Dear Michael Oak Community I started my journey at Michael Oak in 1986. Indeed,, even the primary school block had not yet been built. I was serving on the various Trustee Boards and College of Teachers that initiated the building of the Primary School block, the decision to go into the high school, that initiated the building of the hall, and that made the decision to extend our school to the matric level. All together I accompanied six classes in the Primary school, which included two full cycles, and taking on the classes at various levels. At the beginning of my journey, I was the young one on the block, and am so aware of this now that we have a number of new teachers on the block in the Primary School faculty. I feel so honoured and reassured when I see my young colleagues with their respective classes who are on the task of teaching and taking Michael Oak into the future.Working with the students from The Centre of Creative Education has been my annual highlight, and have always felt that we are so privileged in the Primary School to have new teachers joining us Star Tree Festival who have had this Waldorf training. Thursday 6th December However, my greatest love has been teaching and accompanying children in their second stage of unfolding. Over the years the children have brought new gifts and challenges, and it has always been my greatest 6.45pm for 7.00pm striving to meet the children in the most relevant manner. These challenges have meant that I have remained As a community we will gather a researcher and my learning has always been central to my teaching. Even though class teaching has always together to celebrate the Star been my passion, for many years the Class 5,6,7 choir was my highlight of the week. Music has always been Tree Festival in a mood of such a central feature in the primary school, and it brings me so much pleasure to see how this has reverent stillness - with song, developed and become so integrated in the school life of all our children with Mrs Goodall. Class camps have story and a ceremonial lighting been another highlight for me, and compared to those early camps where we really 'roughed' it, the more of the Tree. recent ones have been quite 'tame'. Both have their positive sides. In consciously lighting the tree Apart from the classroom, I have always striven to contribute to the greater Waldorf Movement, both within we will be reminding ourselves the school as well as in the broader structures of the South African Federation for Waldorf Schools and the of our journey as human beings Regional Waldorf School meetings. to unite with our Higher Selves- I now feel that the time has come for me to take some time out to gather my thoughts, to stop for a moment our Divine Nature. to gather my learning, energy and resources before embarking on the next step of my journey. We celebrate in this lighting - Where to from here? As Tolkien's Bilbo said: notwithstanding the confusion, “The Road goes ever on and on chaos and trouble that can beset our lives- that, as we reach Down from the door where it began. toward our highest ideals, the Now far ahead the Road has gone, light will prevail over the dark. And I must follow, if I can, Harmony will be restored and Pursuing it with eager feet, peace fill our lives. Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet. Each year at this time, we celebrate this journey toward And whither then? I cannot say” becoming truly Human. In lighting the candles we are reminded of what is of eternal value in our lives and in a spirit of quiet reverence we will celebrate this together.

Children are to be in their classrooms by 6.45pm and parents seated in the hall by 6.55pm NB No “littlies” please. Cellphones to be switched off throughout the festival.

EARLY CLOSING On Thursday 6 December, the Primary school will close at 12.30 pm Anette Bestwick (seated third from left) seen here with her 2018 Class 7s, and upper primary assistant Tiffany Courtriers (standing, top left). 2 “Thank You, Anette!”

Michael Oak kindergarten parent Peta Brom needs help collecting beetles ...

UCT PhD Student conducts study on beetles

Friends of the Common assisted PhD (UCT) student Peta Brom to collect monkey beetles from 10 different flowers in the Rondebosch Common on November 3. The group met at the section of the common that has an abundance of flowers currently in bloom and which is located just across from the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Ms Brom assigned different flowers to the 20 volunteers who came to help establish which flowers attracted which beetles. After the three teams collected beetles in jars they returned to the table where Ms Brom and the volunteers were able to look at all the beetle samples. “Almost half the world’s species of monkey beetles are found in Southern Africa with the highest concentration in the winter rainfall region. Monkey beetles are important pollinators in the region and have driven the evolution of many of our indigenous flowers, most notably in the iridaceae family, where some species can only form seeds if they are visited by the particular beetle that has co-evolved with them,” said Ms Brom. She would like to continue her research on monkey beetles next year in , the Jack Muller park in Tygerburg, Tokai Plantation, Common and Kenilworth racecourse conservation area. If any members of the public are interested in taking part in her project they can email her at [email protected]

The Annual Handball Tournament was played this morning. Well played Class 7, 8, 9 and 10... (and a few “oldies” who turned up for the fun match). Class 7 had us guessing for a while - they looked as if they would be in the final! In the end Class 9 placed first and Class 8 were second. Class 7 would have been awarded the Spirit Trophy if we had one and Class 10 would have won the Most-Beautiful-and-Sweet- Natured Cup if there had been one!
