“The Royals of Sir Cedric” by Steve Treder of The Hardball Times December 21, 2004 At its inception, the most successful expansion franchise in pre-free agency baseball history didn’t impress many observers. The Kansas City Royals devoted most of their expansion draft picks to unproven young players, in distinct contrast to the approach taken by their companion A.L. expansion team, the Seattle Pilots. Take a look at the first ten choices of each club, noting each player’s age and major league experience as of the October 15, 1968 draft: Royals: Player Age ML Seasons ML Experience 1. LEGENDS IN THE MLB COMMUNITY 2018 A Office of the Commissioner MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ROBERT D. MANFRED, JR. Commissioner of Baseball Dear Friends and Colleagues: Baseball is fortunate to occupy a special place in our culture, which presents invaluable opportunities to all of us. Major League Baseball’s 2018 Community Affairs Report demonstrates the breadth of our game’s efforts to make a difference for our fans and communities. The 30 Major League Clubs work tirelessly to entertain and to build teams worthy of fan support. Yet their missions go much deeper. Each Club aims to be a model corporate citizen that gives back to its community. Additionally, Major League Baseball is honored to support the important work of core partners such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Jackie Robinson Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer. We are proud to use our platform to lift spirits, to create legacies and to show young people that the magic of our great game is not limited to the field of play. As you will see in the pages that follow, MLB and its Clubs will always strive to make the most of the exceptional moments that we collectively share. Sincerely, Robert D. Manfred, Jr. Commissioner 245 Park Avenue, 31st Floor, New York, NY 10167 (212) 931-7800 LEGENDS Jackie Robinson Day Major League Baseball commemorated the 70th anniversary of the legendary Hall of Famer breaking baseball’s color barrier in 1947 with all players and on-field personnel again wearing Number 42. All home Clubs hosted pregame ceremonies and all games featured Jackie Robinson Day jeweled bases and “70th anniversary of the lineup cards.

In July 2019, Major League Baseball publicly announced that the 2021 All-Star Game would be played in July 2021 at SunTrust Park (now named Truist Park), the home field of the Atlanta Braves in Cobb County, Georgia. The All-Star Game is a national attraction that generates extraordinary revenue for the host city. Businesses from mom-and-pop restaurants and bars to national hotel chains prepare years and months in advance for the event. Tables are reserved, hotel rooms are booked, events are planned, people are hired. Cobb County budgeted expenses of $2 million for improvements and municipal hiring to meet the expected influx of tourists and fans for the big event. Businesses in the Atlanta metro region stood to earn $100 million. Multiple municipalities were counting on millions more in tax revenues. 2. I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

MLB IN THE COMMUNITY 2017 Office of the Commissioner MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ROBERT D. MANFRED, JR. Commissioner of Baseball Dear Friends and Colleagues: Baseball’s ability to bring people together is one of the virtues that has long made it our National Pastime. The game affords all of us with countless opportunities to create memories for fans and to impact the causes that are important to them. For Major League Baseball and its 30 Clubs, this unique stature represents a true privilege — one that we honor. MLB’s 2017 Community Affairs Report highlights the many ways in which our game strives to be a sound corporate citizen. All of our Clubs are firmly committed to making a difference in their communities. Together, our Clubs and players shine a light on worthy causes, individuals and organizations throughout the season. Centrally, MLB has formed core partnerships with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Stand Up To Cancer and the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Imparting their values is vital to us. In our ongoing focus on youth baseball and softball participation, we consistently emphasize the need for young people to become constructive members of their communities. Baseball entertains and intrigues from Spring Training through the World Series. At its very best, our game also has the ability to inspire. Our Community Affairs Report exemplifies the spirit of service that links all of us throughout Major League Baseball. Sincerely, Robert D. Manfred, Jr. Commissioner of Baseball LEGENDS JACKIE ROBINSON DAY On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier by stepping onto Ebbets Field to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
