Sac h k o v & V a d im V Z o lo t u h in received 24.II.2000 Summary: 309 species belonging to 21 families of Bombyces et Sphinges are listed for the modern Volgo-Ural fauna. 12 species ( Sesia philantiformis, Jordanita tenuicornis, Adscita manni, Zygaena trifolii, Z. occitanica, Phragmataecia territa, Amata phegea, Euchampsonia cristata, Phalera bucephaloides, Minna christophi, Hemaris croatica, Hyles nicaea and, prob­ ably, Holoarctia puengeleri) are deleted from the list. They were either erroneously deter­ minated or have disappeared ( Hemaris croatica) since Eversmann 's work. 129 species are recorded for the region in addition to Eversmann 's list. This paper is the third in a series of publications1 dealing with the composition of the present- day fauna of the Heterocera moths of various families, the so-called Bombyces et Sphinges, in the Middle Volga and the south-western Cisurals. This region comprises the administrative divisions of the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Uljanovsk, Orenburg, Uralsk and Atyraus (= Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bashkiria.

    National Monument and Preserve U.S. Department of the Interior 1 Craters of the Moon o Butterflies and Moths (Lepidoptera) of CRMO Butterflies and moths are some of the most widely-distributed and recognizable insects. They are found worldwide in nearly every habitat, comprising an estimated 174,250 species. About 700 butterflies and 11,000 moths are found in North America. Over 300 species of Lepidoptera have been documented on Craters of the Moon (CRMO) another 250 may occur here. Edith’s Checkerspot Lepidopterans feed primarily on nectar from flowers but may derive nourishment from pollen, tree sap, rotting fruit, dung or decaying flesh, and they can get dissolved minerals from wet sand or dirt. Many, however, do not feed at all as adults. They are important as pollinators and are capable of moving pollen over great distances. Lepidopterans have a four stage life cycle consisting of the egg, larva (caterpillar) and chrysalis (cocoon) before finally emerging as fully formed adults. They employ just about every strategy to avoid winter. Some migrate long distances, others hibernate and some completely die off leaving only the eggs to survive winter and begin the next generation. Data concerning distribution, type species or type genus, designation, incorrect spelling and emendation, preoccupation and replacement names, synonyms and homonyms, nomina nuda, and rejected names are given. Several new combinations and synonyms are provided. Key words: Sesioidea, systematics, taxonomy, zoogeographic regions. Introduction: Almost 25 years have passed since HEPPNER & DUCKWORTH (1981) published their 'Classification of the Superfamily Sesioidea'. In the meantime great progress has been made in the investigation and classification of the family Sesiidae (clearwing moths). Important monographs covering the Palearctic and Nearctic regions, and partly South America or South-East Asia have been made available (EICHLIN & DUCKWORTH 1988, EICHLIN 1986, 1989, 1995b and 1998, ŠPATENKA et al. 1999, KALLIES & ARITA 2004), and numerous descriptions of new taxa as well as revisions of genera and species described by earlier authors have been published, mainly dealing with the Oriental region (ARITA & GORBUNOV 1995c, ARITA & GORBUNOV 1996b etc.). Therefore, the authors felt the need to provide an updated checklist of the Sesiidae of the world. This list solely aims to summarize the changes in taxonomy and classification of the Sesiidae and to provide a thorough bibliography of relevant literature.
