parks of Indiana, with sites selected largely for scenic and historic reasons but partly with the intent to secure wide geo- graphical distribution for recreational purposes, contain a fairly com- plete sequence of the geological formations outcropping in the state, besides providing examples for a large majority of the physiographic principles. Evidence of vulcanism is one of the chief things missing, since all of the exposed bedrock in Indiana is of sedimentary origin. Even so, many types of igneous and metamorphic rocks can be picked up among the glacial boulders in the northern part of the state. The oldest exposed rocks are those of the Ordovician period. Ex- cellent outcrops for the study of the Ordovician strata occur in south- eastern Indiana on the west flank of the Cincinnati Arch. The beds are highly fossiliferous and one of the famous collecting grounds for the life forms of this period is near Madison. Clifty Falls State Park includes strata classified in the upper Or- dovician, the Silurian and base of the Devonian periods. The Silurian rocks occupy the hill slopes above the falls and inner gorges in the park with the Devonian capping the higher hills. The Ordovician formations in the park area from the base up- ward, begin with 25 feet of the Bellevue, followed by 115 feet of the Arnheim, 55 feet of the Waynesville, 50 feet of the Liberty, about 32 feet of the Saluda and possibly 6 feet of Whitewater. Shale predominates from the Bellevue through the Liberty and is interbedded with thin layers and lenses of limestone, and in contrast the Saluda is a thick bedded limestone with reef corals occuring near its base. -

Stratigraphic Problems 323 STRATIGRAPHIC PROBLEMS INVOLVED IN DETER- MINING THE GEOLOGIC STRUCTURE IN THE LOWER MISSISSIPPIAN OUTCROP AREA OF SOUTHERN INDIANA Paris B. Stockdale, Ohio State University Introduction. At places in the outcrop belt of lower Mississippian rocks in southern Indiana, geologic structure is difficult to ascertain from a survey of the areal geology because of certain perplexing and confus- ing stratigraphic relations. Some of the data gathered for structural purposes have been incorrect as a result of failure to appreciate the na- ture of certain stratigraphic problems and to recognize the correct age and correlation of certain beds. One complex group of rocks, the Borden (Knobstone), has been more or less avoided in the past because of lack of sufficient acquaintance with details of the stratigraphy. Recent intensive study of the stratigraphy of the Borden and associated lower Mississip- pian formations of southern Indiana has brought to light several strati- graphic horizons which may be used as keys for geologic structure de- terminations. The same study has also revealed some perplexing and significant stratigraphic situations which should occasion caution on the part of the worker on geologic structure.^ The aim of this paper is to clarify some ,of the confusion which has arisen from the misunderstand- ing of some of the more important stratigraphic problems. No attempt is here made to treat the subject fully. STRATIGRAPHY OF THE LOWER MISSISSIPPIAN ROCKS OF INDIANA The Stratigraphic Column. The stratigraphic column involved in this study consists of Mississippian formations which lie beneath the Salem limestone. In the classification of the Indiana Division of Geology these formations are all considered older than Meramecian. -

A New Crinoid Fauna from the Harrodsburg Limestone (Mississippian) of Southern Indiana James R. Welch and N. Gary Lane Department of Geology- Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 47401 Abstract A recently discovered crinoid fauna from the lower three meters of the Harrodsburg Limestone (Osagian; Mississippian) along Judah Branch, southern Monroe County, Indiana, provides new evidence for the age relations of the Bono and Canton crinoid faunas in Indiana. Fossils from Bono, Lawrence County, and Canton, Washington County, were collected in the 19th century and these localities and their stratigraphic positions are not now known. The new site has yielded 15 species of crinoids, nine of which have been reported from Canton and three from Bono. Other species found include one known from the Ramp Creek Formation below the Harrodsburg and one also found in the Salem Limestone above. This new locality thus supports the hypothesis of Lane (1972) that the Canton fauna is of early Harrodsburg age and that the Bono fauna is slightly younger, but also of Harrodsburg age. The Judah Branch fauna is almost equally divided between inadunate crinoids (8 species) and camerates (6 species) with one flexible crinoid. The fauna is thus intermediate in terms of community evolution between the Canton fossils, dominated by inadunates, and the Bono crinoids, in which camerates are predominant. Introduction During the latter part of the 19th century a series of Mississippian age crinoid faunas were described from Indiana that were typically attributed to what was called a "Keokuk" age. This meant that these Indiana rocks and fossils were judged to be of the same age as the Keokuk Limestone, the uppermost formation of the Osagian series of the Mississippian, which crops out along the west side of the Illinois Basin. -
