In July 2019, Major League Baseball publicly announced that the 2021 All-Star Game would be played in July 2021 at SunTrust Park (now named Truist Park), the home field of the Atlanta Braves in Cobb County, Georgia. The All-Star Game is a national attraction that generates extraordinary revenue for the host city. Businesses from mom-and-pop restaurants and bars to national hotel chains prepare years and months in advance for the event. Tables are reserved, hotel rooms are booked, events are planned, people are hired. Cobb County budgeted expenses of $2 million for improvements and municipal hiring to meet the expected influx of tourists and fans for the big event. Businesses in the Atlanta metro region stood to earn $100 million. Multiple municipalities were counting on millions more in tax revenues. 2. CASE STUDY The Case Study of the Ron Tonkin Field/ Hillsboro Hops Public-Private Partnership The Hillsboro City Council set out to expand the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex and bring professional baseball to town as a means of enhancing residents’ quality of life. In doing so, the Council had several goals, including: 1. To create a facility that could be used year-round for youth sports, adult sports, special and community events. 2. To continue to support fields for public use, particularly to support athletic programs of the Hillsboro School District, as well as regional and state university athletic programs. 3. To support local youth with the creation of new jobs. 4. To support economic development in Hillsboro and help local businesses by increasing tourism spending and related entertainment spending. 5. To build regional and national awareness of Hillsboro as a means of highlighting our exceptional community. After a significant investment of time to gather and evaluate all available information in order to reach the best informed decision, the Hillsboro City Council authorized a public-private partnership with Short Season, LLC, owners of the soon-to-be named Hillsboro Hops. The agreement called for Short Season, LLC to relocate the team from Yakima and begin play in Hillsboro in June 2013 at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. In the Hops’ first three years playing at Hillsboro Ballpark/Ron Tonkin Field (renamed in 2014), the team sold more than 430,000 tickets. In addition to hosting the only professional baseball team in the Portland metro area, Ron Tonkin Field continues to play host to high school football, soccer, baseball, and charity fundraising events. -

Taylor Cole 10/31/2018 JAMS 347: Principles of PR Final Project: Campaign Plan Situation Analysis Client Overview The Hillsboro Hops are a minor league baseball affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks provide players and coaches to the team, as well as a stadium for the baseball prospects to play their games. The team is considered a Short Season Single A baseball club that features predominately first year players (About the Hillsboro Hops, n.d.). The team was previously based in Yakima, Washington and just recently relocated to Hillsboro, Oregon in 2013. Upon moving to Hillsboro, the team acquired new ownership, new facilities and a new name. The previously named Yakima Bears became the Hillsboro Hops. Ron Tonkin Field, which has the ability to host 4,500 people at capacity, was built for the Hops and is used for youth soccer and lacrosse in the off-season (Gordon Faber Recreation Complex, n.d.). The Hops are a part of the Northwest Conference, in which it plays other short season teams in the Pacific Northwest. Although supported by the Diamondbacks, the Hops are a privately and locally owned business. Short Season LLC owns the Hillsboro Hops Professional Baseball team. There are 30 investors that are a part of the ownership group. President Mike McMurray and his wife, Vice President and CFO, Laura McMurray, live in Hillsboro. The McMurray’s are highly involved in the daily operations of the team (About the Hillsboro Hops, n.d.). The organization’s mission statement is “to provide a memorable first-class experience so that we can enrich the lives of our fans, staff, players and community” (About the Hillsboro Hops, n.d.). -

The highly talented Class of 2023 arrived here from 37 states and the territory of Puerto Rico, and from 18 countries. This edition of Southernnews highlights exciting changes that have been taking place at FSC, including the introduction of several high-profile academic programs, recently completed and ongoing construction projects, faculty promotions, student honors, and alumni profiles. The start of the fall semester saw the launch of our much-anticipated Doctor of Physical Therapy program in its distinctively designed new home, the Campisi Academic Center for Physical Therapy. This state-of-the-art facility eectively brings unique aspects of FSC’s renowned architectural heritage to Lakeland’s Dixieland Historic District on South Florida Avenue. As part of the program’s curriculum, students will be performing clinical rotations locally and around the country, and will join faculty members in providing pro bono services through outreach eorts to underserved populations in our community. In these pages, you’ll also find an update about plans for another architecturally significant structure that will accommodate a major expansion of our computer science program, the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Computer Sciences Center, beginning to take shape in a prime spot overlooking Lake Hollingsworth. 2019 MiLBTM COMMUNITY REPORT LETTER FROM PAT O’CONNER LETTER FROM PAT Dear Friends and Colleagues, Thank you for your efforts in making 2019 another successful philanthropic year for Minor League Baseball, our 160 teams and MiLB Charities. As we prepare for the 2020 season, we have many accomplishments from last season to celebrate. None of our efforts would be possible without the great work of our teams, continued dedication from staff at the national office and the support of our millions of fans nationwide. For a fifth straight year, all 160 clubs reported their charitable giving and contributions, allowing us to accurately assess our collective efforts. It gives me great pleasure to say that in 2019, MiLB Charities donated nearly $50 million in cash and gifts in kind from our teams, leagues and partners — once again setting a new record-high total. In addition, MiLB and its teams nearly doubled our volunteer efforts from 2018, giving more than 26,000 hours in service of our communities. This report highlights MiLB Charities’ many programs and initiatives, including the MiLB CommUNITY Initiative presented by Allegiant Air, the Stars & Stripes Caps Program with New Era Cap Company, the Derrick Hall Pro-State Foundation Father’s Day Initiative, Ed Randall’s Fans For the Cure, the Joe Torre Safe At Home Domestic Violence Awareness Initiative, and the “Cover Your Bases” Sun Safety Initiative with the American Cancer Society. These are just a few of the ways our teams and partners are working together to make positive and lasting impacts in our MiLB communities. -
