1. Morning glory, starlit sky, soaring music, scholar’s truth, flight of swallows, autumn leaves, memory’s treasure, grace of youth:

2. Open are the gifts of God, gifts of love to mind and sense; hidden is love’s agony, love’s endeavour, love’s expense.

3. Love that gives, gives ever more, gives with zeal, with eager hands, spares not, keeps not, all outpours, ventures all, its all expends.

4. Drained is love in making full, bound in setting others free, poor in making many rich, weak in giving power to be.

5. Therefore he who shows us God helpless hangs upon the tree; and the nails and crown of thorns tell of what God’s love must be.

6. Here is God: no monarch he, throned in easy state to reign; here is God, whose arms of love aching, spent, the world sustain.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; you nourish and sus- tain all living things. Thanks be to God. We give you thanks that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the River Jordan to new life in the land of promise. Thanks be to God. We give you thanks for your Son Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing with the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God. We give you thanks that through the deep waters of death, Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. Thanks be to God We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who forms us in the likeness of Christ and leads us to proclaim your kingdom. Thanks be to God. And now we give you thanks that we are made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. Pour out your Holy Spirit in bless- ing, that this water may be a sign of our new birth in Baptism. May we continue for ever in Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. Now that our Lenten observance is ended, let us reaffirm the promises we made in baptism. Do you turn to Christ? I do. Do you repent of your sins? I do. Do you renounce all that is evil? I do. I ask you now to reaffirm as yours the faith of the Church. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suf- fered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe in one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Will you each, by God’s grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life’s end? I will with God’s help. God our creator, Rock of our salvation, has given us new birth by water and the Spirit, and forgiven our sins through Jesus Christ our Lord. May God keep us faithful to our calling now and for ever. Amen.

Over the years the Parish has benefitted from the generosity of Parish- ioners, not only when they have been active members of the Parish, but also at the time of their death. Parishioners are invited to remember the Parish in their wills by making a bequest as a thank offering to God and to ensure that generations to come will enjoy worship and fellowship in well maintained buildings.

Those wishing to make a bequest are invited to do so using these or a similar form of words: "I bequeath the sum of $...... to the Rector and Wardens of the Anglican Parish of St Paul, Burwood, to be used at their absolute discretion for the charitable purposes of the Parish."

The Comment was made at our recent AGM that if each person coming to St. Paul's were to give the extra cost of a couple of coffees on top of their regular giving we could double the giving at St. Paul's overnight. It's that easy. Why not give it a go? You get less caffeine and the Parish bene- fits too.

Furthermore, if everyone gave electronically it would mean that the Par- ish would further benefit by receiving giving each week from every per- son rather than only receiving giving when each person can physically put their financial gift into the collection bag. Were ging him along gloomy passage ways until the entrance of the dungeons was reached, where with oaths and cursings and his boot the jailer sent him staggering along the roughly cobbled street.

His mind still befuddled, he managed a few metres before sinking down on a low stone wall, his mind aware that only minutes since he had been under sentence of crucifixion, and yet now, miraculously ,he was free! About to go on his way, a sudden commotion behind him caused him to think his release was a mistake and he was being pursued. Crouching behind the wall he saw it was indeed a detachment of soldiers, escorting two men carrying crosses…his companions Rueben and Obed being tak- en to be crucified, the crucifixion that he had somehow escaped. Moved by some lingering sense of loyalty to his mates, he followed the little pro- cession at a distance. From a side alley another detachment of soldiers joined the group, escorting a third man staggering too under a heavy cross. Even at the distance he was, he dimly recalled seeing this third man some place, but where was it? ... Yes, that was it! He once had been working at pick-pocketing a crowd gathered around a house where some men were breaking up the roof to lower their paralysed mate on his bed sheet down inside the house. That’s where he’d seen this man.... Curious, he’d watched as the man--some teacher or other it seemed-- spoke with undoubted authority words of comfort and healing to the paralysed man, his friends looking anxiously yet confidently down from the torn hole in the roof. The crowd’s response and the actions of the healer stirred something in his hardened heart which convinced him that the healer was a truly good man. Yet here he was now, a criminal carrying a cross. A sudden thought caught at his heart, crashing upon his consciousness al- most making him physically ill so powerful was the emotion it aroused! Carrying a cross! Suddenly, blindingly he realised that it was his cross this man was carrying! The jailer had told him the crowd wanted some other man crucified instead, so that he was not carrying that ghastly in- strument of torture! But why? Why? This man he simply knew was no criminal! …

Under the strangely darkening sky the small procession had arrived where the crucifixions would be held. Keeping a low profile he edged nearer. He watched Obed and Reuben vainly struggling and cursing as the soldiers drove the nails in with sickening hammer strokes… He watched their crosses being hoisted up into position. But the third man…he lay down with no-one forcing him, and as the soldiers carried out their dreadful task he was saying something-- Forgive them, they don’t know what they are doing! Then, the three crosses upright, he heard Obed’s wild shrieking against their punishment, and Reuben reprimanding Obed and asking forgiveness of the centre man and hearing the man say that Rueben would that day be with him in para- dise.

Wonderingly he looked up at the man whose face was streaked with blood from the thorny crown which had been pushed hard onto his head. The man, despite his horrendous wounds, looked down from the cross, meeting his gaze with a look of infinite pity and love Strange emotions flooded through him, and his heart's hard core of selfish and uncaring rebellion seemed to dissolve. His heart and mind in tumult, he realised that this innocent man was on the cross in his place, literally in his place, the place to which he, Barabbas, had been condemned. His heart and mind opened to a divine understanding coming not from himself, as revealing to him as to the Centurion, whose cry Truly this man is the son of God. echoed in his innermost soul, bringing peace.

And in the distant hill country, a father’s oft-repeated, desperate prayer was answered as his soul, too, was flooded with a healing calm…

 1. To allow the clergy and people to think that the clergy are "the ministers" and church members are the consumers of ministry.

EVERY MEMBER IS A MINISTER

2. To allow the people to think that they are volunteers.

WE HAVE COVENANTED WITH GOD TO MINISTER IN GOD'S WORLD WHEREVER WE MAY BE: WORKPLACE, FAMILY, CHURCH, COMMUNITY

3. To allow someone to think that "their" ministry is the most important.

THERE IS ONE MINISTRY - THE MINISTRY OF JESUS CHRIST. ALL OF OUR MINISTRIES ARE IN SERVICE TO JESUS' MINISTRY

4. To think that any individual can fill any position.

EACH PERSON IS ENDOWED WITH UNIQUE GIFTS. THE CHURCH COMMUNITY AND THE INDIVIDUAL TOGETHER MUST DISCERN WHAT THOSE GIFTS ARE

5. To ask a person with discerned gifts to enter a ministry without detailing the expectations, providing training or the resources needed to accomplish the ministry or to offer an opportunity to minister, to support and then not to carry it through.

6. To allow church members to think that "church activity" is the only arena of ministry or that it is more important than being Christ's representative wherever they are in the world.

ALL ARE CALLED TO MINISTRY WITHIN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH AND IN THE MIDST OF EVERYDAY LIFE

7. To allow ministries in the workplace, family, church and community to go unnoticed and unappreciated.

PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE IN YOUR CHURH COMMUNITY. TELL THEM THAT YOU PRAY FOR THEM AND THAT YOU ARE THANKFUL FOR THE MINISTRY THEY CARRY OUT AS REPRESENTATIVES OF JESUS. Recently I was asked to be Locum in an upper Hunter Valley Parish by the Bishop of Newcastle. This would have been for about 3 months. However because of commitment at the time I was needed to had to say “no”. One commitment was the possibility of a Locum at Holy Trinity Dulwich Hill for a period of 4-6 weeks. This I have accepted but there are going to be further talks about it.

Fr Dave Smith– the boxing priest – is the Rector and is going to have some leave. I have told him that I will not be going in the boxing ring during his absence!! An interesting connection with Fr Dave is that I knew his mother Joan very well before she died of cancer when Dave was in his early teens. In fact I was with Joan the day before she died in what was then known as the Masonic hospital Ashfield. I should be going to Dulwich Hill towards the end of April and throughout May.

I will miss you. Please keep in touch. Ring my home phone 9799 2169 or Mobile 0409 799 434.

Please pray for me.

Our Re- gional Bishop, Bishop Rob- ert Forsyth, will be joining us for both Services on that day.

At the 9.30 am Service, we already have several adult and adolescent candidates who will be Confirmed. Please pray for our candidates that God will: Increase in them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of discernment and inner strength, The spirit of knowledge and true godliness, And fill them with wonder and awe at your presence, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If you would like to be Confirmed or Received into the Anglican Communion then please speak with Fr. James, Rosemary, or Michael.

There will be an Anzac Centenary Choral Evensong at St James’s on Sunday, April 26th at 3 pm. The preacher will be Chaplain Katie Inches-Ogden, Command Chaplain to Forces Command.)

The Old St Thomas Chapel was the Parish Church of Narellan. It was sold in very poor condition to a delightful couple who from their own resources, without any outside help, restored it, bought back original pews and had other pews made in the same form, and who provide it for religious and civil ceremonies. For many years we have had Evensong there on Good Friday, no charge ever being made, a service organised because there was no afternoon services in the town on Good Friday, S.Peter’s Parish Church having replaced an afternoon service with a parish barbecue. (A new Anglican church was built elsewhere in Narellan.) The Narellan pioneer graveyard was also sold by the Diocese, I understand to a Canberra funeral director who subsequently sold it to Muslims. It is now used for Muslim burials although access is allowed to those who have family members or friends buried there. Such is life (and death and life).

With kind regards, John Bunyan

Thank you to everyone who has responded so generously to our plea for help.

Please continue to support the pantry by bringing in suitable foods, particularly com- plete meals and boxes of cereal.

Thank you!
