(13) How ironie then that this poor narrator is forced twelve years later to speak entirely in English when the novel is translated (betrayed?) -1 In her November 9, 1985, Le Devoir article, "Speak White: de l'accusation à la nécessité," Natalie Petrowski describes how speaking white — English — has become both chic for young people, and a financial necessity for rock and other art groups. To speak English, to speak white, "parlez avec l'accent de Milton et Byron et Shelley et Keats," as Michèle Lalonde wrote in her famous 1968 poème-affiche, has long been a sensitive issue in Quebec : a sign of the contamination of racial purity in the 1920's and 1930's, of Quebec's awareness of her colonized status in the 1960's and 1970's, a marker of the ambitions and economic realities of the 1980's.2 Note the difference in Roch Carrier's use of English in the title of his 1968 satire of French-English relations during World War II, La Guerre, Yes Sir! and in René-Daniel Dubois's contemporary play, Being at Home with Claude ( 1985). Readers race alongside Sal Paradise as he sweeps across the land, paus- ing to exult in the vastness of what he calls “the great raw bulge and bulk of my American continent” (Kerouac, Road, 79). And as they cover “the whole mad thing, the ragged promised land” with Sal, they encounter cowboys and vagrants, students of Nietzsche and Mexican migrants, ranchers, coal-truck drivers, mothers and fathers, drug addicts, poets, con men, jazz musicians—all the people of his “American continent” across its varied, incredible landscape (Kerouac, Road, 83). Is this “American continent,” however, confined to the United States of America? At first glance, the answer must be yes: The book begins with Sal Paradise “reading books about the pioneers” and poring over maps of the United States (Kerouac, Road, 10). -

Morgan is also pursuing a second monograph project, entitled Heartlands/Pays du cœur, which looks at fictional representations of Québec’s ‘regions’. The ostensible purpose of the parade was to mark the official opening of the Molson Centre, but its raison d’être was the transference of the Forum’s ghosts, its karma, its winning spirit. In light of this underlying goal, even more important than those vintage hockey players decked out in the bleu, blanc et rouge, was the presence of a simple torch. Review Articles Visual Archives and the Writing of Canadian History: A Personal Review JIM BURANT RÉSUMÉ En fondant ses arguments sur plus de vingt-cinq ans d’expérience avec les archives visuelles, l’auteur analyse la question des liens entre les archives visuelles et l’écriture de l’histoire canadienne dans les trois dernières décennies. Il passe en revue l’usage fait par les chercheurs universitaires, dans les publications du dernier quart de siècle, des images tirées des archives et principalement des fonds d’art et de photogra- phies des Archives nationales du Canada. L’article démontre comment certains spécia- listes actuels dans les domaines de l’histoire de l’art, de la géographie et des sciences sociales ou de l’environnement, entre autres, utilisent une telle imagerie visuelle dans leur recherche et leur analyse. Un relevé de la littérature disponible relative aux archives visuelles suit. L’auteur poursuit avec un examen du dialogue qui devrait se développer entre les archivistes et les autres professionnels afin que les archives visuelles, et particulièrement les photographies, deviennent une partie intégrante de la création d’interprétations significatives de notre histoire et de notre mémoire collec- tive. ABSTRACT Basing his arguments on more than twenty-five years of experience with visual archives, the author focuses on issues relating to visual archives and the writing of Canadian history over the past three decades. A review is undertaken of the use made by academic researchers of images from visual archives – primarily from the art and photography holdings of the National Archives of Canada – in historical publica- tions over the past quarter century; and of how some current practitioners in such fields as art history, geography, and the social and environmental sciences, among others, are using such visual imagery as part of their research and analysis. -

The answer is never the answer. What's really interesting is the mystery. If you seek the mystery instead of the answer, you'll always be seeking. I've never seen anybody really find the answer, but they think they have. So they stop thinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery. ~ Ken Kesey1 Those of you who have read my articles in the past may be surprised that I am advocating mystery as I begin this one. Notice, though, that the opposite of mystery in the opening quotation is “interpretive answers.” Interpretive answers appear to resolve the questions that remain unanswered, that will most likely never be answered. Sometimes they are presented not as “interpretation,” but as fact; not as opinion, but as a moral or ethical judgment. All of the Filles du Roi of New France have been subjected to such judgments over the years, judgments often based on insufficient or inaccurate evidence, Thanks to Jean Baptiste Colbert, who initiated the plan, and King Louis XIV of France, who agreed to set aside funds to sponsor marriageable women, the Filles du Roi (King’s daughters) began, in 1663, to leave home, family, and friends behind to journey to a world new to them. Their intention was to find a husband among the colonists of New France, Canada. The 350th anniversary of the arrival of the first Filles du Roi in 1663 is being commemorated this year in celebrations and in publication of the results of renewed research into their lives.2 Those who have written about them in the past have not always been balanced in evaluating them, nor have they had access to documents that have been found recently or that have become more easily available to researchers.
